This was a good win but it was bittersweet for me. As some of you know in past years every time the Bucks scored my dogs received a treat. Two weeks ago we lost one of our dogs, Brutus and now are down to two (Buckeye and Tressel). In the past after a Buckeye TD, I would scream Go Bucks and the dogs would rush over a give me a high five and then they would get a treat. As Williams was scoring the first TD, neither my wife nor I yelled and my wife broke down as we both realized that Brutus was not there to give the “paw five.” Rest In Peace, Brutus…we love you and miss you…

Okay. Thought? Thoughts…

  • Hats off to the varmints. They played hard. Boat rower had a solid game plan. They hung around, but eventually, talent won out. Good show.
  • This offense is explosive, man. EXPLOSIVE. They ran up almost 500 yards while running just 48 plays. And they did that with several weird variables! Thursday night conference road game, rain, QB making his first start (who has played just a handful of snaps and attempted zero passes). That’s impressive.
  • Stroud: Not a good first half, but he sure turned it on in the second. Jitters? Whatever, I’ll take the second half version. 294 yards, 13 ypa and 4 TD…not a bad debut.
  • RB: I’ve never been blown away by Teague. He’s functional…a decent back. But, IMO, Williams and Henderson should be 1a & 1b going forward. Williams runs HARD. Reminds me of El Guapo. Henderson has a gear that not many players have. That screen pass? *chef’s kiss*
  • WR: We need to enjoy Olave and Wilson. Not only are they the best tandem we’ve ever had, they’re gonna end up one of the best in CFB history. They both do everything exceptionally well. Can’t speak much on any one else as Olave and Wilson were just wreaking havoc.
  • OL: Honestly didn’t pay much attention, but seemed to give C.J. ample times and opened some big holes for the RBs.
  • Now for the ugly. I thought Coombs-as-DC deserved something of a pass for last season…weird year and all. I’m trying to not take too much away from the first game on the road on Thursday night in the rain. But, I would have liked to see some signs of encouragement. I didn’t see much.
  • I worry that we’re gonna see a couple of games where the offense isn’t perfect and the defense is just brutal and we drop a couple. Could happen. If it does, we’ll see if Day makes a move…I think he would.
  • Hopefully things get tightened up in the next 10 days before Oregon. Frankly, I don’t know much about them. I know they’re not the spread-n-shred offense they were under Kelly/Helfrich…that’s about it. Hopefully the D rebounds. They had some moments tonight, but also got pantsed a little too often for my liking.
  • Anyway, 1-0. On to the next one.

I mentioned that to Mrs. Sparcboxbuck. Four TDs over 50 yards and the last one close to a 40 yard play. We gave up 27 explosive plays last year and had a defense considered questionable? They gave up 5 TDs on explosive plays in one game.

Is that an indictment on Minny? I don’t think so. I think that it is a reflection of what this offense is capable of doing at will.

Probably repeating what several have said, but hadn't seen buckeyes failing to make so many tackles in a few years. Expected to see more than 1 sack, but then I also expected to see a few holding calls. Guys in the booth sure want to see targeting called more often. Little surprised at how good Minny looked. I guess we'll have to wait until they play more games to assess how good of a team they are.

And a ton of rotation, too. I hope to see the coaches settle on the best back 7 and let them play together to develop some chemistry back there. I appreciate getting some rotation and keeping guys fresh, but it's important to have guys always be on the same page. A single blown coverage can cost you a game.

I hope to see a huge improvement with Sevyn Banks and Cam Brown both available (I hope) next week

But have to agree about Coombs. Even with the missing pieces against a good opponent.. I remain unconvinced

The offense on the other hand… Starting center out… The only thing wrong in the second half is that they scored so fast that our defense was always on the field

On one of Minnesota’s touchdown drives, it was noticeably Cavazos, our #5 CB, missing a tackle on the long run and getting jump balled in the end zone for the TD.

The other thing to consider with the D is that they were on the field for 38+ minutes. The explosive offense is great except that it puts the D right back on the field. Of course....if they'd get a stop on 3rd down every now and again, it might make their lives a little bit easier.

It would be nice on 3rd and 5+ if we’d drop our LBs into zone in front of those slants that always, always kill us. Maybe just sometimes?

Coaches usually say the biggest improvement for a team happens between the 1st and 2nd game. Hopefully this will be true this year for the Ohio State defense, they do have lots of areas that they definitely need to improve upon. Yeah, 1-0 is always better than 0-1.
