tOSU Baseball Coaching Search - Greg Beals has been named

Definitely warming up to Beals. I'd say I'm unsure about Beals because I know little about him. I like what I have been reading about him and I am very excited to see what he can do. Next year is going to be rough with all we are losing. Hopefully he can get to work on 2011 recruiting after he gets his staff put together.

Be careful what you buy from this guy. The quote from an old MAC rival - " could sell beachfront property in Arizona" is an accurate one.

Ex. - his presser said it was hard to tell his old players because he promotes such a "family" atmosphere and gets entrenched with his guys. He sent a mass text message telling them he was leaving for OSU. Unless that was on a tiny phone that couldn't have been too difficult.

Many contradictions with this man to what he says.

I trust that the braintrust at OSU did their due diligence in the vetting process.

Guys want to get to the majors and Beals has a good history of doing so.

Well that could be but only because base is the easiest for reporters to find and thus report. Often the additional monies are hidden in %s or simply buried in salaried data. The article re Maloney is one of the most explicit you will see --not only breaking out base from additional but giving 1st year vs 5th year.

I was always under the impression that base salary is number that was most widely reported.

So if he is making $250,000 and supposedly that is $100,000 less than what Todd made. Ohio State paid Todd $350,000 for what he brought to the University. I don't care if that is base + that was way too much. He should never have been paid more than one of our assistant football coaches for what he did:!

I believe BT made 330K when he retired. Too much? Many people would say no. They look at grad. rate, gpa of team (over 3.0), players that rep. the university well, trouble free roster -- in addition to on field success (so what if it's not against great teams). Those points plus HOF honor seem to support his salary.

Thank goodness you did not bring up Big 10 championships or NCAA appearances because he certainly was lacking in that area. I guess if you look around the country you don't find many baseball players getting into trouble and so that statement is poor. Regarding GPA, kudos to the players. In my opinion, he got paid way too much for his effortless recruiting.

Todd has never had a losing season in 27 years as a head coach.
He has never won fewer than 30 games at Ohio State and he has won at least 40 11 times, including a school-record 52 in 1991 and 50 in 1999.
He is the first and only five-time winner of the Big Ten's Coach of the Year award.
His teams have won seven Big Ten championships and eight Big Ten Tournament titles for 15 combined conference titles.
Every player who has played four years at Ohio State has been a Big Ten or Big Ten Tournament champion.
Seventy-two of his players have signed Major League Baseball contracts, 19 have been named All-America and eight have earned Academic All-America distinction.
The Buckeyes have played in 13 NCAA Regionals under Todd and have hosted two NCAA Super Regionals.

BayBuck -- I guess we know where you stand re his salary. Does seem absurd to argue against those achievements. Unfortunately, for me, the last few years have left a sour taste re BT. Not sure about you but I have sat thru virtually every game. I can't tell you how disappointing it has been to watch other teams -- especially Ohio teams -- roll into Bill Davis -- with players better than many (far too many) on the OSU roster. It would be interesting to hear BT discuss recruiting philosophy, budgets, relationships with HS coaches, etc. To many, toward the end, his recruiting classes were sub par (avg talent, too local) the result of being too comfortable, disinterest, laziness, who knows. Could say more but rather than look back, it's probably time to get behind Grg Beals and the new staff.

I understand where you're coming from, Todd was clearly showing the typical signs of having coached 20-some years with above-average results, and the past few years were clearly not his prime -- but he was a consistently winning Ohio State coach, which I think deserves top-of-the-Big10 pay in any sport. Similar situation to Hellickson in wrestling (a longtime neighbor of Todd's), who had a great overall career but was waning a bit at the end, after which the program got an infusion of energy from Tom Ryan. Here's hoping Greg Beals finds similar success on the diamond!
