tOSU Indiscretions of May (Mega Merge)

Man... fellow Buckeyes... feel free to take away all my Gems, but I am just plain old sick and tired of this shit. It is hard being a Buckeye fan anymore. Even if they do some really great things everyone can point back to all the shit. God damn it is like I want to give up on being a fan, but I know that can never happend.

Just another kick in da nutz!!!!
I still really respect Tressel, but for blessed sake make some freaking changes!!!!

I've done some stupid stuff in my times and Im all about second chances, lord knows I've had a few, but why can't these kids realize the opportunity they've been given. I would eat poo to sit on the bench for Tressel. I hope everything works out.

Really no reason to cut him loose! But, he has screwed up a HUGE opportunity to jump start his football career! He'll be in the "Doghouse" for a while and with the talent coming in it could be mighty tough to get back in the running for playing time! Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!

Here's how the story looks on SI.com (I bolded the 1 paragraph):

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2005/football/ncaa/05/19/osu.haw.ap/index.html

OSU's Haw caught with marijuana
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Ohio State running back Erik Haw was cited by police with possessing marijuana, the second time in about a week that a player on the team has been accused of a drug offense.

Haw, who is competing to be Ohio State's starting tailback this fall, was spotted Wednesday by a university police officer holding a marijuana cigarette while standing outside a dormitory, Assistant Police Chief Rick Amweg said.

He dropped the cigarette from his left hand as the officer approached, Amweg said Thursday. Two others standing with Haw walked away before the officer could question them, he said.

Kicker Jonathan Skeete was arrested May 11 on a warrant for trafficking marijuana and was suspended from the team indefinitely. He was later released from jail on $10,000 bond.

Coach Jim Tressel, who is attending a Big Ten conference meeting in Chicago, issued a statement saying he is disappointed by Haw's citation.

"As soon as I get back to town and learn all the details, we will deal with it in an appropriate manner," Tressel said.

Ohio State will require him to enter a drug education program and undergo frequent testing. He is scheduled to appear May 27 in Franklin County Municipal Court.

Calls to the campus phone number under Haw's name went unanswered Thursday.

Haw, a redshirt freshman from Columbus, is a former Division II high school offensive player of the year. He and sophomore tailback Antonio Pittman are battling for the starting job.

In last month's Scarlet-Gray scrimmage, Pittman ran for 57 yards on 14 carries for the Gray team, while Haw scored the Scarlet's only touchdown on a 10-yard run in the fourth quarter. Haw also rushed 16 times for a game-high 86 yards.

What a fucking idiot. First we get the news that Lenix can't qualify academically and now this. Great. Just great. I guess our running backs will be Pittman and Wells. Is there a weaker running corps in the Big Ten?

well, i suppose this is one way to end a rb controversy...

my proposition for punishment. sit at home for 2 games, 2 games no dress, and 3 games with no chance to start. this keeps him from starting for essentially the season but shouldn't limit his ability to grow with the team if palying football is truely what he wants to do.

this kid clearly has a priority problem. i think tressel needs to show these kids there are only two roads one can choose. road #1. you live by the rules 100% and you have a shot at donning the scarlet and gray as well as a shot at the nfl. road #2. you do whatever you want, but you won't be doing it on the team.

i think that those of us who want him off the team, are only saying so because he's a backup RB. what would you guys be saying if teddy or santonio or hawk, any one of our star players, was caught for a similar misdeed? i highly doubt you guys would want them kicked off the team.
thats a pretty stupid statement to make.

Well maybe the kid just wanted to have his own reality show??? (aka Outside the lines)..... Seriously if he wants to get on ESPN he could just maybe kick ass on the field???? Unbelieveable......

I hope this dont' continue because I really don't want to see coach Tressel go because there are only so many times a coach can get away with stuff.... even if its not his fault.

Don't these kids see that they could very well cost this man his job in the long run?

First off Lenix will grayshirt which will probably qualify him academicly for 2006 or 2007 if he redshirts after that (hope I got that right, but the point is...) we are probably better off that way considering the depth we have at LB this year (that is his position).

Oh and by the way pittman and wells aren't that bad... pittman in my opinion looked the best of any of our RB's on the field last year as a true freshman. Add him running behind a much improved offensive line with recieving threats on offense and this could be a fairly potent running attack.

So in short, yes the loss of haw will hurt, but its not the end of the buckeye football program like some people are acting like it is.

I disagree. People who are calling for serious measures aren't doing so because his role on the team is relatively unimportant. We may have only three scholarship tailbacks this season. And as much potential as I think Maurice Wells may exhibit (a lot), he'll be starting the season with just a couple months in the program under his belt. The point being, Erik Haw, whether he would have been the starter or the #2 guy (and I would imagine it's a done deal now that he's not the starter, if it wasn't already) had an extremely important role on this team.

Alan and others are probably right that this transgression, serious as it is, doesn't merit the boot. But at the same time, players on this team are going to have to be confronted with a demonstrated fact that dire consequences will result if they cross the line and damage their team.

Without reading the Ohio Revised Code I am pretty certain that there is nothing in there anywhere that says the punishment for a crime is more severe if it follows the commission of the same or a similar crime by a family member. Nor are there laws stating you will serve more time if you work for an organization that employs a lot of people who do time. That all makes sense to me.

The crime is the crime and the penalty is the penalty. I just don't buy this stuff about drawing lines and making examples.

If JT wants to stiffen the penalties call the team together and tell them the new rules - maybe he has already done that. If not, this is two games max.

On the other hand, Gene Smith might be meeting with one of his employees in the near term and talking about expectations as well. JT seems like a more appropriate target for some of the anger being expressed right now than Eric Haw.

I am not saying Haw is not responible for his actions - only that he is not responsible for the actions of Skeete, Trapasso, Arden, Pitcock, etc. To do this so close to what happened to Skeete is remarkably stupid, but if we penalize players for being stupid we will have trouble fielding a team (GPAs not withstanding).

Personally I believe that much of what we are seeing has as much to do with what becomes public than an underlying change in norms. Under Cooper the rumors of drug use were frightening - but it rarely got past rumors (can someone with a better memory than I recall what punishment Rambo served for his possession bust?). Under Woody these charges would have gone straight from the cops to the coach without any police report filed.

Not saying any of that was right, only that if you are trying to compare OSU to other programs the process by which this stuff becomes public needs to be considered.

Is there a weaker running corps in the Big Ten?

Do I sense a longing for the days of Ross and Hall?
