Game Thread tOSU at Nebraska, Sat October 8, 2011, 8 pm ET, ABC

I'll admit it, I'm at a loss for words. In fact I went searching for some.

I've found "VENT" and "JEER" and "CURSE" - but I'm not convinced that is useful.

OK - found some new words.

Loved the surprising first half.

Detested the 4th quarter collapse.

Worried, very worried by Miller's injury (that doesn't look like something from which he recovers in time to play in Champaign).

Perplexed by the continued absence of Guiton under center.

We have a mystery - and need a solution. The tOSU Physics department should find out what mystery compound Bauserman puts on the ball to get it levitate 10 feet over the heads of his receivers.

New math - my probability estimate on the Buckeyes getting to .500 on the season is moving, in the wrong direction.

The future is the future - we need more and better QB recruits. Not because Miller is bad - far, far from it. But because Miller is one hit away from absent - and a credible back-up and leader in waiting is needed. Not just for this year.

Is it that our recruits at the QB position are down or that we really don't do a good job of developing, preparing and coaching our backups. To me it is the latter. It seems once we settle on who the QB is then the backup is merely a place holder. Of all seasons, knowing from the get go that TP wasn't coming back, you would have thought that the coaching staff would have been more attune to this.

LSU, the No. 1 team in the land, loses their starter and the backup comes in and does a phenomenal job. System, prep, surrounding talent, coaching, I don't know but they got it going on.

Why you post here then b? :oh: :io:

Worried a little by the post-game quotes from coaches. The defense got out-coached, not outplayed, but the real reason we lost control of the game was because we couldn't keep things down on offense. Instead of trying to burn up the clock by making first downs they wasted opportunities with overly conservative play while were ahead, then overly panicky play as they got closer, tied, and then took the lead. I didn't at all feel it was the defense's fault, not when the offense kept giving the ball back to Nebraska and building their team momentum.

I kind of agree that is part of the problem - though I remember the LSU history of it differently. Largely because Lee got a lot of early exposure under center, and was a much higher ranked recruit than our present back-ups. (Sure rankings are not everything - but they are not meaningless either).

Anyway, remember Lee's first foray?

That was in the 2008 season. LSU had lost Perrilloux for various rule-breaking incidents. Kind of similar situation to the present day (for LSU), except in today's case they now have Jefferson back.

Lee was pressed into service - coming in as a #15 ranked QB recruit. He did eventually throw 14 TD passes on the year - and 16 picks, many of them in his early outings. At times he was a pick machine.

Fast forward to today - you have Lee as a 5th year senior, with substantial experience under center. Truly tried and tested as a previous starter.

This does not sound to me like a good parallel to Miller - Bauserman.

It does however speak to the lack of development of a credible back-up.

What we wouldn't give today to have Cardale Jones fully qualified. What we wouldn't give to have Guiton with meaningful game-time experience.

Tresselball was excruciating to watch at times.
Tresselball would have won this game.
run it three times and punt on all of Bauserman's drives and we win.
That's a fact.

I assert that if Ohio State had done that they probably would have a few first downs in there. The running game worked well last night. 41 carries for 243 yards. 5.9 ypc.

I don't know that the statff or Baus ever thought for a second he'd see the field outside of mop up time. I think that years of that thinking may have gotten the team to that point. Sad and wrong as it may be, go back and look at some of the interviews with Baus when it became apparent that he was going to be taking over... You'll see what I mean.
