tOSU Recruiting Discussion

I would have offered Henderson and Barker a long time ago. I don't like putting all our eggs in the Watson basket. But that's just me.

I don't like taking our eggs out of the Watson basket just to feel comfortable at QB. OSU is really tight on space with the number of big time prospects and limited scholarships for another year.

This isn't just another position offer. This may very well be the heir to Braxton, they cannot miss at this position. Even if Barrett pans out this class has to provide a useful backup at the very least, and one that is ready in year one or two. That's a really tall order.

That's why he said at the end, "but that's just me."

Sorry, I just dislike seeing a fan state their opinion and then get responded to with "the staff and coach know way more" typical comment. This is a message board meant for discussion, if we just went along with whatever the staff did without talk than there would be no point for this board. The bottom line is, as great as this staff is, they won't always "get it right" so the OP may very well be right instead of the staff, time will tell.

With that being said, I think the staff is more focused and impressed with the '15 QB class, as am I, and would help to balance the scholarship class breakdown at the position.

I wasn't trying to stifle the conversation- just directing it more towards how worthless and uninformed all of our opinions are on the topic, particularly when compared to the coaching staff who has had more success on the recruiting trail than we have ever seen.

But please, feel free to continue our combined expert analysis of the situation based on third and fourth party information. I look forward to reading it for the next 11 months (and before I get the "if you don't like it don't read it" line, there are useful bits of information in here from time to time).

After reading Clarity's call to action for the spring drive, I'd like to elaborate a bit more so as not to discourage discussion.

Point #1: Recruiting is an extremely hit or miss science/art where even the most obviously dominant high school players sometimes don't pan out in college for various reasons.

Quarterbacks are the hardest of all to project and although I don't have any numbers to back it up- I am fairly certain that "can't miss" QBs don't pan out far more often than most other positions.

Point #2: Ohio State is currently "in" on a large number of QB prospects. DeShaun Watson, DeShone Kizer, Drew Barker, Caleb Henderson, Kyle Allen, William Crest, William Ulmer plus any other names that might emerge over the summer/during their senior seasons.

While personal preferences might exist as to who you would like to see in the class, I think most people would be hard pressed to make the argument that one is clearly superior to the others.

Point #3: Although recruiting is extending further and further back into a player's high school career, there is still plenty of time to bring to campus/evaluate/put on the full court press for all of the QB prospects.

If one or two QBs commit to other schools before Ohio State makes a final decision, that won't stop the staff from going after them once they do make that decision and it won't affect any of the other outstanding QB candidates listed above.

Point #4: Does anyone really think that Ohio State is not going to end up with an extremely good QB prospect in the 2014 class? Given the coaching staff's expertise, first hand knowledge of each recruitment (which, once again, none of us have) and track record- in particular their ability to close the deal, even on committed prospects, once they decide they want a player in the class, I am perfectly comfortable letting this play out.

So, I apologize if I am stifling conversation or people's opinions by pointing out that worrying about a particular QB this early in the 2014 class is a waste of time.

If you disagree, here's Alex Anzolone's thread from exactly this time last year. Read through it and get back to me and why it is important to worry about recruiting at this time of year.

If I was looking for a voice of reason, I wouldn't be on a football recruiting message board. :shake:

The only thing I would add in the context of this discussion is that Ohio State may not feel a necessity to take a QB in this class. Some of the factors involved would be; 1) How strongly does Braxton feel about returning for his senior year?
2) How does the staff feel about Cardale's development so far? 3) how does the staff feel about J.T.'s work ethic and potential in the short time he has been on campus? 4) Are there any 2015 Qb's that they already know they will want? 5) Other than Watson, are there any 2014 QB's they like more than the 2015 guys they are targeting? The answers to these questions will be in flux over the next ten months and will be constantly monitored and re-evaluated by the staff.
So, to answer 86's question, I think it's quite possible that we don't take a QB in this class.

There are 2 offers out to 2015 QBs, one in Florida and another in Texas.

I suppose I should have added "if the staff decides that they want one" for clarification.

If the coaches decide that adding an extra OL, LB or DB is a higher priority I would be alright with that as well.

As has been mentioned, there are several '15 QBs that are already getting some attention which indicates that may be in the cards- or at least that the coaches may be preparing for that possibility.

I like where OSU is with Jamarco Jones and Quenton Nelson. Add those two to Jones and Trout and one of the JUCO OL and I think OSU gets healthy on the offensive line in 2013. The kid coming with Peppers, Juwan Bushell-Beatty, also intrigues me. Picked up an offer from Tennessee recently to go along with BC, Florida, FSU, Michigan, Rutgers and WVU. I sitll like Roderick Johnson a lot as well.

Sam Mustipher has been to campus quite a bit as well. Head to head with Nelson for an inside spot?

OT Kyle Trout
OT Jamarco Jones
OT JUCO/swing for the fences
OG Marcelys Jones
OG Nelson/Mustipher

look about right?
