tOSU at Minnesota, Thurs. Sep 2nd, 8 ET on Fox

Idk what you are seeing....100% head to head.....we dodged a huge bullet there.

They saw the same thing that @Bestbuck36 and I saw. The receiver wasn’t defenseless. He made a football move after the catch and lowered his shoulder to absorb the hit. Once he lowered his shoulder to protect the ball, he gave up the defenselessness. Was it head to head? Yup. But for the targeting to be called, H2H would require the receiver to not have attempted to protect himself.

I think this will be a big game for the young guys. DBs baptized in a conference game. A lot of DL rotation. Stroud settled down and made the throws he needed to make. He can be really really good if he settles into the role.

1. The OL is great. Minny got pressure with blitzes, but they could not hope to stop the run and Stroud was pressured a few times, but nothing terrible.

2. This offense is a big play waiting to happen. If Olave and Wilson weren't enough, Henderson is probably the fastest and Williams turns 4 yard carries into 10 yards.

3. Minnesota is a solid team. Not sure how good, but they're not Florida International or Rutgers.

4. Defense needs a lot of improvement, but I don't think they're nearly as bad as some on here do. Maybe they are, but I'm not panicked. It's unrealistic to think they weren't going to still have issues. This unit might not be great until game 10, but I do think they have that potential.

Solid win. Some ugly play in the 1st half but I like the adjustments, Stroud has poise in the pocket just needs to adjust on his velocity and timing on some throws. Williams and Henderson are going to be phenomenal. Henderson may be better than JK was for us. I liked the intensity pick up from the DB’s in the 4th quarter. Seemed like defense played soft for most the game. This is actually a pretty young team looking at some key players that may be pivotal this year. Hope Teague can push himself to be in the rotation but I didn’t see that tonight. Can’t wait to see a healthy dose of Sawyer/JTT in the mix on defense later in the year. Props to Minny for s solid effort and damn I hope Mo is gonna be able to play again this year. He is a very good RB! Perfect type of game to start with and come out with a W fortunately. Usually we never see a dog fight game until October/November and right out the gates puts a reality check on everyone. Time to go Duck hunting!

Burke is the epitome of the style of db play this board hates. And there's something to be said for a style that doesn't work if you aren't excellent.

He's just quite a bit more fluid and tactical than some of the others.
well in order to excel in Coombs system you have to be a different kind of DB, like Doran Grant and be able to time that hand reach perfectly. It makes a lot more DBs look like trash though due to the timing required. Watts looks like a big boy back there and physical if he's unleashed to play that way. Banks and Brown need to be in there and let the youngsters spell them more than face the fire so much, imo. Lejond looks really good too at times so the ability and skill is back there which is why so much head scratching.

it wasn’t even H2H … the replay they kept showing from the sidelines made it look like it but the shots from the endzones they only showed ones showed no helmet to helmet … they weren’t close

That shit got annoying after the first time the entire defense did it. Can’t say I’m surprised, they are a product of their cringey, boat rowing coach.
That shit got annoying when they adopted all of these cringey gimmicks their cringey, boat rowing coach does years ago. How the fuck do you willingly adopt boat oars as stickers when he brought that shit from a different school? That's like someone coaching at Boise, moving on to a middle tier P5 team, and bringing the Smurf turf with you.

Even more pathetic is that Minny actually has a history to be proud of.

I didn't love the pass defense down the stretch, but in general, I'm not TOO down on the defense. 203 yards rushing allowed, but it took 50 carries to get there. And one of those was for 56 which means Minny averaged less than 3 yards per carry outside of the long one. Losing Mo for the 4th quarter certainly helped, but even Ibrahim only averaged 3.5 ypc when you take out the long one. And he's a damn good running back. I definitely have some concerns about the pass d, but didn't think they were really terrible either. A couple PI and another 1 or 2 that could have been called. No terribly blown coverages. And Morgan also made some really nice throws into decent coverage. And the D forced 2 turnovers, including scoring a TD, had another TO wiped off the board by a meh penalty. And had two dropped INTs.

I still have concerns about Coombs. The D on Minny's penultimate drive was tissue-paper soft. And some of the same frustrations from last year and from Coombs prior stint here seem to be ongoing. Tackling was not great. Not much pressure from the DL. Some really soft zones and cushions on 3rd and long.

The offense? Pretty poor in the first half. I did not understand Miyan not getting more carries. Stroud was meh at best. But once he settled down? Good lord! I don't know what Day saw Minny was doing but he simply dissected it in the 2nd half. And it wasn't tremendous individual efforts or broken plays. He got guys WIDE open down the field and Stroud just had to get it to them. Which he did. Beautiful.

No gaffes on ST. 43/punt for Mirco in his debut. Ruggles made his kicks. No kickoffs OB and the one that was returned only got back to the 20. Nothing out of the return game, but no muffs or really poor decisions, so that's a win.

Overall:
Offense: B (C- in the first half, A in the second half)
Defense: C
ST: A-

This should excite a lot of Buckeye fans. First game with a young team, on the road and they won by 14. And they're not close to their ceiling.

Offensively, no worries at all. Let everyone play in the first half and decisions were made. This will be a dominant offense and real soon.

Defensively, I’m less confident. When the Bucks play against teams of “similar or close to” talent, there’s concern. Seems that the staff is content on showing their hand and rolling with it. The good coordinators (and that includes Moorhead) are going to pick up on that. There’s a lot of work ahead but that’s the way football is.

Enjoyed the hell out of watching Buckeye football again- the good and the not so good.
