Game Thread Toledo at tOSU, Sept. 10, Noon ET, BTN

Some of you need to calm down about Braxton. He's a freshman. Joe still needs game experience. Trust the coaches.

normally I'd agree, but when you watch a QB who couldn't drive the offense down the field against Toledo outside of the first drive, something had to change for anything just a change a pace, not seeing Braxton for just 1 drive is pretty baffling to me, especially when the coaches said all week he'd get playing time in first half

10 Thoughts...

1) that type of offense shows future opponents nothing...Troy gave us fits a few years ago, Toledo did today. It is an offense that negates your second level and forces you into man/man free/under coverage. Subs are very limited. LB/DL still has to respect zone/zone read before anything. It is a constant pressure offense that exposes single matchups. tOSU may be better 11v11...but there are spots where 1v1 Toledo had the advantage or were at least even. Their staff did a great job exposing those advantages as much as possible.

2) Anyone who ever dismissed Boom Herron should apologize. He is a downhill, reliable back with above average vision. tOSU misses him right now.

3) Punt team. Ugh. JT Moore will not have a memorable moment in the film session. That was a major point in this game.

4) DClarke and Roby are for real.

5) Tyler Moeller is a fan favorite (me included), but he has not been the Taz we are used to seeing.

6) QB: right now...tOSU is using a game manager, not a game changer. Pick your poison folks. Choose wisely...

7) Credit Toledo's DL and D staff...they put the game on JoeB. It almost worked out for them.

8) 1st look...the new LBs need plenty of work. We are used to stellar tackling, angles, and presence...that was inconsistent today.

9) Drew Basil...step up or step aside. That job has to be up for grabs based on what we've seen.

10) The suspensions and the effect on depth are more than obvious. The young talent is there but the mistakes are also.

Eh, Dunno if it would have mattered. Mostly on the last couple drives, Simon was just destroying everything in his path to get to the QB... a shovel pass might have just accidentally been in his debris field.
Never saw the plays, so you're likely right. What I did not add was that using it a few times also tended to slow the pass rush at times to at least check on the "whiffed" blocker back to make sure he was not a released receiver.

Glad Simon had the heart of a warrior.

I feel ya. In this case, the blockers weren't whiffing.

Agree...the lack of productivity at the Star position definitely hurt us today..especially with the inexperience at LB. Tyler was somewhat invisible last week as well.

Was disappointed with Storm Klein today...he constantly was over pursuing and out of position. Just goes to show how young we are back there and how much room there is for improvement.

If Roby beat Dominic Clarke out for the other CB slot he must have had one helluva camp cuz Clarke has been lights out the last two weeks!

As erratic as Bauserman is throwing the ball at least he's done a good job of not turning it over. Even the passes he's been missing on haven't been "shoulda been picked" misses.

One of the few positives today...

Well, the opposing view is that football is a game of risks and you have to be willing to take some risks. Overthrown deep balls and the unwillingness to attempt to try to stick it in there once in a while. It just looked like he was over thinking and holding onto the ball too long instead of trusting the plays. Our receivers were open on many occasions and there were at least 3 under throws on balls that could have been touchdowns. If you throw late the defense will catch up.

I like him but you have to play to win the game. If our QB is going to play to avoid losing we're going to lose some games. JMHO.

I thought Storm had a pick.

1. Last week JB was the starter and Brax was 1A. Nothing from last week changed that. If anything, JB exceeded expectations, Brax met them.
2. JB was "flawless" in that first drive. If he {AND the rest of the team!} are as flawless for the first quarter, We see Miller in the 2nd quarter.
... they weren't flawless, so we didn't see Miller.
3. Decision time: A blocked punt and some uninspired defense puts us in a dogfight. Do I want an untested freshman (it WAS Akron), or a somewhat
tested 5th year senior with his last shot? I believe, in hindsight, this is the only time Fickel had to make this decision ... in the second quarter, down
15-7.
4. Could the halftime score of 21-15 been better if he makes the change? Maybe. But it could have also been worse, or the same. Decision
validated.
5. Only 2 ways Miller sees time in the second half: A. Baus self-destructs and turns the ball over; or B. the offense explodes to a 3 score lead and
the D shuts down the rockets. Neither case occurred.
Conclusion: JoeB played well enough to win against an inspired, talented Toledo football team. Give him his due. Braxton will have his day soon
enough. New coach, lots of freshmen playing ... made some mistakes against a good team and still won. I'll take it.

Just win baby!

This is why I'm not clamoring for Miller just yet. That pass last week for a TD he had should of been picked. As bad as Bauserman looked today, he didn't cost us the game. So far he's been making good decisions and has been a good game manager. If anything I'm angry that the o-line pretty much erased any goodwill from last game.

I just hope it was a lack of focus today that made us look as bad as we looked.
