2018 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Didn't an OL or TE named Gardner (2013 class I think) also earn a scholarship by fulfilling the requirements? He didn't have a brother who was an all american on the team though. But temper your expectations. I am happy Hooker got a schollie though.

My expectations have been tempered, it's not like I said he's the next coming of Mike Doss. But praise is deserved for going to camp and earning an offer from the school that you really want to attend. He could have very easily committed to a number of schools that had already offered him, and not to the school that his brother has put a stamp on. I don't for a second think that Urban would offer Marcus based on his brother, our scholarship numbers are too tight and he's not that type of coach, though I believe Tressel would've offered him because of Malik.

That OL Tim Gardner was evaluated and fought for by Ed Warinner. No disrespect to a fine coach, but as we've seen, he's not the best evaluator of talent. Coombs & Schiano evaluated this one.

Interesting that the writers thought is that were now out of the running for Campbell, Silver(I figured we were hardly in it) and Surtain Jr.(we were never really in this fight) with the decommitment of Chatfield

I think Campbell is more of a wildcard but I do think that while Chatfield was not added to the class simply to get the rest of those guys, it does end our chances of Silvera and Surtain. But you are right, both were longshots anyways. My only real thought is how or if it affects Campbell. I think while it is not insurmountable, it certainly does not help with Campbell.

It may be more of a reason that OSU has stayed in touch with Houston Griffith. But it also allows for more space for the DEs in this class and possibly getting an extra OL. Campbell was going to be a hard pull anyway. But at least we were in it for a while

A plausible Ohio State Class of 2018 (revised 27 August 2017). Added WR L'Christian Smith (predicted); deleted DE Andrew Chatfield (decommit) and WR Cameron Brown (Nebraska). Glad to be right on Smith and wrong on Chatfield and Brown, as both seem to be half a notch below what Ohio State is currently recruiting. I'm not going to add any new names to the list just yet, but I'm keeping an eye on OG Jamaree Salyer, OT Nicholas Petit-Frere, LB Solomon Tuliaupupu, WR Amon-Ra St. Brown, DT Michael Thompson, and WR Jahan Dotson.

8 spots left on a 25 man class. And it looks more and more likely we only take 4 on the OL, split evenly between OG and OT assuming Jackson is in. Doesn't seem like the staff is pushing for another in that group. So we continue to pray for no injuries to that position group and for a noticeabale development within the stable of back ups. That's scary to me.

If I created a list of most indespensible players on the 2017/18 squad it starts with

1a- Happy Jamarco
1b- Billy Price

And who is there to fill in for those guys?

It's looking more and more likely that Burrell and Knox were misses. On the heels of many others like Trout, Lisle, etc etc etc. It also appears Myers has a long way to go. A great prospect no doubt but one that needs a good deal of work and he's an interior guy. So what is the future 2 deep at OT? We took 1 in the last class with Munford and it appears we are only taking 2 this class despite the cupboards being pretty bare. Yikes.

I mean, Pridgeon was brought in to play and can't get it done and he isn't listed as an OT back up anymore, he is now an interior guy and when Urban was asked about Bowens move to OG he cited Munford looking good. God help us if Munford is forced into action. Yikes. And as bad as the line looked to close out last year it was noticeably worse when Knox was called in. I just don't get why there is a seemingly low importance placed on the OL group. Games are won in the trenches and yet we continue to live on borrowed time.

If I knew we had Cook in the fold, there are several OT prospects I'd rather have in the fold before taking another elite DB like Campbell.

My list is a plausible class based on current Crystal Ball predictions. Campbell and Togiai are the biggest reaches and likely will not be in this class. I will add new names as some others drop off.

For the record, I'd also like to get some more OL in lieu of another DB. I believe that the Buckeyes will push hard for Nicholas Petit-Frere, Jamaree Salyer, and probably a few other guys (William Barnes, perhaps some late bloomer like Munford last year).

I think all teams, no matter how much talent is brought in, will always have depth problems on the O line. O line is so hard to predict from HS to college, no matter the star ranking of a kid. Jackson Carman is one of the best OTs for 2018 but won't face a DL as good as a backup for OSU during his football season. most DL he'll face he will out weigh by as much as 60-80lbs! You just keep brining in the top talent and trying to develop them to their best, so I agree that OL should be brought in over a DB.

From what I've been reading, Alabi is the backup LT, and if something were to happen to Prince, Bowen would slide to RT and Burrell would most likely become the RG. I think Urban has recruited a few guys who because their HS didnt pass much will start out as OG but eventually could be OT with additional coaching. An example of that would be Michael Jordan, who could be LT when Jones is gone, if the job doesn't become Alabi's. Its a win win, because if the staff sees that Alabi is fit to be the LT, then MJ could stay at LG and have the left side locked up. Myers and Davis are in the MJ mold, to where I see both starting at OG but could slide outside (unlike Tressel recruited OL who were not versatile). Guys like Knox and Feder and even possibly Pridgeon unfortunately will most likely be recruited over at this point as its dog eat dog on this time, especially the O line. and the 5 best will play, regardless of where they were recruited (I.e. Bowen and Alabi)

Agreed but it still feels like we don't have a 2 deep. More like a 1.4 deep. Like we have Burrell and Pridgeon to back up 5 guys. Seriously. That's how it appears. And when you consider next year, well..............

Thats essentially what it is. I mean you can also pencil in Alabi, Munford, Taylor/Wohlbaugh as backups somewhere as well
