tOSU Recruiting Discussion

I don't want to speak for buklpower, but I don't think that's what he's saying, Jax.

I think he's saying Day will be more open to giving serious consideration to an Ohio kid outside the top 10 in the state to re-establish Ohio, where it seemed like Urban would only offer mostly the top 10 players in Ohio with an occasional offer in a position of need outside the top 10.

He said 20. He wasn't trying to say a different number, he said 20.

Bringing up the contrast between Tressel and urban in recruiting is a good point but I think comparing their on field results is necessary to remember before people talk themselves into wanting to go backwards.

All things being equal take the Ohio kid but get the best players. If that's less than 5 kids from Ohio in a particular year then so be it.

I totally agree if there are only 5 OSU offer-worthy kids then u offer those 5. But we've seen plenty of talented Ohio kids go elsewhere that OSU has not even offered in recent years.

paraphrasing: He said Day would be more apt to take A top 20 kid from Ohio, not 20 Ohio kids......meaning he is looking outside just the top 5-10 in-state prospects. That's how I understood it.

Buklpower loves himself some Ohio special powers but I don't think anyone expects to have the class made up of 85-90% Ohio kids.

Look at what kind of player you are talking about once you get past the top 5-10 in state kids on any given year.

20 kids or #18 is the same kind of foolishness.

Keeping the 19th best Ohio kid from going to MSU isn't winning. You only have 85 total. you take 1 from Ohio that's 1 you can't take nationally. That is what zero sum meant.

He said "not really" when I mentioned it which means he somehow must think that Day gets to take more than 85.

Anyway. I'm done with it.

The idiocy level on this board is at an all time high and I'm debating if it's worth enduring for the good posters or if it's finally time to call it a day.

When all is said and done, if we have 25 available schollies for a class, get the best 25 players from wherever, period. If we don't sign a single kid from Ohio, then so be it. Same as if by some magic the top 25 kids in the class for that year all happen to be from Ohio, sign 'em all. I'm pretty darn sure than no one gave a crap that Dwayne Haskins or Nick Bosa aren't from Ohio.

Jax, you are not even trying to understand what Buklpower and I are trying to say. I don't think it is idiotic.

We aren't saying load up half the class with 3*'s from Ohio. But there is plenty of talent 11-20 in Ohio to not offer a few of them, and let talented guys walk, @ OL especially, when we r so down on numbers. Coaches don't pay attention to rankings like we do as fans. They bring in good football players at positions of need.

You do realize that Potter and Jacoby are both outside of the Ohio top 10 in this year's class (14th and 19th, according to Rivals rankings)? Are they not OSU caliber, offer-worthy players?

Jestin Jacobs is a perfect example. 4* OLB, ranked #11 in the state. Ohio State got in on him too late and he stuck with Iowa. U offer him 1-2 months earlier and he's a Buckeye right now. We'll be wishing that kid was a Buckeye 2 yrs down the road.

I think Day's happy spot needs to be in the middle. Re-establish the border, dip into southwest Ohio, continue to recruit national, but let it be known that the cream of the crop in Ohio are going to get serious consideration to become Buckeyes and they aren't just going to get plucked away by the B1G and UK each yr without a fight.

I am with you 100%. We need to put some focus on getting stronger in Ohio and frankly, Day is not going to having the national recruiting clout that Urban did (or at least at first)...that aspect of UFM was unprecedented. That being said, we have had enough success and name recognition lately (particularly with all the draft picks) that there is no doubt we can continue to get top prospects nationally. I think logically it makes sense to land somewhere in the middle of UFM and Tressel's recruiting styles.

Glad someone thinks I'm not crazy. At least at 1st, Day needs to establish himself as a national recruiter by building some momemtum and mix in some in-state talent. Worst thing he can do is miss on all the big fish and have a recruiting class of entirely 3* reaches.

I think Jax is still in denial that we just lost one of the best recruiters of all-time, thinks 5*'s grow on trees, and they're just going to flock to OSU in groves without Meyer.
