Game Thread tOSU @ Penn State, Oct 25th @ 8pm ET, ESPN

Like you said about not spreading the field, that attributes to his 63%. A large majority was off screens or quick slants. No down-field passes pretty much all night. When you have a great rushing D like PSU, you need to be able to spread the field, stretch it down to make sure they cannot stack the box, and we failed to do that at all. All the stuff we liked seeing in the last 4 games or so we decided to ignore. Pounding the ball at times is fine, but you have to open it up with spreading it around passing, something we failed to do, have to keep them honest.
Yep and IMO it's because the coaches once again have a preconceived notion what we can and cannot do before a snap is even played. How would we know we can't go vertical if we don't even try? If we do try (because we did a time or two) if there's pressure on JT it doesn't mean every time he goes back he will be pressured. Our offensive line isn't so bad that we couldn't even try. You know sometimes players will surprise you if you just trust them once in a while and call a game according to what the team is giving you. In this game PSU was attacking the LOS and everyonr was 10 yards from the LOS. We did nothing to back them off all game.

We ran our most basic read-option run on practically every single play in overtime. Luckily Barrett made good reads and executed. The success on offense in overtime was thanks to everything but creative play calls.
I have always hated the "play not to lose" philosophy in sports and unfortunately I see that too much with this staff.

I guess you can say Illinois will be terrible team - until they play against us. Then, like all other teams, they will not be terrible. Because we are "Ohio STate", other teams see us as a "king of the Hill" and play like hell and try knock us off. Penn State took that attitude against us last night. I knew they would. Maybe we needed a game like that to put us in a different perspective. Maybe we did at times - "play not to lose" but we DID find a way to win. So we move onto the next game. But for sure, we will find out what we are made of, on the 8th of November.

I get that Barrett wasn't playing well which limited play calling a lot, but I'm not asking for deep passes every play when I ask that they open it up a little bit. Maybe roll him out of the pocket once or twice with some easy dump offs in the flats, though?
To add to that, I'm convinced Herman hates TE's. He will show them some love early on, and then completely abandon it.

What I find kind of silly is the idea that you're not allowed to have a bad game. Just to be clear, MSU is a team that will get shellacked in the playoff? I mean, after all they barely got past Purdue, an even worse team than PSU, with a 10x easier atmosphere, and are not involved with a weird ass one sided rivalry with them. We do the same and have no shot?
