Game Thread tOSU at NW'ern, Oct 5, 8 ET, ABC/ESPN/ESPN2

So was Roby hurt when he get exposed by Cal too? He is not playing consistently...he is either making remarkable plays, or giving up the big ones. I was far from sold on this secondary heading into the season and while they have played fairly well, losing Bryant certainly does not help.

I really think NW is every bit as good as Wisky, if not better, and they have much more in their corner (home field, undefeated. Gameday, night game, off a bye week vs. us off Wisconsin, better coach, etc.) than Wisky did. We really didn't beat Cal any more convincingly than NW did either. I think the players will be amped and will be ready to go, but I see this being a challenge either way. If I end up wrong, I will gladly eat crow.

Cal passed 53 times. I don't feel Roby was exposed, but that's my opinion. According to a post on the previous page, NW under Fitz is 1-6 coming off a bye. I watched that Cal NW game, and I was hoping NW would win. It was closer than the tOSU Cal game, imo, by a pretty big amount.

What NW doesn't have going on for them.

1. we out man them badly up front on both sides of the ball.

2. We will have as many fans at the game as them.

3. Braxton wont have any type of rust on him and wont be trying to get around linebackers as good as borland in the open field.

4. Their inexperience in big games in prime time.

5. Their special teams are crap.

6. They having a qb to run and a qb to pass. At tosu we call that braxton miller.

7. They don't have a player outside like abbredarus or a back as dangerous as gordon.

8. Their coach struggles post bye week. Not to mention he's coaching not playing linebacker.

I think Roby is struggling a little bit, but I do think teams are going directly at him with taller and/or more physical receivers as well. When Roby has been able to play his game, he's good to go. He is still tackling well, he's a ball hawk and he'll mostly still be in position 99% of the time. When any team not named FAMU game plans to go directly at someone with a set of plays, they will get a few in at this level, especially if you're good at it like Wisconsin or built that way like Cal.

Northwestern doesn't really have that on the outside as much. They might get a few things, especially in desperation time, but I think Roby will be just fine. The issue I see is who is going to replace Christian Bryant and will that guy be able to perform at near the same level. That will be as important on Saturday as any struggles by Roby, real or perceived.

BTW this game feels a bit easier to me. I think Northwestern hangs until the middle of the 2nd quarter, when the size of Ohio STate's line and backs start to tell. Ohio State should win by 20+....call it Ohio State 44, Northwestern 21.

If he was hurt enough to get exposed like that then wouldn't it behoove the Buckeyes to put in a capable body? Not saying he's replaceable but I'm pretty sure OSU has good enough athletes to not get burned almost every time Abbrederis got called on...
Go back to last years game with Wisky. Roby did a good job against Abbrederis. Our D-line did a good job
with the pass rush then. Stave did not play in that game. And now Wisconsin has a better coach. So, there in lies the difference of Wisky then and Wisky now. That is the way I see it.

It seems as though people are glossing over one very interesting fact:

NW is actually quite bad on defense. Maine outgained them in their last game...a game they led 21-0 before hanging on to win 35-21 (Thanks to 2 INT's for TD's).

They gave up over 50% conversions on 3rd, allowed Maine to complete 62% of their passes, and allowed Maine to outscore the offense 21-7 in the 3rd and 4th quarters combined (The defense had the other 14 points).

Sure, road night games can be tough. But NW doesn't have the offensive line that Wisky has, the RB's that Wisky has, and certainly not a LB that would start for OSU or Wisky.

Also, NW isn't a passing team. Not sure why that has been propagated this past week, because Fitz wants to pound the ball and break big plays. They aren't much of a threat through the air (I know, I know, neither was Wisky. Who won that game, again?)

Some Game Day signs I've seen on a few websites:

My endowment is bigger than yours.

We come to play school (pic of Cardale)

What's March Madness?

Urban wipes back to front.

MY CLASS SCHEDULE HAS A HIGHER SOS THAN OSU

Will this be on the test?

Maybe I am just making excuses for Roby, but I think a lot of the big plays he has given up are just plays where you have to give credit to the other guy. The TD to Abbredaris literally couldn't have been thrown any better. The TD Goff threw to Treggs was a big time throw as well.

I am sure even he would tell you he needs to play better but I think it's overstated by some how badly he's playing.

I haven't re-watched like some posters here have, but Roby was picked on all night Saturday. I do think posters are correct in saying his hip injury slowed him down - but Saturday I felt like he played one of his poorer games in S & G. I don't think he played badly against Cal, either. He should be fine, his play over the last two seasons speaks for itself.

If you watch the highlight videos, Roby makes about 3-4 tackles at the LOS on run plays. Meaning, he was jumping up every time...hence, why I believe Wisky switched it up and started having Aberderanus throw double moves at him. Because Roby was cheating up every play, he bit hard on those fakes. Usually he can get back in position, but if he was slowed at all by the hip, it would explain his inability to recover in time.

And hell, maybe Abracadinkerus is a lot quicker off the line than anyone thinks.
