tOSU Recruiting Discussion

I'm wondering why no one at OSU, (or any big program) is showing any interest in Gus Ragland, the Moeller QB. The kid has ONLY led the team to two consecutive state championships, was the winning pitcher in the state baseball championships and plays guard for the basketball team that will be making another run at the city, regional and state championships. For two years he played wideout and was #1 or 2 receiver for Hendrix (Notre Dame back up QB) If you want to see how tough he is just take a look at his youtube file from the state game. Mentor tried hitting him hard all night to intimidate him and yet he ran or passed for 5 touchdowns.

OSU has enough scholarship QBs. And if no major school is paying attention to him, and Robert Morris and Indiana St. being his only offers so far.....that should say something about what they see in him.

Although based off of the teams that are "showing interest" maybe he's looking for something most major schools can't provide. (Northwestern, Columbia, Cornell)

It's going to be reeeal interesting to see who gets to play next year. And to realize we can't forget about players from Meyer's talented class of 2013. The competition is going to be very very high especially in the WR positions.

WR and CB as well as RB will be very interesting battles. And when shazier leaves, I believe all 3 LB spots will be up for grabs.

Ragland isn't athletic enough to play qb in osu's system. And probably doesn't have the ceiling as high as higher rated qbs. But it doesn't matter, Moeller always has very smart, high character kids. He could end up in ivy league, or playing for a high education school in a power comference (I.e. vandy, NW, bc). I doubt he's worried about play professional ball

I will disagree about Ragland's athleticism. I think he's under the radar because he probably favors baseball too much. The kid is a superb athlete. You don't run away from Colerain defenders if you aren't.

I've been way too busy to follow recruiting closely for the past few months, but will be trying to follow over the holidays. Wondering if someone would be kind enough to let me know if we are still in it for any of the following linemen: Damian Prince, Roderick Johnson, Brian Wallace, Damien Mama, Frank Ragnow, Denzel Ward. Also interested in latest news on Bookser, M. Jones, and Tim Gardner. Thanks in advance...

Prince, Johnson, and Ragnow are maybes but I don't think we're favored or even 50/50 for any of them. Ward, no. Haven't heard anyone mention Mama or Wallace as possibilities. Bookser just visited us. He will decide after his Pitt visit. They are thought to be his leader. M. Jones is taking visits but I think most still expect him to be a Buckeye. Haven't heard anything about Gardner.

He's got the scores to qualify for Ivy and he's in the top 10% of his class

The kid is 6'3, over 200 lbs, plays GUARD in basketball and did something Jalin Marshall, Braxton Miller, Cardell Jones, Justin Zwick and Troy Smith didn't do; led his team to two state championships in football and one in baseball. His stats, against some of the best teams in Ohio High School football, have been among the best in the greater Cincinnati area for all four years. I think the suggestion that he isn't athletic enough is wrong.

I can understand the lack of interest at OSU given their current depth at the position and the kids they are recruiting, and the fact that he really didn't jell at QB until October a year ago - but Jeeez, what he's done since then, against some of the top football schools in Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky, is nothing short of phenomenal.

Prince = no chance
Johnson = no chance unless he schedules a visit
Wallace = no chance
Mama = no chance
Ragnow = Plan B
Ward = don't believe he's even being recruited at this point

Bookser is the target. We'll know more after his visit to Pitt. Jones is a Buckeye. Gardner will likely end up somewhere other than OSU.

@wadc45 : Given what we already have committed and what we already have in terms of OL on campus is it realistic to say they only take the 4 commits they have now and call it a day, and try to pick up depth at another position?

The Glenville kids will secure two great CB's in Webb and Lattimore, two dynamic safeties in Smith and Hooker, and finally, a guy that can play safety or linebacker in Hubbard. I am excited about all of them. Webb is your lock down guy. Lattimore is your cover and big play guy. The safeties are very athletic and they will make you pay if you screw up. Hubbard is the smart sure tackler. They are all physical. They are all fast and athletic. The only concern I have is their thickness. Habbard has the frame, but none them give you that scary punishing monster in the backfield. One constant with the SEC and great defenses of old is that you need bodies that can tackle over and over and your guys get up immediately, while the other guys get beat up. It is not enough to be aggressive. You have to be able to take the beating in tough games. All in all, very pleased with the group.
