tOSU Indiscretions of May (Mega Merge)

I kinda agree w/ Alan's last post-the sarcasm. Should he be punished-absolutely. Is this a sign of a program falling apart-I really doubt it. This really is a college students will be college students kinda thing-unlike Skeete or Irizarry or Smith's booster fiasco. Suspend him one game, and make his life very unpleasant this summer. I posted earlier in the thread about team captains taking leadership, and I think Tressel needs to emphasize that. The kids on the team all hang out and party together-the captains need to take a leadership role-act as a DD if necessary, on a rotating basis; drag Haw aside for some intense conversation-I'm sure Salley or Hawk could set him straight.

Assuming he did it, suspend him for one month, I say...September. Let him practice and be around his teammates, make sure he stays in school, but no playing time. That would encompass 4 home games, including 2 huge ones against Texas and Iowa. This would hit him where it hurts, send out a message to the rest of the team that you won't get the national showcase if you embarass the team and the university, and would still keep him within the framework of the team concept so he hopefully wouldn't quit, transfer, and/or do something stupid again. Then he could come back and fight for the playing time, the same as anyone else is doing in the course of the season, and hopefully have learned his lesson. Actions demand consequences, but those consequences should also lend growth opportunities...this would be both IMO.

Edit: Kicking him off the team might make some feel better given the recent track record, but parents aren't going to send their children to a place where they're cut loose entirely when they make one mistake that doesn't hurt another person (no matter how boneheaded, stupid, and moronic it is). He needs to be punished, and have a chance to learn something. Then if he doesn't....you have a different set of circumstances.

I think the university should buy out an old motel six near campus and make it a football only dorm. Two guys to a room. Then, they should put a big fence around it and have buses transport the kids to and from class and practice. Otherwise they should stay in the "dorm" and study homework or film.

I'm sure ESPN would write an article about it, and then Gene would have to invite the NCAA to investigate whether or not that was a legal thing to do... lol

Kick one of them off the team right now and you will have a lot less to deal with down the road.
Problems with that this team would have.
(Damn -- I've caught a Yoda bug).

Skeete -- Due Process, innocent till proven guilty. Kick him off the team, in the unlikely event he is found innocent in a court of law tOSU faces a significant civil action. Right now he is indefinitely suspended.
That's the way it should be till Ron O'Brien and his cohorts in the Franklin County prosecutors office wrap up the case.

Haw -- A) You've got the perception issue, if Skeete is indefinitely suspended, then why not Haw? Looked at through that lens the lesser charge facing Haw cannot be met immediately by harsher punishment. B) You have an issue of measured response to consider, as others have suggested kicking Haw of the team is a harsh punishment for a supremely silly action.

thanks some for getting it.....how many here made mistakes in college?? did your parents kick you out of college and say "go fend for yourself.?" No, they loved you and wanted the best for you.....

how many here have kids in college?? If they get caught at a party with a joint in their hand, do you kick them out of college?? No, you love them and do everything you can to make their lives better....

that's not saying they should not be punished, but kicked to the curb, no.....

Skeete, Cooper and others are different situations......If Haw continues to have problems, then serious actions may be needed....

And just think how that approach would help recruiting.

Yale can make an example of its kids and not see its program suffer. Not OSU.

The rub for me is that last week I was lambasting Skeete because there was simply no excuse for an athlete selling dope - I didn't, and still don't, care what everyone else is doing.

In this instance I want to let this more or less slide (normal punishment) because smokiing dope is SO prevalent. It is doing this in the shadow of Skeete's screw up that makes it so devastating.

I see all these posts from folks who have had it and want Haw kicked to the curb. Do the members of this board REALLY want OSU to be know as the zero tolerance program? Or is that only so long as we win?

I know that i am not a part of this conversation really, but i do have an oppinion on this. My father always told me that football is fun and a privilage(sp?). However, he made it very clear to me that school came first. The moment that I got introuble or it looked like i was going to let other things get in the way of school they were over.

I don't know how talanted eric haw is but if this type of stuff gets in the way of him getting his degree then maybe football isn't for him. Lets be honest, most college players don't go on to become professionals

I guess what i am trying to say is that if i caught my son doing drugs i would not kick him out of school, but i would kick him out of the fraternity or whatever other extracaricular activities he was doing.

