2020 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

We have got to get back to top 10-20 defense that we are known for.
Kids don't care about team defensive rankings. They care about being drafted into the NFL.

Here's my worry.. that we have the reputation that we are an offensive school like OU that plays no defense.
We have the reputation of producing high draft picks on the defensive side of the ball. And the 2019 NFL Draft will be no different:

DE Joey Bosa: consensus #1 overall
DT Dre'mont Jones: 1st-2nd round
CB Kendall Sheffield: 2nd-3rd round

And then in the 2020 draft, Chase Young, Jeffrey Okudah, Shaun Wade, Jordan Fuller, Malik Harrison, Jonathan Cooper, Robert Landers....

I think football schemes are like pendulums too, they swing from offense to defense and back etc as each figure out how to stop or beat the other. Right now we are obviously watching an offensive swing. Just like you see defenses evolve from 4-3 to now most are running 3-4's, except we have been a 4-3 team at OSU. The rules seem to favor the offense. However I would argue that PI is now giving the defender so much more than they used to get away with. Just like Olinemen are now allowed to hold much more than decades past. Dlinemen were just destroying Olinmen at one time when they couldn't hold at all, now as long as they keep their hands inside they can grab what ever they get their hands on. DBs seem to be able to bludgeon hack and assault on a regular basis now. IE the Rams lol.
Here's where I disagree. DB's are getting more PI calls then ever before. The Rams call was just a bad call, plain and simple.
Defenses are more at a disadvantage now(especially in the NFL) as leagues are trying to protect QBs who are the money makers. To combat the spread offenses, lighter more athletic LBs are needed, and that's what Clemson employs and OSU does not. A Borland or Werner probably wouldn't work at a Clemson, but Jones and the athleticism of Booker would, Schiano never got that.

OSU is in on 6 of the top 10 from OH alone with Henry and Thomas being elite defensive players (https://247sports.com/Season/2020-F...ankings/?InstitutionGroup=HighSchool&State=OH), we will have the talent. OSU is in on countless other kids in the 2020 class on defense(Ringo, Sherman, Gray, Breese, etc). And that's not counting a kid who comes out of the blue and gets an OSU offer and plays above his ranking and earns his way into the NFL(Darron Lee, Malik Hooker). We haven't even played the 2019 season and people are complaining about the NFL draft that is 4 and 5yrs away, WTF

I think DBs are getting more PIs because they are allowed to grab hold pull bite and use a knife now compared to what they were allowed to do ten years ago. Years ago a DB literally couldn't touch a WR and it was interference. Now, they "hand fight" all the way down the route, grab and pull jerseys to the point they rip them off the shoulder pad at times with no call, and mug he WR half the time. The DBs get away with so much more now that it has made Refs become incredibly inconsistent. The PIs against White in the Rose Bowl were perfect examples. He barely grabs the guy twice and is flagged yet other plays DBs were getting away with tackling the WR before the ball gets there. It is frustrating to watch anymore because one play a DB will not get flagged for an obvious pull of the jersey and the next a guy gets a flag for almost nothing.

Nick Bosa, but all the same truth.

yeah, but just to play devil's advocate here, we were in on a ton of '19 guys early too that we thought we would land and very few of them came to fruition.

If they produce on the field in '19 then the train keeps rollin' with Day. If they some how take a step back, and lose 3-4 games, the doubters will creep in and I think it will take a toll on what could have been an amazing '20 class if Urban were still running the show, regardless of their '19 record.

True, but that was before the Zach Smith saga which hit national news coverage like hurricane. I'm sure we would have a number of kids without that Smith cloud tainting the program and Urban. Not to mention, Urban retiring as well also caused some kids to look elsewhere. Those 2 story lines derailed this class to a point. That HAS to be taken into consideration, the 2019 cycle wasn't a normal one by any stretch

very true. But Urban isn't walking through the door so that problem doesn't go away. The Zach S. stuff will over time.

That's why I also pointed out the product on the field in '19 without Urban will do a lot to silence the critics and doubters. Just sayin', with some of the depth issues at OL, still waiting on this batch of LB's to step up, awaiting to see who the next crop of DB's after the guys we'll lose next year r going to be. Let's see if the elite level of recruiting can be maintained without those distractions and negativity surrounding the program.

bukipower would find something to bitch about if Ohio State was on a 59 game winning streak and had picks 1-5 in the NFL draft every year. He’s Mr. Glass Half Empty.
Thank you for the nice words... kind soul.

I wouldn't say I'm glass half empty. Just worry way more than I should about things I absolutely have no control over. Besides this is a message board and its the off season so may as well drum up something to chat about.

The narrative of "we are amazing" can get old if thats all we talk about. You have to give me credit I did much better this year though.

Everyone lost their stuff after Purdue so that doesn't count.

I really think we are going to start seeing some of those All Time Ohio greats type of recruits start inflooding the Buckeye roster again. Oline, Dline, LB and All Purpose players are one's we have feasted on in the past and I have a feeling it'll start finding it's way back in the cycle. I'm all for that and cherry pick those fantastic 5 stars from around the country in some of the pipelines we've built up over the past 8-10 years. I think we're going to be just fine.
