tOSU Recruiting Discussion

@wadc45 : Given what we already have committed and what we already have in terms of OL on campus is it realistic to say they only take the 4 commits they have now and call it a day, and try to pick up depth at another position?

While that might be possible I would say the fact that they continue to recruit Bookser tells me they still want one more body on the offensive line. I think in an ideal world they want Smith, Lattimore, Bookser, Thomas and if some other 5-star/can't miss falls in their lap then they will find a way to make room.

The fact that Jermaine Roberts says he is planning to visit in January is a little puzzling to me. I'm guessing he must be some sort of insurance policy...as is Martrell McGraw. I' guessing the staff sees them as backup options to Smith and Lattimore but that is just a guess.

Do you think Malik McDowell is a backup plan for Thomas or would they take both if given the opportunity?

I think Thomas is a must take regardless of whoever else is in. So to me, the decision then becomes about McDowell versus Bookser. We've heard the OSU staff may prefer McDowell on the offensive line. And if that's the case, I don't see McDowell as a must take but that's just my guess. I'm not even sure it is an either/or between Bookser and McDowell. My guess, and again it's just a guess based on my observations, is that Bookser is Plan A and McDowell is Plan B.

I'm wondering why no one at OSU, (or any big program) is showing any interest in Gus Ragland, the Moeller QB. The kid has ONLY led the team to two consecutive state championships, was the winning pitcher in the state baseball championships and plays guard for the basketball team that will be making another run at the city, regional and state championships. For two years he played wideout and was #1 or 2 receiver for Hendrix (Notre Dame back up QB) If you want to see how tough he is just take a look at his youtube file from the state game. Mentor tried hitting him hard all night to intimidate him and yet he ran or passed for 5 touchdowns.

He had 8 td's in the championship game.

Though McDowell is rated just as high as Thomas, McDowell is a plan b? I'd think it'd be an either/or scenario if both are getting looks at DE. Never heard McDowell for OL though, I take it he's rated just as high on the offensive side of the ball? If that's e case wouldn't McDowell be more beneficial to the class since he can play both ways?

I tend to think McDowell ends up at OT or DT, he's listed at 6'6 290 by 3 of the recruiting services now. Although he's primarily a defensive player right now, his frame is still somewhat lean which means you can add weight accordingly to his frame wether he was an OT or DT. Where as Thomas's frame is nearly maxed at 6'3 260 because he's already filled out. So I see both recruits heading toward different positions once they get here. Based on need and versatility I would put McDowell ahead of Thomas but both are elite talents and I think Thomas has a lot better chance of ending up here. The way the staff appears to be playing it right now is with 23 players with Bookser and McDowell vying for the last spot. It will be interesting to see where the staff goes if a spot or 2 opens up.

I've been way too busy to follow recruiting closely for the past few months, but will be trying to follow over the holidays. Wondering if someone would be kind enough to let me know if we are still in it for any of the following linemen: Damian Prince, Roderick Johnson, Brian Wallace, Damien Mama, Frank Ragnow, Denzel Ward. Also interested in latest news on Bookser, M. Jones, and Tim Gardner. Thanks in advance...

Tim Gardner committed to Indiana today, FWIW. Gardner's Scout Profile

With the O'Brien to NFL talk gaining traction I am really hoping we can land Gesicki. If we end with 23 I would absolutely love to finish off the class with him, Solomon Thomas, Lattimore and Smith. What a class that would be!!

Coming into this recruiting class it was obvious we needed big numbers and talent for LB and OL. I'd give our class an A+ for LB and an A- for the OL mostly because if we finish with 4 we didn't get 5 liked I had hoped for - really wanted Mavety. Still the 4 OL guys we have are very good so I will be satisfied. With Bookser going to Pitt and Prince off the table I don't want to reach for a 5th guy unless there is some late surprise/flip. I'd take Roderick Johnson if we was available but beyond that I would rather finish with the 4 we have.

Landing Dixon was huge....if we can land Gesicki too I would be absolutely thrilled with the offensive skill guys. A class of Campbell, Samuel, Brown, McLaurin, Dixon and Gesicki would be quite a haul and simply fantastic in the variety of skills sets. Not really sure how you could ask for better talent in a wide range of areas out of 6 guys. If we finish with that group the only thing you could have wished for was the elusive tall WR but it would really be getting picky to complain about that. With Mike Thomas (and possibly Green) being taller guys who were able to sit and learn this year I think we will be fine. With Baugh on the roster, adding Gesicki would be really nice to add in the evolution of the position for us. Thinking about the offensive weapons on this team in the next few years is just unreal and I hope we can bring MG on board.

I'd love to end with:
Lattimore
smith
Thomas/McDowell
rogers/Roberts
bonus:
Taylor/ragnow/Johnson

That'd be a great end to the class without the extra OL. The OL would all be a kind of a reach but would add more depth. The first 4 wpuld all be guys that could possibly step in and contribute. Amd wpuld certainly have us finish in the top 3 in the recruiting ranks (except according to espn, who'd rank us #20)