That being said, if he is a legit nfl prospect, my oppinion changes, I am a firm believer that you go to school to prepare yourself for your future career. If the nfl is in his future then football is no longer classified as extracaricular.

Lonesome,

It's hard to say with someone that young who hasn't had a chance to take the field yet in terms of his NFL prospects, which plays to my earlier point about suspending him for a period of time from playing (I said a month) and see if he learns his lesson or not. I absolutely don't advocate kicking him to the curb...but he must be punished.

The flip side of your argument Lonesome is what if football is the only real reason he is going (or can afford to go) to college? I know, there are inherent problems with that approach in an ideal world too, but I'd rather see the kid stick around and get his education than cut him loose for a misdemeanor.

Take A Deep Breath

At first I was as pissed as everyone else on this board but I think I've come to my senses. You know what... hardcore expectations of a team with superior athletes who all get good grades, never smoke a joint, never lie, never do stupid things with a female and never get into a brawl are just a set-up for disappointment. These are not only young men... they're football players! Some aggressiveness and bravado comes with the territory. This won't be the last problem we have... it is simply the nature of big time winning college football that even though everything you do is scrutinized a player will still occasionally do something stupid. Ask USC, Miami, Florida State, Oklahoma, and yes Michigan. Will ESPN go crazy with the story? If they do can you blame them? They've got to save face from Maurice Clarett snow job they aired and stood by so vehemently. To suggest our team needs to be shaken up, to me, is to believe the hype.

This whole thing was blown up because Clarett went to a reporter about what he thought was happening. The reporter, salivating at a national scoop, went with it without considering his statements to be the ramblings of a frustrated and ill-advised young man. He just saw a star tailback throwing serious charges against a football national powerhouse. Don't be surprised if ESPN milks everything that comes out of OSU if for no other reason than to vindicate itself for the Clarett story. All these "problems" with OSU football are media puffery. Notice how they all built up the old and previously addressed charges from the NCAA for days before finally airing the real news... the fact that none of Clarett's allegations was substantiated. Skeete, Haw and Smith are individual issues and there are undoubtedly others. If you try to paint the vast majority of our players that way I suggest you say it to their face... I'll be there to pick up your teeth. The worst part for me is it's making other teams in the conference look like choir boys. Seeing us take these hits is their greatest inducement to have a quiet off-season.

I know Haw should have known better and I'm sure he crapped his pants when he saw the officer and will never do it again (next time he'll be more discreet), but to trash Tressel and tag the team as troubled over this is going too far. Haw will take his licks and maybe sit out a few games unless he has a real drug problem. Assuming he'll face some sort of suspension he'll be back by the time we play Iowa. After he rips them for a few long ones.. all will be forgotten.

i think that those of us who want him off the team, are only saying so because he's a backup RB. what would you guys be saying if teddy or santonio or hawk, any one of our star players, was caught for a similar misdeed? i highly doubt you guys would want them kicked off the team.

i don't think that tibor is saying that tressel is a bad coach. what he is pointing out is the hypocricy of buckeye fans, and sports fans in general. when we like our coach, if a player messes up, it's the player's fault (as it should be). but when we don't like a coach...we will use anything to tear him down, even stuff that he has no control over. tibor just has a very rough way of putting things because he likes to see you guys flip out.

haw is going to be punished...but off the team??? let's look at the following misdeeds:

citation for possession
DUI
getting into a fight (Marlin Jackson, et. al.)
choking a QB when he is lying on the ground defenseless (probably the most disgusting act I have ever witnessed on the football field...it's amazing that we didn't get more heavily attacked on that one)

and the type of punishments that the guilty parties receive, whether it's at OSU or another school, is usually seldom more than a few games. usually it's just one game. i'm not saying that this is right or wrong...just giving you some examples to chew on.

espn is not going to make a big deal about this, although miami fans and the like will have some fun and use this as more ammo. espn was interested in exposing a "corrupt" program...that's big news. a backup RB getting cited for possession? there will be a small blurb, and that's it. it's not like they can accuse tressel of arranging for bushels of weed to be delivered to haw by his crafty brother, Dick (or can they? :sneaky:)
