"Top Senior" / NFL Lists (Is Troy Smith an NFL QB?)

Trying to pick, right now, those who will be drafted in the top 10 next year is futile, but no one is retarded for thinking that Troy Smith should be considered right along with Brady Quinn.

Let's put it this way, I'd be damn shocked to see Smith get picked over Quinn. Quinn plays in a pro system, and has great size. Smith is a remarkable college QB, but I doubt that he'll do much in the NFL as a QB. Look at Josh Harris from BGSU, he was awesome in college......about the same height, and now he's struggling to make a roster.

IMO Troy will be lucky to be drafted on the first day. He isn't as big or as quick as Vince Young and is much slower than a Mike Vick as well. I just don't think his game is going to transfer well to the NFL.

Size wise, he isn't a prototypical pro QB. That will affect him in the draft.

Neither are half the guys in the league.

Drew Brees-6'0" 209 lbs.
Jake Delhomme-6'2" 215 lbs.
Brett Favre-6'2" 222 lbs.
Jeff Garcia(he used to be good)-6'1" 200 lbs.
Rex Grossman(not the greatest but still a starter)-6'1" 218 lbs.
Donovan McNabb-6'2" 240 lbs.
Steve McNair-6'2" 230 lbs.
Michael Vick-6'0" 215 lbs.
Kurt Warner-6'2" 219 lbs.

There are plenty of guys who aren't 6'5" but still having long careers.

OSU tried to use Troy at other positions and he never did much with it, and wasn't a very good KR when they put him back there. If he does have a future in the NFL it will be at QB because he isn't fast enough to play another position like WR or RB.

...and a lot of those guys were relatively low draft picks because they aren't "prototypical".

To be fair, the staff made it a priority to get Troy on the field in 2003 simply because he was doing so well in practice. I don't know how much you can judge him on less than 10 returns.

Mike Robinson ran alot from QB, and had a 500 yard season at WR, but was drafted at RB, where he has no more experience than Smith would. McNeal has played nothing but QB. Brad Smith hasn't played any receiver. Even if it is at a different position, I believe Troy will hear his name called next April. Hopefully he does show enough to get a shot at QB.

From last April:

I cannot believe when I look back at how ridiculous the media love affair was with Iowa last year at this time. Chad Greenway the #3 prospect overall? PLEASE. That guy was lucky he was taken at #18, and I will guarantee you that 5 years from now Vikes' fans will be cursing their management for choosing Greenway when Carp was still on the board.

Brees was a second round pick.

Brees & Grossman would have likely have been top 10 picks if they were taller (and if they had stronger arms).

Delhomme, Garcia & Warner were not drafted at all.

Garcia and Warner also went to small colleges. I don't know about Delhomme. I guess my point is if Troy doesn't succeed, it won't be because of his size.

First, Carp was overshadowed by Hawk, plain and simple. Greenway suffered a major knee injury in the spring of 2002 yet still played most of 2002, and came back to win the starting job in 2003. He's a three year starter, while Carp has half that starting experience plus a Jackie Chan-like history of leg injuries -- either two or three in high school when he was at LHS, plus the ankle injury during the Michigan game.

Coming off that injury, Carp should feel blessed to still be picked in the 1st round.

I'm not saying it's right; I think Carp is the better player of the two, but I can't fault an NFL GM for picking Greenway, who started darn near 40 games.

Couple of points

1-Iowa played more of a traditional 4-3 defense the last few years, where Greenway was expected to drop into coverage, make tackles-ordinary responsibilities. Carpenter played at the "viper"- DE/OLB combo spot where he might be rushing the passer one down or dropping back in zone coverage the next-aside from sacks, I would not expect him to have comparable/better stats than Greenway. This experience, however, makes him a perfect fit for a 3-4 like Dallas runs, whereas Greenway is a better fir for a 4-3-less pass rush responsibilities, linemen make more plays-like the Vikings run. One of ESPN's announcers said yesterday that Bobby Carpenter to Dallas was perhaps the safest pick in the entire draft-Parcells coached his dad and has known Bobby since he was knee high, Carpenter is an intense team player who will respond to Parcells styles, and is also playing opposite DeMarcus Ware, lessening any chance of double teams. Dallas' D will be wreaking some serious havoc this fall.

2-Troy Smith is just beginning to show what he is capable of. If he has an entire season like the last 4 or 5 games of last year-making the reads AND running only when necessary-he will be a mid-first rounder. Troy has an absolute rocket for an arm-5x stronger than either Leinart or Young. Troy can play himself into the 1st, but I'm not sure if he is really Top 10 material.
