tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Steve Helwagen: Alex I was asked yesterday in my chat about my choices for the last for recruits I shared my list if you had to take four guys to complete this class or five who would they be?

Alex Gleitman: Tough call, but if I could pick five, with no restrictions, using realistic options, I probably go with RB Cam Akers, OL Trey Smith, DT Jay Tufele, LB Baron Browning, and DB Jeff Okudah. Crazy, but they COULD get all of those guys, even though I don’t think they do.

That's sick... to already have the class we do.. and odds-on to get these five... sick

That is a sick list, BUT...any list without Grimes and Lindsey leaves me disappointed.

My list (not that anyone asked) is...

Grimes
Lindsey
Smith
Browning
Okudah

Duh... great post.... cannot agree more... Grimes and Lindsey; then Okudah... top my list... what was I thinking... sick

I was just about to edit my list to include *non negotiable next to Grimes, Lindsey and Okudah. I'd love to have Smith (can never have enough stud OL) but I'd be really sad to miss out on any of the non negotiables. Someone tell Alex to change his list.

I'd way rather have Cam Akers than Smith. Any day. RB depth is thin and unproven. And the only players who touch the ball more than the center and QB is the RB. Plus we have 3 great OL guys already and JC in the '18 class looking very promising. So gimme Akers please. Otherwise agreed on Grimes, Lindsey, Okudah and Browning.

Okudah, grimes and Lindsey all should be Buckeyes in a month. That leaves 1-2 spots. I think they want to hold one for Akers but he may not commit until late. I think they pursue Holmes until wade is on campus in January. I don't think we take another commit that isn't Akers until the November time frame when we have a better idea of spots an who projects to leave early or transfer and know if it's 20 or 22. Most of our targets after those 4 are planning on deciding late as far as I recall.

Given that Wade is considered a "soft-commit", I'd be surprised if the staff doesn't continue to recruit Holmes until the very end.

I'm also hoping for another DT in the class. I'd be ecstatic if they can land Tufele. However, I'm hoping Meyer and staff can get Marvin Wilson up for a visit.

Is Trey Smith really that much of a possibility?
This class has been full of surprises, but I would say doubtful. With three OL committed already, he's not exactly a need. Would the staff say no? Tough to say, but they're already crunched to the brim on numbers. If only there were a few more schollies available...

No naming names but I bet it's safe to assume further attrition in the ranks to allow a few more members to the already incredible 2017 class. Just look at what's transpired this offseason.

I would say Smith is in if he wants in but not very likely to happen, so probably a moot point. But it seems the staff has instructed other commitments to go after him...I think he might be a late commitment also and with a class mostly full, why not chase an elite guy like that and see if there is room at the end? But my list is a mix of "want" is predicated by both talent and need as follows if there is only 5 spots left: Okudah, Grimes, Akers, Holmes, and Lindsey.

Browning is right on the cusp and I definitely want him, same for Lamont Wade, who is every bit as good as Holmes. Jaylen Harris is a strong possibility to be "in" imo...right now I would say Akers and Holmes end up closer to home come signing day. Smith falls outside that list only because we are so well stocked at OL. Marvin Wilson would be #1 for me but too much of a longshot. Final note, I see Hines as interchangeable with Browning in terms of talent and could just as easily end up in this class.

How are the numbers going to work? There are very few seniors on this team and even fewer juniors who could possibly go pro after this year... so what kind of attrition are we looking at to make the numbers work? And are we going to be ok with how it's done?
