2020 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

The idea that a junior in HS who verballed to a program being led by an historic coach isn't going to look around when said coach retires is silly. It is the smart thing to do, frankly. They went from knowing what they were getting into to not knowing as much. That's not to say that they won't be swayed back into the fray, but to look at their options? Of course they would. As they should.

As the current recruiting cycle kids get closer to my son's HS class, the more ridiculous adults judging the behavior of kids that age is to me.

I agree with most here that 2019 truly could be a program defining year for OSU/Day. Typically the results of a season are felt two years down the line, but there will absolutely be a direct impact on 2020 IMO. If OSU goes 12-1 and off to the playoff, I think the 2020 class will be loaded and maybe just a notch below what it would have been under Urban. But if OSU goes 9-3 and finishes third in the East...I could see recruits second guessing if Day is the dude or not.

The challenge for Day is that he isn't expected to meet the standard of OSU.

He will be judged on the standard set by Urban Meyer.

I’m unexplainably confident in Day’s abilities. There was a time that UFM (standing for Urban F%#!@$ Meyer) was just Urban Meyer, coach of Bowling Green. I think Day will make a decent name for himself when all is said and done.

I think he will be compared to Urban and the new standard he's set, but at the same time not be crushed as long as he approaches it without actually reaching it. Urban won 90% of his games while at OSU, which is absurd. If Day, over 5 years for example, wins 80% of his games and let's say 1/2 B1G championships and 1 playoff, that'd be a huge success.

What I was saying is that his ability to do what I said above will largely be based on his ability to recruit at least 90% as well as Urban. And the 2020 class will be huge for that, hence 2019 being a major year for him. That's a long winded way of saying if he goes 11-1 and 9-3 in his first two years, he better hope that's the order it goes. 9-3 in 2019 could overly affect the 2020 class.

Ohio State recruits itself but one thing is for sure, as long as Ryan Day is here, we will attract elite QB'S like Fields, Baldwin and Miller. Same with receivers. Also, elite players attract other elite players. It's all good!!
Day is definitely an offensive mind, he will attract a great amount of QB and skill position players, and that's where Urban excelled early on in his career as well, but once he got a solid staff at UF, he was able to also do the same on the defensive side, and also along the OL. Who Day hires and retains will be very big going into the off season, that will set the ground work for OSU being able to continue the success from the Meyer era.

That's all it is... get a defensive staff that can recruit and coach sound fundamentals at all cost.

We will always have playmakers on Offense wanting to play in this system

History DOES repeat itself. Woody, always had superior offensive teams. He'd hire a DC and say 'stop 'em, we'll get the points to win'. UFM was the same offensive mind, even though he was a DB, and Day could have a better (more modern?), approach to offensive than even UFM. Given those assertions, Day will have to find the DC he can find to recruit the bejabbers out, develop the talent, put 'em in the league, and 'stop 'em'. Downside is that he doesn't have UFM's rep to get it done (at least yet). There's enough left in tOSU pipeline (players), that he's got the firepower to start his reputation. Going 13-1 next year is imperative, and filling out the 2020 class (still UFM's so far), with more talented players will go far. My question is, who's the DC he needs. He's got the 'old bull' (Schiano), and the 'young bull' (Grinch), that may be a bit at odds with each other on what to do. Who will Day trust with his budding career to 'hold'em'? Anyway and always, Go Bucks!

It's going to be interesting, and hopefully fun, to watch Day round out his staff and assemble this '20 recruiting class.

OL and DB are beyond critical. It's do or die.
Luckily we have the #1 OT and #1 OG already in the fold. We literally need 2-3 more OL though.

DB recruiting in 2019 was a complete joke and I think we snag the best. If we land Corey then I think Ricks comes here too and we probably gey lejend back in the fold too.

Yep I agree.

Currently deep and set at WR, RB, DL, DE and Safety. Confident in our 19 depth as well as the position coaches to continue to develop these position groups.

