"Top Senior" / NFL Lists (Is Troy Smith an NFL QB?)

Part of the concern about shorter QB's is having balls batted. But being able to see over the lineman is also a factor.

But as it has been mentioned before, the linemen are not really that significantly taller in the NFL. If you can perform in college under those conditions, than it will not be that huge of a hurdle when you go pro. Also, as I mentioned before, QB's like Vince Young throwing with the side motion almost forfeits their height advantage.

I think what I am really trying to get at is there is more than one way to be successfull in the NFL, and that different players have different ways of making up for shortcomings that they have, and adjust to the game for them to succeed.

As someone earlier stated, throwing from under center after a three or five step drop is much different than throwing over the line from the shotgun formation.

Agreed. But Peyton Manning takes the majority of his snaps from shotgun, and he has had great success in the NFL. Even though he has a good 4 inches on Smith, it just proves that you don't have to be under center all of the time to run an offense well.

Agree, never said you couldn't be successful from the shotgun but we'd be kidding ourselves if we thought Smtih was in the realm of Peyton Manning.

Obviously, Smith is no Peyton Manning, but I have a feeling with more and more big-time colleges producing stars with the shotgun offense, or even the Dual-Threat QB shotgun offense, it might influence the NFL and start a new wave of offensive systems for many pro teams who draft these players.

We all know Troy's great in the college game but he reminds me of one of all those Nebraska QB's under Osborne and unfortunately none are in the pro's...I think.

But they do win you NC.

Those guys (Tommie Frazier, Scott Frost, Turner Gill) were primarily option QB's, so I don't really think it's a good comparison to Troy Smith, at least for what he did the second half of 2005.

Troys in the same mold, I think Troy would make a great option QB but that's not their style.

Kordell Stewart may have been a better example but it's what you do to defensive schemes that make you dangerous in college.

That was the only point I was trying to make.

grad, at some point last year I remember you suggesting that OSU should use Troy under center more often... that he seemed to have better rhythm.
I will be surprised if Troy goes on the first day next year.
so you think it's a stretch to think Troy could go 3 spots higher than Robinson?

his height may be an issue, but it didn't keep grossman out of the first round so I don't buy that it will keep an improved smith out of the first day.

but what % of mannings snaps come from under center. every team uses the shotgun, but id say 50-50 at most with obvious passing downs in the shotgun and most 1st downs from under center.
