Tressel, Smith too good for rematch

Tressel, Smith too good for rematch

Bob McClellan
Rivals.com College Football Columnist

Second-ranked Michigan played well, at least offensively.
But there is no reason for a rematch. That talk must stop.
The Wolverines could play No. 1 Ohio State 10 more times, and with all due respect, they'd go 0-10. Best-case scenario, 1-9.
I understand that might be hard for the Maize and Blue to swallow. So get a big glass of water to help it down, because it's true.
The Buckeyes (12-0) are the best team in the country. No matter which team you're a fan of, your team won't beat Ohio State either. Want to know why?

Two reasons: You don't have their coach, and you don't have their quarterback.

Yes, it's that simple. Jim Tressel wins big games. His game plans are impeccable, and he's simply the best play-caller in college football.
It doesn't hurt that the best player in the game is his quarterback. Troy Smith gave the OK for the engraver to get started on adding his name to the Heisman Trophy. Not that the T-r-o shouldn't have been on there already.
Ohio State racked up 503 total yards en route to ending Michigan's dream with a 42-39 victory in Columbus. The vaunted Wolverines defense was almost nowhere to be found. The Buckeyes passed for 316 yards and - more importantly - rushed for 187.
Let that sink in, Michigan fans. One-hundred-and-eighty-seven. The Wolverines defense had given up only 220 rushing yards in Big Ten games all season. It was yielding less than 30 yards per game on the ground.
Ohio State had more than twice that by halftime, including 52 on a touchdown right up the gut by true freshman Chris Wells. Clearly, Tressel saw something no one else had seen against Michigan. A nearly identical play worked for another long touchdown when Antonio Pittman ripped off a 56-yarder in the third quarter.

The Buckeyes defense didn't hold up too well, but no matter. This team is about Tressel, Smith and an array of weapons that strike fear in the hearts of opposing defensive coordinators because they can strike at any time.
First, there was Smith. He went 9-for-11 for 69 yards and a touchdown the first time Ohio State got its hands on the ball. He hit six different receivers, including a 27-yard completion to little-used senior wide receiver Roy Hall. Hall caught three balls on the drive, including a 2-yard touchdown; he had 10 catches all season entering the game.
Then there was Wells, whose 52-yarder was a thing of beauty. He made a twist near the line of scrimmage and burst out of a tackle, then showed excellent speed as he outraced the Michigan secondary to the end zone.
Smith burned Michigan with more of his maneuverability and rocket arm, hitting Brian Robiskie for 40 yards after spinning out of the pocket and away from trouble. Two plays later Smith found Ted Ginn Jr. after a nice play fake, and the result was a 39-yard touchdown. Ohio State had covered 91 yards in just four plays for a 21-7 lead midway through the second quarter.
The Wolverines hung around offensively, mostly because Mike Hart played like there should be an "e" in his last name. Ron English, who has done a terrific job in his first season as a defensive coordinator, simply could not come up with answers. Michigan tried to play zone, and Smith shredded it. The Wolverines blitzed, and Smith got rid of it quickly.
The same fate awaits Ohio State's next opponent. Play the Buckeyes straight up, or try your gimmicks. Tressel will put Smith in a position to make plays, and Smith will make nearly all of them.

Urban Meyer joins the list of whiny SEC coaches (with Spurrier, Tuberville, etc.)...

Meyer: No rematch in BCS title game

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Florida coach Urban Meyer watched nearly every snap of the Michigan-Ohio State game and heard all the subsequent talk about a rematch.

He was adamant it shouldn't happen.

"I think that'd be unfair to Ohio State and I think it'd be unfair to the country," Meyer said Sunday. "Just don't believe that's the right thing to do. You're going to tell Ohio State they have to go beat the same team twice, which is extremely difficult?"

What if a rematch happens?

"If that does happen, all the (university) presidents need to get together immediately and put together a playoff system," Meyer said. "I mean like now, January or whenever to get that done."

Meyer broke down the top teams in the Bowl Championship Series standings, all the while stating Florida's case for facing the Buckeyes in the national championship game -- assuming the fourth-ranked Gators beat rival Florida State on Saturday and No. 5 Arkansas in the Southeastern Conference title game the following week.

Michigan?

The Wolverines had their shot and didn't even win their conference.

Notre Dame?

The Fighting Irish lost 47-21 at home to Michigan.

Arkansas?

The Razorbacks lost 50-14 at home to Southern Cal to open the season.

USC?

Maybe. But the Trojans lost to unranked Oregon State.

