tOSU Recruiting Discussion

You have a great point 86. I like to see who's going to be a star as well. However, I like to see them earn it instead of walk into it. Enjoyed seeing Haskins earn his way on the field. Fields on the other hand, will pretty much walk into it from the git-go. Same as Joe Burrows, except he's a Buckeye. Go Bucks.
Field is going to be the starter because he's the best player. He's not going to have anything just given to him in my opinion.

Free agency killed my interest in professional football, baseball, and basketball. Hope the 'transfer portal' aka 'free agency' at college level, doesn't kill my interest in college football as well. Guess it's good that there's only a one or two year window for most college players, given their finite shelf life.
So you essentially enjoy players having no power and staying put on one team for their careers, while coaches can come and go as they please? I personally love the aspect of free agency(and love professional sports over college, better talent), but to each his own.

And not sure how Fields is being handed anything. I guess guys like Clarett, Zeke, Braxton, Beanie(I can go on) were handed their spots too. Or were they just more talented than their peers early on in off season and quelled the competition early? I'd say all earned their PT, like Fields will

The portal thread is probably a better place to debate the impact of transfers.

The most highly ranked QB in the history this program just became eligible. Seems like that ought to warrants our attention.

I thought the clearance would come early - but I didn't think this early. Great for the program in every way. And I hope Baldwin pushes him every inch of the way and shines in a backup role in a way we have not seen in quite some time.

Kids have always been allowed to transfer and they should always be. But I like the fact that that doing so means you have to sit out a year before you can play at the new school. That rule makes kids second guess whether they are really making the best decision for the right reasons. This whole free agent concept of transferring and playing right away with the waiver is what I think sucks. It just makes it too easy of an impulse decision. Just my opinion... but I was once a Division I athlete and contemplated transferring and to me, it was way harder than the original recruiting choice. In the end, I decided to stay put because I had way too much invested in my education, friendships, etc where I already was.

Why can't players have the same level playing field as the coaches? Their already not being paid, it sucks a coach can leave with no repercussions, he can leave a school in sanctions and get a new job, while the kids suffer. The playing field should be level, it should be a free agent market, and the players who do the playing should get more power. I've never seen anyone wear an Urban Meyer or Dabo Sweeney jersey

Just read that Nick Starkel is transferring from A&M as a grad transfer and is considering Ohio State. Had a relationship with Yurcich during recruiting...

https://www.elevenwarriors.com/ohio...considering-transfer-to-ohio-state-per-report

NICK STARKEL VISITING OTHER SCHOOLS. I don't think my pipe dream of Nick Starkel replacing Tate Martell at Ohio State is going to come to fruition.

It looks like Starkel has a list of schools he wants to visit, and Ohio State ain't on it.

From Josh Newberg of HawgSports.com:

Texas A&M quarterback transfer Nick Starkel has informed Noles247 that he has set an official visit to Florida State and Arkansas. After not signing a quarterback in back-to-back recruiting classes, FSU is looking to the transfer portal to fill their needs at quarterback.

"I scheduled a official to FSU for March 29th weekend," Starkel told Noles247. "I'm going to Arkansas on March 1st. I have spring break in between those two and FSU has spring break, which is the only reason they're so far apart."

This all makes sense, especially after watching the video that I put in this week's fake Saturday Skull Session.

Here it is for those of you who missed it:

If you skip to 19:22, Starkel heavily implies that he would be a Buckeye, and likely be Ohio State's starting quarterback if Justin Fields were not granted immediate eligibility. But obviously, he was. The same day that video was published, in fact.

And at 26:55, he talks about the Tate Martell "ass my dude" story.

SKULL SESSION: TRANSFER WAIVERS COULD GET STRICTER, ESPN'S FPI SNUBS OHIO STATE AND HIGH SCHOOLERS CATFISH RECRUITING SERVICES

#TEENS CATFISH RIVALS.
For any of you conspiracy theorists who believe recruiting rankings are often very arbitrary and extremely loosely based in actual analysis, you might not be too far off, especially if you're a Rivals.com loyalist.

See, Rivals gave a three-star rating to a prospect that doesn't exist simply because some high schoolers created a fake Twitter account for the fake prospect and and claimed he had offers from Alabama and Georgia.

247 Sports shares the black stain at least a bit, mostly for trusting Rivals enough to automagically import their data into their composite rankings, and they addressed it quickly (while also indirectly vowing to confirm players exist before giving them a composite ranking).

The most hilarious part about this is the radio silence from Rivals, who seem to just be turtling up and hoping this all goes away, which is absolutely the best way to handle situations like this, I've heard.