Crazy good talent and youth but need development at LB, OC and QB (assuming Haskins gone). I’m confident in QB development but Day needs to manage the QB battle (no small feat). Pending coaching changes we could see a big step forward in both LB production (the raw talent is there).

Solid returning youth but scary thin at CB and OT. Assuming no major injuries or defections we should be solid in 19 in these position groups but 2020 is very much exposed to early entries cutting down to bone. Obvious area we need to focus on for both recruiting and coaching personnel.

Hoping we can fill a few spots at both CB and OT in the final 2019 signing period that are more than just projects.

New Rivals 250 for the 2020 class with some of my brief comments in parentheses:

4. 5* CB Elias Ricks (up 2 spots...listing him because I don't think the LSU commit sticks, need to pursue hard here)
5. 5* DE Bryan Bresee (down 1 spot...have slipped some with the UFM retirement, but very much in the game)
6. 5* DE Sae'Vell Smalls (down 1 spot...interested to see if the Scott commit helps here, would be a huge addition to this class)
7. 5* OT Paris Johnson (up 11 spots, nice bump...I see him sticking unless the new OL coach doesn't vibe with him)
8. 5* DB Kelee Ringo (up 5 spots...tons of teams involved and we are currently have some ground to cover...Jack Miller could help here...I expect us to pursue hard regardless)
12. 5* RB Kendall Milton (up 7 spots...I think we are more in the mix here than most think, but still somewhat of a long shot imo)
13. 5* WR Rakim Jarrett (meteoric rise up 49 spots and earns the 5th star...we have a BIG lead here and I expect Jarrett to be a Buckeye sooner rather than later...get ready for a monster WR class in 2020)
14. 5* OL Justin Rodgers (have faded hard here unfortunately but hopefully we can get back in the mix, would be a big pickup...need to make a big time OL hire and get back in fast)
15. 5* WR Julian Fleming (up 10 spots...the Fields transfer is going to help here quite a bit imo and I think that alone catapults us up right near the top...another big year for our offense and some recruiting from Fields, and I think we could honestly pull this off)
18. 5* LB Mekhail Sherman (down 8 spots...still think we are comfortably in the lead and a commit from Jarrett could help seal it)
21. 5* DB Fred Davis (down 4 spots...we are definitely trending here, but we'll have to fight off some serious competition down south to land him...hoping Tyreke Johnson is in his ear and gets some good PT this year to help out)
23. 4* OL Kevin Pyne (down 2 spots...extreme longshot, likely all ND)
43. 4* DE Darrion Henry (down 6 spots...big OSU lean and should be a Buckeye)
46. 4* OL Turner Corcoran (up 41 spots...think we are out front but the new staff relationships will be key, because the plain state schools will be coming hard)
55. 4* QB Jack Miller (down 7 spots...no idea how he didn't get a little bump up in his ratings...in any event, he's all Buckeye unless the Fields commit changes things, which I doubt it does)
70. 4* DB Dwight McGlothern (down 1 spot...hopefully we really get in the mix here with the staff changes, would love to nab him)
81. 4* WR Gee Scott (down 18 spots for some reason...nice pickup here)
85. 4* WR AJ Henning (down 16 spots...heavy ND lean, need to make up some ground here, but may not pursue that hard based on Fleming and Jarrett)
88. 4* OL Luke Wypler (up 2 spots...all has been quiet lately, hoping he is solid...really need him in this class)
120. 4* DE Jacolbe Cowan (up 5 spots...a long shot now, likely stays south)
149. 4* ATH Michael Drennen (down 2 spots...I still see him landing in Columbus, important player to lock down early...our next Samuel/Campbell pivot player)
162. 4* DT Tre Williams (up 60 spots, huge jump...heavy Ohio State lean and a big piece of the defensive side of the class...might be the only pure DT we take in the 2020 class)
218. 4* OL Geirean Hatchett (no change...I think we are seriously in the mix here, but have some work to do to beat out the western teams)
226. 4* WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba (down 31 spots...seems solid and I love his game)
231. 4* DB Lejond Cavazos (down 101 spots...think we still lead here and I like our chances to get him back in the class)
