The Walking Dead (Official Thread)

Some good things happen in Alexandria...from a storyline/entertainment perspective. It's going to be a roller coaster if they do it right...if they fuck up the story or the characters that are coming up, then there is no hope for the rest of this show.

So much this.

There is SO much potential to be had with the storylines from the comics with this group. You can dip into the same pool with an entirely different perspective because the group is so much different in the show than it is in the comics at this point in the arc. The thing that worries me the most is how much they rush it. One of the things that I loved about the comic's transition from man v world to man v man was that it was done with a lot of deliberate transition. There were symbolic changes of character that I sure hope they don't skimp on exploring in the show for the sake of "action".

There are so many people, including a handful in this thread, that seem to think that this show is supposed to be action packed adventure all the time. I don't understand that. It's as much a drama as other primetime shows like Breaking Bad or GoT, just in a different setting. I think the showrunners have taken a lot of flak for the episodes that centered on character development this season and it's probably my favorite part of the show.

It has nothing to do with "action". It's that the episodes that could have been used to mine great character development were instead used to save money and stall. I have zero problem with entire episodes without zombies. Unless, that is, the zombies are the deepest characters in the show...as well as the smartest, apparently.

Thought it was a really strong episode tonight.

I loved how Carole suddenly made herself look weak and reverted back to a timid type persona to fool the Alexandrians

Some solid human conflict between Glenn and Deanna's son. Possibly between the haircut lady's husband and Rick.

What's up with the other outsider chick jumping the walls? Spy for an outside group?

Who took Ricks gun?

Darryl is not digging the suburban lifestyle.

I loved how Carole suddenly made herself look weak and reverted back to a timid type persona to fool the Alexandrians. I hadn't thought about that, but I also had to pause several times to help with the kids. At first I was thinking Carol was just embracing the community, but she did mention to Daryl that he should keep up appearances. There's also the fact she commented that she missed Ed dearly and other BS, which was all clearly a lie. Makes sense as "Den Mother" that she would want to play the part of community outreach so she could get to know everyone in Alexandria and flesh out any potential problems.

Some solid human conflict between Glenn and Deanna's son. Possibly between the haircut lady's husband and Rick. Cage match between Rick and Jessie's husband will headline next Sunday night's PPV. As far as Aiden and Glenn, that was a bit interesting as in the comics I seem to remember Glenn falling in pretty easily with the supply runners, and they weren't quite as inept as the Monroe boys were in the episode.

What's up with the other outsider chick jumping the walls? Spy for an outside group? No clue, she's something the writers cooked up if I recall. I expect her story will be fantastically awful based on all the original material they've cooked up in the past.

Who took Ricks gun? On the Wiki, and just like the comic, it's a woman named Olivia. She's in charge of weapons/inventory, runs the storage of sorts. They never really discussed her much in the comics either, so not much to say.

Darryl is not digging the suburban lifestyle. If possum hunting and skinning isn't civilized surburbia is wrong, I don't want to be right. I don't see Alexandria going well for Daryl. Maybe he decides to live outside the walls, but stay close to the group...scout of sorts?

Comments in bold above. My biggest question coming away from the episode was...who took Rick's gun? Was it the teen girl, Enid? Was it someone else spying on Rick's group as they were entering the town?

Yeah, I mean it was a setup episode, which I imagine they all will be (the next 3) until the finale, where I imagine something of note will happen and leave with another "cliffhanger", though hopefully better than last year. The dramatic tension buildup was good, and I don't mind it at all...but the end result will be in the payoff, and we will have to wait to see on that. They have rushed and/or fucked up so many of these before (the Hunters, the Governor's disastrous second invasion) that my hopes are not high...but the buildup so far is good. There is kind of a funny Millennial generation/"real world" clash undertone to this conflict that I find amusing, especially considering Deanna's son is arrogant as fuck despite being a complete toolshed.

I imagine the outsider girl works for the villains, wherever they are...I also anticipate she will take a liking to Carl and become "conflicted" about her role and allegiance. Rick's gun is an interesting one, though I imagine it could have been the girl, since she could have been there watching him put it there since Carl ended up there after chasing her.

I see Darryl leaving out on his own, at least for a while...will he be the one who discovers the villains?

Haircut lady's husband seems like he might be like Carol's old husband...that could be interesting.

I'm inclined to believe that the Buckeye is on the up and up, but can only assume that her husband was from Michigan or Pennsylvania given that her son is a giant douche. Seems like the type that would get pissed by how much his mom is siding with Rick and off her to try to take control.

Was it just me or did haircut girl totally forget to mention that she had a husband when she was talking about family? Maybe it's just because I assume everyone has lost their spouse by this point. Really seemed like she wanted Rick's nuts.

I agree that Rick's gun ended up with the girl or the people she was visiting. Since they already did the town gone bad story with the Governor I think this one will be an attack from the outside, which is probably why they were trying to beef up their numbers with people that have been in the shit.

I agree, I think character development is essential to the drama aspect of the show, but I think part of the problem is there are just too many damn characters on the show currently, there needs to be a culling. If you look at the characters that are currently in Rick's group, Daryl was never part of the comics, as well as Sasha, Tara, Judith (To an extent), and Noah. In conjunction, Carol was dead by Alexandria if I recall, Beth didn't make it off the farm I think, and Tyreese was dead at the end of the prison, not outside Alexandria. There's 15 people in Rick's group that they have to provide character development for, while in the comics nearly half of those members didn't exist or didn't make it (Although a couple extra people did make it that died in the TV show). I think that's just too many characters to provide adequate TV time for, at least not meaningful TV time. That's probably why so many episodes the last two seasons have focused on subsets of the group, like when they were split up in season 4, and much of this season. Not to mention it's hard to provide any sense of struggle with walkers when you have a group of 14 able bodied adults with serious firepower.

Long story short, if they cut out some of the characters maybe they can do some meaningful character development without tying up the show so much. I think the unfortunate thing is they've introduced and built up a number of characters, but so many of them bring nothing to the group. A number of them I take no interest in, partially because there's so little screen time for them, but at the same time their part is mostly meaningless. Tara is one of those people, although I do enjoy any scenes with her bouncing all over the place. Noah doesn't really bring anything to the group, I get the feeling he's going to be zombie fodder sooner than later. If Rick's group is the focus, they really need to pare down to 7-9 actors I think for better TV.

A new wrinkle occurred to me as I watched the episode again. When Rick and Carl were fending off Walkers after Rick discovered his gun had been stolen, a Walker came out from underneath a tarp or something pretty close to where the gun had been hidden. Is it possible someone was able to "plant" a Walker close to where he would have been looking for his hidden gun?

Certainly wasn't any of the inept asshats at Alexandria...could have been bad guys, I guess, but you'd have to go full Tyreese to get killed in that situation, however.
