Buckeye Football Recruiting: OSU Set to Sign Fewest Ohio Prospects Ever?

15-07-24-FB-0432.jpg

To say that Ohio high school football is the lifeblood of Ohio State Football would be like saying blood is the lifeblood of life. It's a bit obvious. You basically can't have Buckeye football without Ohio high school football, and you certainly can't have a nationally-prominent program without locally-focused recruiting.

That is the way it has always been and that is the way it always will be. However, as numbers tend to do, there is some fluctuating that goes on.

Over the last 25 years the Buckeyes have signed an average of 12 Ohioans every year. Sometimes that number is in the high teens and sometimes it is less than 10. The lowest number, however, came in 1998 when Ohio State signed just eight players from Ohio.

Prior to 1973 the only scholarship limits were based on what schools could afford, but that changed with the implementation of Title IX, which made schools distribute their money more equitably between the sexes. The first scholarship limits for football were set at 105 from 1973-1977, then to 95 from 1978 to 1991, then to the current 85 that is in place now.

Since there is only so much research one person can be expected to do, if we can agree that Ohio State signed eight or more Ohioans every year prior to the current scholarship limits — which would have also been morelikely given the lessened traveling around the country back then due to lower budgets — then the Buckeyes' 2017 recruiting class is setting up to have the lowest number of Ohioans ever, or at least since football stopped being of the "Ironman" variety.

Right now there are five Ohio prospects committed in OSU's 2017 recruiting class, and that's including cornerback commit Marcus Williamson, who transferred from Westerville South to the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida.

Joining Williamson are Miamisburg offensive lineman Josh Myers, Powell athlete Brendon White, Cincinnati defensive tackle Jerron Cage, and Akron quarterback Danny Clark. The other nine commits are all from out of state.

Been watching the recruiting shell game for too long.......there has been more 'action' in recruiting, vis a vis the trips to tOSU to check out the sights and visit with Urban, and it seems that more and more of the elite players wish to become Buckeyes. Absolutely wonderful. How many stick and sign their LOI's in early Feb remains to be seen. Very fluid, both for the player and the team. Shiznit7 has a great idea, using vcash as incentive ? Would love to see more 5*'s than Alabama, but would be as happy for production and growth of 3*'s into NFL first rounders (plus a National Championship or two along the way). Gotta love it, great time to be a Buckeye. Expectations in C'bus are always high, but the last two years have surpassed even that. Urban is the pied piper, and the players are giving him (and tOSU) the respect deserved. Go Bucks. Produce on the field........

Very probable 20-man class for 2017

***** - 17 - #4 OT - Josh Myers - verbal
***** - 18 - #3 CB - Lamont Wade - OSU once led big, will PA schools win?
***** - 20 - #1 OLB - Baron Browning - OSU near top, coming back again this summer.
***** - 23 - #3 RB - Cam Akers - does OSU lead?
***** - 26 - #2 DE - Chase Young - Will OSU hold off Maryland and others?
**** .. - 31 - #3 WR - Tyjon Lindsey - OSU leads and will land him soon.
**** .. - 32 - #2 DT - Haskell Garrett - verbal
**** .. - 46 - #4 CB - Shaun Wade - (soft) verbal
**** .. - 51 - #10 OT - Jake Moretti - verbal
**** .. - 71 - #9 WR - Trevon Grimes - OSU leads big, deciding soon

Grayshirt to 2018? **** .. - NR - NR QB - Danny Clark - grayshirt? regular signee? Unknown.

Most likely alternatives:

***** - 15 - # 1 ILB - Anthony Hines - OSU among top schools
**** .. - 61 - #4 ATH - Jamyest Williams - OSU in the mix for tough southern battle. Bill says OSU gets 1-2 of these DBs.

Next tier of prospects, downgraded based on their likelihood to sign at OSU:

***** - 01 - #1 RB - Najee Harris - likely sticks with Bama but OSU in the mix
***** - 08 - #1 CB - Darnay Holmes - likely Stanford but OSU in the mix.
***** - 09 - #1 DT - Marvin Wilson - OSU a late arrival, right in the mix, no one predicting they sign him at this point
**** .. - 41 - #3 DT - Jay Tufele - said OSU led late May. No one is predicting him to be in this class yet.
**** .. - 104 - #15 WR - Jaylen Harris - probably a buckeye if OSU pushes hard.
**** .. - 149 - #8 OG - Darnell Ewell - a possible plan B at DT if a spot or two opens up.
If the number still is 20, who doesn't make it in the class now that Wavy Dub has a spot?

Blake could grayshirt. I don't love their chances of signing both wades and riep (they could be trailing for Amir, and there's plenty of reason for uncertainty with both wades) , though now they seem to be hanging in for Darnay and Jamyest also.

Maybe the class goes above 20?

I'm wondering what the goal is for each position. I expect a 20 man class, so 6 spots left. We seem to be wanting 3 more receivers, one more rb, 2 more DB, 1 more DT, and a LB? Does that sound accurate? The thing that puzzles me is the going hard for another RB when we appear to be loaded with young talent and already have one beast firmly committed.

I think they want 2 more WRs. Grimes + _____? Lindsey was the guy, but maybe DPJ isn't as gone as they thought? Plus Tee Higgins keeps claiming he's interested. I'm still not sure what to make of Jaylen.

This is what I envision:

15. WR Grimes
16. S Okudah
17. RB Akers
18. DE Young
19. DB L.Wade/A.Riep (I wouldn't bet on getting both)
20. LB Browning / Hines

Lindsey is a stud. Do they have room if they only have 20 spots? Especially if they manage to get all of their DBs? Do you take Lindsey if it gives away a spot for an extra guy like DPJ or Hines or Tufele?

This class is absurdly talented so there's no room to clear weight other than two grayshirts for Blake and Danny.

They're trading up for a better model than Sibley. I don't like the ethics of the thing but that's how things are done everywhere now. They also are not loaded at tailback. Akers likely gets some touches but waits until year 2 to push for the starting spot. Samuel is gone by then. Weber will hope to be. That leaves Williams and Dobbins.
