"Top Senior" / NFL Lists (Is Troy Smith an NFL QB?)

Troy Smith and Steve Young

I think the only QB that I've seen that resembes Troy Smith is Steve Young.

Troy's stats will probably never match Steve's college stats. But the BYU offense is and was completely different. Both Troy and Steve have incredible intangible leadership qualities. Both have amazing athleticism and could run and pass incredibly well.

Troy's not there yet, but Steve Young is the mark for which he should aim. He's certainly capable of it.

Steve Young's Stats
6'2" and 215 lbs.
College Highlights

Young's senior season 1983 was spectacular. He passed for 3,902 yards and 33 touchdowns in the regular season, and his 71.3% completion percentage set an NCAA single-season record. He also contributed 544 rushing yards on the ground. With Young at quarterback, BYU set an NCAA record by averaging 584.2 yards of total offense per game, with 311.8 of those yards coming from Young's passing and rushing. The Cougars finished the year with an impressive 11-1 record; Young was named First Team All-American and finished second in voting for the Heisman Trophy (behind Nebraska running back Mike Rozier). Young capped his college career by scoring the game-winning touchdown in BYU's 21-17 victory over Missouri in the 1983 Holiday Bowl.
Young finished his 3 seasons with 592 pass completions for 7,733 yards and 56 touchdowns, along with 1,048 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns on the ground. In 2001, he was enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame.

1983 - First team All-American
1983 - Finished 2nd in Heisman voting
1983 - Won O'Brien Award
1983 - Led nation in passer rating
1982 - Ranked #6 in the nation in passer rating

who cares about the top 10 senior prospects for the nfl draft. lets talk about the top ten seniors who will make the biggest impact in a football game. Troy could very well be the number one player in the country in that department with ted ginn right up there

it is not the topic that bothers me. i think these list are interesting. but the point i was trying to make is, is that everyone is making a big deal about Smith not having a spot on the list.

some people are saying well, he will not be good in the nfl, and he will not be a top prospect right now. who cares about how he will do in the nfl right now! i dont care if "ESPN" says Quinn we be the #1 pick. "ESPN" does not like tOSU and they never will. that is way they hardly ever pick tOSU to win anything.

This topic is a good on, but i think the nfl prospect part shuold not matter right now.

Zed's dead, baby... Zed's dead.

With so many victims in this world, who is really pushing the buttons?

Good comparison, Bojangles. I think that if Smith continues to work on and develop his game, he could become the same type of player that Steve Young was.

Aside from Troy Smith's great talent, I love the intangibles that he has. Like some guys have already mentioned, TS has the knack to deliver the win in the big game, and a lot of times that is the most important thing and is what ultimately wins championships. Look at Tom Brady. Different type of QB than Smith, but when the game comes down to the wire, both will get the job done.

Prototypical size has it's benefits, of course, but Emmit Smith wasn't the biggest back in the world, neither was Barry Sanders. I know the QB pos. isn't the same as RB, those are just the first two "undersized" players I could think of...

Smith has been playing ball at his size for a long time, and he's a gamer regardless.. Hell, even Doug Flutie was given a shot - albeit well after he "proved himself" in Canada.

1983 - Finished 2nd in Heisman voting

A couple of interesting thing come to mind. I think Steve Young was great, and have mentioned that he's the closest comparison for Vince Young that I can think of. But how about this comparison of Steve Young to Peyton Manning (not obvious on the field):

1983 - Steve Young finished second in the Heisman
1984 - BYU won the National Championship without him

1997 - Peyton Manning finished second in the Heisman
1998 - Tennessee won the National Championship without him

I think I could deal with Troy Smith finishing second in the Heisman this year (although hopefully not to Brady Quinn) if it's followed by the NC in 2007. :wink2:

OK, I'll buy that. In fact, I think that's more realistic than Troy winning the Heisman. It takes such gaudy numbers to win the Heisman.

Last night, I was going through Mili's clips for the year. Man, did we have some great games! Santonio Holmes...Teddy Ginn...Troy Smith...AJ...Pitt. Wow. Those Minnesota and Illinois games, for example.
