Game Thread tOSU at Indiana - Oct 13, 8 ET, BTN

:(Bottom Line is I've come to expect the offense to keep us in the game and keep scoring because lord knows this defense isn't doing it.

I'm beyond upset at this point (more like drunk as F@#k) at this pace I fear Vrabel and Fickel won't be here next year. This defense is really bad right now and I can't put my finger on what or blame one specific area and what that tells me is COACHING.

it'd be obvious if the defense was flawed on the DL/LB/Secondary level but none of us can put a finger on it. To that I say look no further than the coaching. Sadly enough. :(

The play where there were two personal foul calls.... One on the hit from Johnson=COMPLETE BULLSHIT.

I mean, what the fuck do you want them to do? Take pillows onto the field with them and pillow fight it out? I'm getting a little sick of the "defenseless receiver" bullshit.

Sure the 15 yarder on Hankins was a decent call, but TWO personal fouls in one play?! Come the fuck on.

These refs did everything in their power to keep Indiana in this game.

No, the defense didn't do a whole lot to prevent IU from scoring, but they did enough until the refs decided every call would go IU's way.

Yet another week goes by, and I've seen at least 5-7 plays where players were being held that went uncalled. I don't know if it's this specific officiating crew, but did I miss something? Is Holding not enforced anymore?

I watched three different games today and didn't see a single holding call on a typical down, and its been pretty much that way with the odd one here and there for at least the last two years now. Its like holding isn't called unless its on a big offensive play or a punt/kick return. The official could be right there watching the holding and still it doesn't get called much anymore in any of the games I've watched.

The D has got to take a different direction, and at this point it has to be a mix of talent and coaching. We've got some talent, but what wasn't already coached up (Simon, Williams) doesn't seem to be getting the kind of coaching to give us the kind of performance we expect.

People complain about missed holding calls in every football game. I usually think to myself, "deal with it. Happens all the time."

Today, I felt like one of those complainers after watching this game. I counted at least 13 no holding calls today. I started mid way in the 2nd quarter.

I saw a couple of blatant ones in the line they missed on us too, especially on a couple of those Hyde runs. They haven't called holding for 25 years unless it directly impacts the play in a highly visible way, and even then, it's only about half the time.

I dislike the huge cushion as much as everybody else, but do you really want those guys close to the line? With these LBs and safeties?

There are big deficiencies in personnel right now. That said, the coaching on that side of the ball does need questioned. If you don't have the talent, you can at least get your players to play smart. Lord knows there are plenty of mediocre teams out there that can at least inspire sound, smart football with lesser players. Why isn't that happening here?

Honestly, our linebacking corps and safeties have to be better than at least half the Big Ten (especially considering how [Mark May]ty the BIG is right now). There is no reason we cannot play press coverage without elite talent, when the Purdues and MSUs of the world can. I think press coverage would probably help disguise their flaws more than revealing them. Tough for a receiver to beat you deep when you jam him at the line.

481 yards to Indiana.

Indiana? 49 points?

If ever a win could feel like a loss this one certainly does.

The Big 10 is the new Big East. This Mickey Mouse conference deserves every bit of criticism thrown its way.

Withers and Fick are both co-DC. Maybe they just have fundamentally opposite philosophies and they need to mesh, maybe Withers NFL experience isn't translating to college kids, whatever it is... it must be fixed.

Well we saw how well the 2-headed Galen Hall/Jay Paterno monster worked at PSU on offense...personally I have no idea why any HC would have co-coordinators on either side of the ball...it's just asking for trouble.

To me, it looked the defense just sort of stopped playing there at the end. I didn't see anyone fired up and flying to the ball...just sort of going through the motions...That just can't happen and I'm sure Urban will find a way to correct that crap. These guys aren't great, but they're sure better than what we saw tonight.

What sucks is I love Luke Fickell and what he has done for OSU. There is no way he is back next year. This defense has enough talent to keep opponents to >24 points. We might as well start talkin about who is gonna run our defense because Urban realized (already has said as much) that this is not OSU defense.

The defense was just as bad as the refs. I'll blame the refs JUST AS MUCH as I blame the defense for this shit effort.

Gotta agree with daddy. We give up 49 points to Indiana and its the refs fault? :roll1:

Sorry, but that's taking ref whining to the extreme. We have issues.

Eh. We won. On to the next.

I think everyone agrees on that. Since we aren't in the inbred dickyanking beauty pageant that is the BCS this year, a win is a win is a win, even more than usual. But if we're going to keep winning, shit needs fixed...pronto.

Is it really Fickell though? He's been here for so long and presided, although indirectly, over one of the great periods of OSU defense under Tressel. There are many new additions who maybe just aren't suited to the staff. Again, no names, but something Urban is undoubtedly mulling over.
