tOSU Recruiting Discussion

I want Tufele more than anyone. I think he is the best DT in this class.
Yeah, that's the toughest question for me in the whole "who would you take for the last spot" scenario this year: (LB) Browning/Hines, (RB) Akers, (DB) Holmes/L Wade, or (DT) Tufele - I do not think Wilson is realistic but if he is, insert him here.

Choosing for the last few spots speaks to need as much/more than talent of each player vs each other IMO as everyone mentioned is a total stud.

Assuming 5 spots left as a guesstimate, the math isn't hard for remaining spots.

As stated by most: Grimes, Lindsey, Okudah seem to be in the class. They are all elite and needed.

So that leaves just 2 spots.

I personally think Akers is a game changer of the type that wins championships, the RB spot is so crucial, and our depth is so thin he absolutely makes my list if available. Before anyone mentions incoming guys like McCall, he is a HB/Pivot to me. And yes, the class has Dobbins who I love, but you can't have too many good/great RBs.

So that leaves me one more spot with a really, really tough choice.

After much deliberation I'd narrowly take Tufele.

Many have mentioned how hard it is to land elite DTs (tOSU can attest) and how much they impact the game. When a team can continue to pound you up the middle with a run game they can really neutralize your preferred offensive goals of up tempo, etc.

While Homes and L Wade are elite DBs (especially Holmes), you can hardly call the position a 'need' in this class so not sure it makes sense to use the "last spot" here. That's assuming S Wade sticks however so you keep recruiting and admittedly you don't say no if they want to join.

With Browning/Hines.......both total studs, and the position is less full in this class than DBs are but probably even with the DB overall team depth, so not a major need. But, if Browning and Okudah are a package deal of sorts that might be a difference maker.

So, in the end I guess I would have a harder time saying no to Akers and en elite DT because of the impact those positions have in the game and viewed against current depth and role within the '17 class.

(Just hearing how spoiled I sound at this rationale is comical but......blame Urban)

There could be 6 or 7 early departures for the NFL, with the potential for more depending on how guys do this season. There could also be some 4th year guys not come back for a 5th year.

It's not our job to keep tabs on the numbers. They'll work themselves out.

It's not our job to recruit either but we sit here and debate who we'd rather have in the class. Kind of feels like this is an issue we just don't want to consider.

What are you implying?

Are you implying Urban will cut players to sign folks or not renew scholarships?
Are you implying that Urban and company wont have conversations with 3rd & 4th year players who are on scholly but haven't played very much/if at all saying "your best chance for playing time is somewhere else."

And what if those 3rd- and 4th- year guys don't want to transfer somewhere else? What if they want to finish out their careers here? What do we do then?

That we're gonna end up pushing some guys out... or that we're going to be oversigned. I understand the whole "this is big boy CFB" rationale and all but, unless I'm mistaken, these players still don't get paid.

I think everybody's aware of that. It's not only common knowledge, people (not necessarily here) have speculated who is going to be pushed out. I haven't seen anyone dispute that tough decisions are going to be made by some players and the staff. It's a part of the game now.

Power 5 football is exactly like chicken nuggets. Sure...they look good when the product is finished, but how it's made isn't the prettiest.

If you were the head coach, what would you do?

Nope they don't get paid. Average cost for tuition at tOSU is In-state: $10,037 Out-of-state: $27,365 - so they dont get paid that... if they get R&B thats another $11,666 I'm not entirely sure what is covered but instate guy that has been there working towards a degree got paid ~ 30k in 3 years to learn a trade or craft. yep they dont get paid

They were offered a scholarship based on producing on the football field - can we agree on this? If they aren't quite cutout for D1 football at Ohio State and wish to stay then they would be allow to continue at Ohio state either on an academic scholarship or on their own dime. In most cases they would have gotten 3 or 4 years of free education that most folks go deep into debt for.

Does it suck - yes, do we wish it wasn't that way - yes. Life isn't always fair but they had advantages/requirements most other students didn't

The question for me is that if Akers is in do we lose Dobbins? I believe Dobbins is on record saying that he has no plans to take official visits to other school unless another RB commits in this class. He's not saying that he'll go elsewhere but it does appear that he would reopen his recruitment and become the dreaded soft verbal.

So in-state = $26K and out-of-state = $43K; for Fall & Spring
Tag on health insurance and medical care
Tag on meals beyond the caf plans
Tag on clothing and shoes
Tag on summer sessions and off-session room & board
Tag on tutorial services as well as computers
You're talking a big number

However, even with all this... we all know you still need money for normal life expenses during college.. so stipends make sense

Question.. do schollie athletes get an allowance to go to/from home once or twice a year? I assume no

He has said that and it would be unfortunate if he left because of it, but it sure wouldn't stop me from pursuing Akers. Same reason some classes have more than one QB. It's just too important of a position to the team. Look at USC a few of their great classes in the past....multiple RBs all very good.

If a RB decommitted from an elite class because we accepted a second RB commitment when the depth on the team is not exactly loaded then you have to question their willingness to compete.

Without out getting into to details about specific players, there are some players (RS-Jrs) who will graduate with their degrees after this season. Their are a few who might go to another school like Warren Ball did after he graduated. Others will simply graduate and move on. Others have some injury issues and if they do not perform or the injuries are to severe to continue to play football, their scholarships will not be renewed. There are a few underclassmen that have not performed in the classroom, in the communities, on the field or in practice or all the above that will be released from their scholarships. Scholarships can change from year to year, even semester to semester.

Pretty much everyone who posts on this site has a good idea how things play out in recruiting as well as how some kids get released from their scholarships at different points during their time as a student athlete (yes sad but true).

While the coaching staff is not perfect, there are young men in the OSU football program that simply do not pan out for various reasons. Examples like B. Dunn (Pun intended), Bruce Judson (once committed but the coaches cooled and it was over before it truly began) or health reasons (D. Munger). The coaches know much more than we do about each player and recruit so I don't get to upset about it. Really if young man changes his mind about attending Ohio State, its OK but if the program changes their minds about a recruit or current player, its wrong? I defer to the coaches because I have no clue what's going on other than what I read.

Crunching the numbers (did this yesterday during lunch) with graduation, draft declaration, and general departures (mutual or otherwise), it looks like the 2017 recruiting class will number around 20 (+/- 1).
