Is 5 our number for the position group? If we land something like mentioned above and we can land, say another 4 star player or a 2nd JUCO player do we take them?

I can't see the staff Not taking Mavety and Elurmanor if they both want it. Those two would be ready to play. Then hopefully take Jamarco Jones and/or Quenton Nelson with Trout, and redshirt them. That would be Huge.

Not sure our need is THAT great to tie up 2 scholarships on JUCO OL. No doubt one would be great but the rest we can develop with young talent. I think Decker and Farris are coming along nicely at tackle, plus we have Dodson and Lisle is the wings, Trout is in, and Jones looks likely. I see the need for one JUCO OT to come in and compete right away, but not two. Now I do stand with Wade/86...I think/hope we end up with Trout, M. Jones, J. Jones, Mustipher, and Mavety. However, it would be awfully tough if we got those 5 and someone like R. Johnson, Prince, or Orlando Brown wanted to hop on board.

For awhile I've been thinking that the numbers might end up looking like:

3 OL
1 OL who is ready to play from day 1 (JUCO or unusually developed HS)
1 two way player who could go either DL or OL depending on how things shake out

Yeah I lumped JUCO #2 and a 4 star OT together in my question which wasn't wise. Better to ask if we got the 5 type players mentioned and we could land a solid 6th OL prospect, a 4 star type would we take them?

I don't know about the 5th lineman being a project OL/DL type personally. I see us taking 5 true OL guys as a given. I realize we have good players in Decker, Dodson, Lisle etc but we say goodbye to 4 starters on the line next year with a pretty empty stable. Yes, you can come up with good players to start in 2014 especially with a JUCO player added but let me ask you this: who are our backups in 2014 if we lose 2 starters to injury. Think about that. We need to load up this year IMO or it could really come back to haunt us.

I would definitely think 5 is a given and 6 is not out of the question (especially if the 6th could play defense as well, as Mustipher or Nelson easily could). I was just saying I think two JUCOs is not likely.

But I agree wholeheartedly on the bolded...depth is essential but I think we round out a decent two deep with experience should we have a couple injuries after we lose 4 starters next year, given little attrition and at least 5 OL this year. It would look something like:

LT: Decker, Dodson, Trout
G: Underwood, Elflein, Gardner, Mustipher/Nelson
C: J. Boren, Munger(not sure who plays center, but he is interior)
G: Brown, Baldwin, Lisle, M. Jones
RT: Farris, Mavety/Elumenor?, Baldwin, J. Jones?

- To me, that is a lot of bodies at the very least and 17 scholarship OL. Of course alot of that is unproven but those are the cards we are dealt with regardless of what happens in this class. Plus I have a feeling many of these guys will be getting some PT this year to get them ready.

10 (11 if Price or Munger switch) OL for 2014. 14 available scholarships (right now) for the 2014 class.

You really think they'll tie up six of those ships and potentially go all the way to 17 scholarship OL?

I count 16 if we get 5 this year, 17 if we get 6. Only way I see us taking 6 is if we know some attrition is coming down the pipe at OL or they think one prospect is just as capable of playing DL as OL. In any event, I think the number is 5 as of now.

Depends on how many of those guys are returning next year. I believe one came very close to transferring recently. Another will graduate this year and is a smart kid with a bright future in the real world who may not want to come back if he is still a backup.

Plus, we don't know where Munger ends up in the long term. So many questions that need to be answered before they decide on an OL total.

I would guess they want to get 3 or 4 committed pretty quickly and then stay involved with some others if they end up needing 5 or 6.

Looks like Raekwon made it to campus without Autry.

Autry skipping a visit plus Hilliman announcing his top 10 with Ohio State at the top brings up some questions about the RB/Pivot recruiting strategy moving forward.

With Campbell Jr. already on board I would guess the staff is going to go really, really slow with their recruiting at these two positions moving forward.

They might put on the full court press late in the game for someone once they know for sure that they have a spot open, but with the RBs already on the roster and the potential pivots they landed in the '13 class they have the luxury of being extremely picky and patient.

This will likely work out well for some of the big fish that are going to wait until signing day to make a decision anyway, but it looks like it might alienate a guy like Autry who looked ready to possibly make an early decision.
