tOSU Baseball Coaching Search - Greg Beals has been named

rhgbosu

I aim to misbehave
any thoughts on candidates? Here are mine in no real particular order..

  1. Scott Stricklin of Kent State is probably the early favorite to get the job coach.
  2. Tracy Smith is my #1 realistic option. We can throw some money at him and hope for the best. Smith know his way around Ohio as well as anybody. Indiana will be getting a new stadium in a couple years, so that might help make his decision to stat at IU easier.
  3. Greg Beals of Ball State is a guy i like and may get a look. He is from Springfield, Oh and has done a really nice job at Ball State.
  4. Mike McRae of Canisius..ok..now that's a long shot, but the guy has worked wonders over there. You go from 4 wins to 40 in 3 years you're doing something right.
  5. Rob Cooper at Wright State has done a nice job since coming in from Oral Roberts.
  6. Mike Akoi is another guy i really like..he was an assistant at Ohio U, and has done an amazing job at Boston College.
  7. Some D1 assistant from a power program or some lower level head coach from a power program.
  8. Chris Finwood of WKU aint gunna happen..i dont think
  9. We could sell our souls and take a run at former ASU coach Pat Murphy . I dont know if he and Gene Smith are on speaking terms, but he is one of the best ever. Sadly, his legacy has been tarnished a bit by off field stuff.
  10. Coach Mac at Louisville would be the ultimate score, but he's probably a longer shot than Murphy.
These are just a few guys i know a thing or two about, and make sense to me. I'd love to hear some other suggestions.

I highlighted the guy I think will get it.

Coach Todd has been a tremendous asset at OSU. He is arguably the best baseball coach in their history. That being said, I think he has coasted the last couple of years. Recruiting and the performance of this year's team seem to bear that out. He had a great run and deserves every accolade that comes his way, but it is time for new blood. I hope the Buckeyes make a good hire. A Matta-like coach - one who is proven but can be sold on the "sleeping giant/chance to turn a program into a power" - could net a really good coach from a power program.

OSU baseball can get just about any coach in the nation for the package that Bob Todd had. Don't sell the program short by just looking in our backyard. OSU could lure away some of the best coaches in the nation. Todd makes 3 times the money that some of the top 20 coaches make.

I will agree somewhat with your first statement but to call him the best baseball coach in Ohio State history might be a little bit of a stretch. I think that goes back to Marty Karow who took Ohio State to the College World Series 4 times. Todd for all the accolades he has been given over the years stayed a little bit longer than he should have. With the facilities that Ohio State possesses, he should have been able to bring in better recruits with all due respect to the current Ohio State baseball players. Sometimes you get a little bit lazy when your are at one place too long.

totally agree here. As mentioned above with the Ohio State facilities and a go getem recruiter:osu:should be able to recruit with any Northern school. I think this will be one of Gene Smith's toughest hires because I think he needs to lure someone from a powerhouse school to a Northern school that really wants a winner. I would've taken assistant from a Southern powerhouse before I would take a HC from a Northern school.

That's a good list, and I would add Pat Bangtson of Akron. The players loved him and respected his coaching when he was at OSU.

Greg Cypret is a possible candidate for the job..according to baseball america. i would prefer somebody from outside the program. Like many folks, i want a high energy recruiter who will bring a whole new way of doing things.

An unknown young assistant coach from a power program would be just fine with me, but i just have a feeling we aren't going to go that route.

Any evidence to back up this claim?

I'm just being realistic..i think the chances of us poaching a head coach from a big time program are slim and none.

Yes, almost $400,000 a year!!!!! How many coaches in the top 30 make anything close to that? Unless things have change drastically, the average salary is in the range of $100,000 - $400,000 in the top 30. OSU's current pay structure for head baseball coach is at the top end. There are exceptions Miami $600,000. You can't tell me that a coach making $185,000 will not think twice about doubling their salary in an area with a low cost of living. Also, great coaches like a challenge. Be the first coach that takes a northern school to the World Series consistently. If I were the AD I would go after the best.

Coach Todd made 330K per the Dispatch, and those other numbers you gave appear to be 3-4 years old. Augie Garrido's base salary is 900K and will be a million next year, and numerous other coaches now make more than 600k per year.

We are not going to pay 6-800K for a baseball coach, imo. And based on what i'm reading..none of the college baseball elites appear to be worried that we are going to come in and steal their head coach.. Coach Todd's retirment has barley caused a blip on the national scene..that says a lot, imo. However, The Kent and Ball states of the world should be worried. The only threat we are to the national elite is that we could possibly nab one of their assistant coaches..

I'm not saying there isnt a chance that we wont get a coach from a "top 30' type team, but i think it's unlikely. Those guys appear to make quite a bit more than that 185k you mentioned. Like you said, though..a guy looking for a challenge and not necessarily money is a possibility...

I'd call this guy

RICK REMBIELAK

Quality guy, Coached in Ohio and in the ACC.

I was thinking about him also. Even though his record at Wakeforest wasn't great. I have to think its tough to recruit at school with a tuition of $40,000 a year when you only have 11.7 scholarships

A name I would also mention is current UAB and former Birmingham Southern coach Brian Shoop. He is a graduate of Malone, and Kent state. I believe he won 2 big south Championships while at Birmingham Southern in their short stint in Div I. He also won a National Championship with them on the NAIA level
