2018 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

This is only a story because OSU flat out dropped a supreme talent and the timing coincided with an NCAA violation. That's a juicy story and I am not sure I trust the Lantern's familiarity with recruiting news (not that it was scarce on Micah).

This does not secure clicks:

"Actually, Micah had a ton of red flags, and despite really liking OSU, they never were all on him. Things were shaky before the visit and they moved on after the visit. Him calling out the coaching staff was a more significant straw that broke the camel's back (but again, it wasn't really working out before that). So this really isn't news, because his recruitment was mostly dead before the visit and would've been fully dead without this gameday moment."

As for Herbie, I'm pretty sure the violation exists as soon as he gets into proximity of Kirk. So could he have shushed him away? I guess but technically by that point it's already illegal. "Bumping into" celebrity alumni is illegal, but schools arrange it all of the time. I'm guessing this was a little different since he was in a limited access area of Gameday.

I'm not giving you that break. It's not as though Herbstreit cruised Lane Avenue looking for recruits to taint with a violation. The reports indicate Terwilliger took the recruit to GameDay. Why is that Herbstreit's fault?

I totally agree that on some level the Game Day people should be well aware of this potential. Have you seen these sets? They are well separated from the crowd. There were multiple people involved that one would have to get past before they got to Frosty or Eddie, right? Come on, it’s not exactly like you can just walk on the set and get direct access to them. That said, those people who let him pass knew EXACTLY who he was. There is ZERO CHANCE that a ‘pedestrian’ gets on set. Right? Sure, I’d love a selfie with Eddie... not happing on or near the Game Day set.

T-Willy (or whoever that is) has a responsibility to know where they should / should not be. And the Game Day crew should have prevented it well before he got to Frosty and Eddie. Given the frequency by which Game Day is in places where this is a potential occurrence, I can’t believe this isn’t discussed with the security / crews.

Anyone here who knows me understands that I am _not_ a fan of Frosty... but This ain’t on him.

I frankly lean in the direction of the kid being told that it was not kosher and doing it anyway. Recall, one of the off field knocks here is personal judgment.

I still think Herbie should get hit with a show cause and be off the air for 5 years

So glad that Urban is bringing in the kind of guys he WANTS to coach. That matters more than anything for his long term success. In the end, I want a Hall of Fame coach here with a long tenure winning 85-90% of his games much more than any single player in any recruiting class.
Urban has changed since Florida .,he would risk the chance of a 2am phone call then now he wants to eliminate or lower that risk. It’s those 2 am calls that ruin your health not a loss to Iowa every so often.

I think its a combination. And he's said as much. He took the losses MUCH harder than his wins. He didn't even come close to enjoying his NCs at UF as much as the one at tOSU. And his family seems much happier now. And to all the fellow married guys, happy wife= happy life

Herbie even said in his defense tweet that they come in contact with recruits on the Game Day set every weekend. This is happening across the country each weekend at high profile Universities and nothing has been mentioned before. It is only news bc it happened at tOSU, IMHO.

The only difference may be the fact that it was "organized/allowed" to happen by OSU staff. Again, I am sure it is happening everywhere else too.

I guess that's my point--there is a world of difference between innocently bumping into a recruit and doing this with a person who Herbie assumed was a recruit:

There's not. There are surely scores of photos taken with said celebrities. I stood next to Charles Woodson during The Game in the second quarter this year. Among "working media" and sideline workers, he never went more than 2 minutes without having to stop for photos (often during the play). He was down in the area where their recruits congregate before the game. Same with Denard Robinson and Aaron Judge. I don't know what they allow to happen photo wise but they surely met a lot of kids.

I have to think one of the main distinctions here is that it's in a limited access area, whereas the usual location is on the sidelines where they "accidentally" run into each other.

And again I reiterate that this is an incredibly late story. His recruitment was dead for reasons not related to this, but that wouldn't make for many clicks.

because it's a superstar talent at a huge position of need that was unceremoniously dropped.

Why he was dropped is being compartmentalized if it's even known by the writer.
