tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Hear ya loud and clear pnuts......check my first three words. Wood's philosophy is to recruit OTs, and if they didn't show out on the footwork skills, etc. turn them into guards. I do agree with you, gotta have multiples at each position, because as always, some of them don't pan out at tOSU level. And yeah, we're in trouble after Paris and Dawand graduate/leave, with no elite OT prospects available. Maybe tOSU will get some elite guys with a new OL coach? Go Bucks

I don't follow recruiting much. I'm more of a "let me know when they sign the LOI" guy, so I don't know if we're anticipating any possible declarations in the AA Bowl today.

Anyone in particular to watch?

Good call!

Who among the guys currently on the roster are the 2 favorites to start at tackle in 2023? I don't even really know who is going to be a guard and who is going to be a tackle.

Dewand Jones and Paris Johson Jr are projected '22 starters. PJ could, theoretically, come back for '23 if he wanted to.

Behind them you have these guys listed as OT's coming out of HS (national rank):
'20
Grant Toutant #463
Trey Leroux #NA

'21
Zen Michalski #314

'22
George Fitzpatrick #329
Avery Henry #NA

I don't recall hearing anything about any of these guys flashing in practices or seeing the field yet. I just read that Fitzpatrick didn't look good at the All American game so, it would appear that, we have essentially zero depth at tackle in '22 and no obvious OSU level starters in the pipeline for '23.

Not sure if any of the guys listed as IOL could play tackle but I think we are about to find out. I think it's transfer portal or bust though.

Tegra is a tackle (who could play guard) and had a great week, with chatter that he has the talent to bump to a fifth star.

Depth is still certainly an issue.

It's going to be interesting to see if scouts will draft Paris top 15 after one year. He also is graduating now, and didn't play OT in 2021 because of OSU having too many OTs. So ok not having 1 year at OT when draft eligible is not his fault.

I think they need one guy. And they don't need Taylor decker or Mike Adams. They need a Darryl Baldwin.

If they can get a year or two out of a third guy besides tegra/Paris, and can step up their recruiting for the 2024-after teams, they'll be good. If Tegra or Jackson can't fill that void, then there is trouble.

I believe people like Birm have always speculated that Donovan Jackson has the athleticism to play RT if needed.

Josh Fryar was neck and neck with Dawand for the RT job this year. I’ve also read that Vimahi looked really good at Tackle in Fall camp and even though he is 6’4 he has very long arms.

I’ve said for a year now that I think Donovan Jackson “COULD” play Tackle. Here’s a reason why I think he could. This is a picture of Georgia’s 6’3 340 lb Left Tackle.

Has the requisite arm length as well.

Just came in to say that, a lot of scouts liked Jackson at tackle for that reason (and the athleticism). But at least one of Jackson, Vimahi and/or Fryar will need to step up and play well (not simply fill in like we did under JT when guards played tackle out of necessity). Even then, we still may very well have issues the next year unless we hit big in the transfer portal or perhaps a JUCO like the guy we got out of NY (blanking on his name, Partridge or something like that). With all the skilled position weapons we have, would be a shame to see them diminished by bad OL play.