Meyer said the Gators (10-1) -- who dropped one spot in both polls and remained fourth in the BCS following a 62-0 win over Division I-AA Western Carolina -- should have the inside track to play for it all. Florida's lone loss came at then-No. 11 Auburn. The Gators trailed 18-17 early in the fourth quarter and had third-and-3 at the 6-yard line when a questionable call resulted in a momentum-changing fumble. Meyer still believes Chris Leak was attempting to throw when the ball dropped out of his hand.

But officials ruled a fumble, and the Tigers went on to win 27-17.

"We went to a hostile environment, played our hearts out. We were on the 6-yard line and failed to get it done," Meyer said. "So I think when you look at all that, there's two schools out there that probably can go ahead and say, 'OK, we deserve a shot. Here's our schedule. We played a difficult schedule.'

"I think USC and Florida are the two teams that, if they take care of business, deserve a shot."

The Gators probably need to win out and have USC beat Notre Dame next Saturday, which would eliminate the Fighting Irish, then have UCLA upset the Trojans the following week.

Even then, Florida would have to hope to be ahead of Michigan in the BCS standings.

"We've just got to take care of our business. Do I believe that the SEC should be in it? Absolutely," Meyer said. "I would say that if it were up to the 117 Division I-A coaches, certainly it would not be a rematch. But I don't believe it's up to them. So we'll find out."

Meyer also reiterated his desire for a playoff system.

"I do believe as time wears on and you kind of sit back and look, that the only thing justifiable is to do that," he said. "I used to think it would be impossible to do, with all the stadiums, with selling tickets, with how would you do this. I believe there is enough firepower out there now that you could get that done. Don't ask me how to do it because I'm do busy. But I believe there's enough people out there to get that done."

As for this season, Meyer just hopes the BCS avoids a Michigan-Ohio State rematch.

"If I'm Ohio State, I go get a bunch of rings picked out and say we won the national championship," Meyer said. "That's not right. That's not right. I think what happened in 1996 (with Florida getting a rematch against Florida State) was a lot different because you didn't have the BCS. You had simply voting at the end, and that was unique. ... This is a completely different era now."

NO REMATCH PERIOD!

First of all, last nights game was for the RIGHT to go to the championship game. Michigan is DONE, end of story. scUM had opportunities to win the game and they blew it! How many #2 ranked teams do the Bucks have to beat to win this thing? The Buckeyes gave them 10 points off of turnovers, something they had not done all year, and scUM still could not handle the Bucks. The thing that gets me, if there is a rematch, is that the Bucks go into the championship game 12-0, scUm 11-1. If, God above help me, scUM wins, we get only the Big 10 championship and they get the title with identical records? Not right, CANNOT HAPPEN! The Championship game is made for the CHAMPIONS of their conferences, the elite. I don't care if scUM is sad because they weren't men enough to take care of business, they had their chance, and they failed. Even when the Buckeyes opened the door for them and made it interesting. The BCS needs to looks at this scenario and change the ruling on who is eligible to go to the dance. Conference CHAMPIONS only! Hell scUM, don't be ball hogs, be men, admit you lost to the better team. Especially when you had chances to knock off the Bucks. Let some other team dream about beating the Buckeyes. Go to the Rose Bowl and be happy. You had your shot at the title, and you LOST! GO BUCKS!:oh::io:

And to Mr. Hart concerning the OSU defense. I would worry a little bit more about your own. Your defense went to The Tressel school of Coaching Excellence last night. All course studies Marked F for FAILURE. With subsequent marks of M meaning MORON!

It is what it is...

I have said it before and I will say it again, a rematch in my mind does not make sense. Another conferences? top team probably the Pac 10 or SEC should get a shot at us. Unfortunately the best case scenario for a rematch occurred, a close win by OSU at home. Now we just enjoy the victory and play whomever they would like to throw at us.

all playoff bullshit aside, i kind of agree with him... M should NOT get a shot at a rematch... also, side note to Urban: what you witnessed last night WAS a playoff game...

i know it will never happen, but if ever there was a case for a school to just say fuck it, refuse the bowl bid, and just give the kids their NC rings right now, this is it.

edit: i know, i know, it will never happen, for a large number of reasons... like 15 million... among other things...

The irony is amazing. The only team I know of that won an NC because they got a rematch after a season-ending loss is 1996 Florida. So now Florida's coach is whining and campaigning to keep TSUN out of the same thing. He says the BCS is different than what was around in 1996. It's different only in adding the Rose Bowl (and thus the Big-10 and Pac-10) into the mix. In 1996, the BCS would have sent Arizona State to play Florida State, since they were both unbeaten.

Having noted the irony, though, I do agree with him, and think that USC and/or Florida should jump TSUN if they win out. But it seems whiny when it somes from the head coach directly.

It was odd to see Herbie say that a 12-1 Florida team wouldn't deserve the title shot over TSUN. A few weeks ago he was saying that if Florida went undefeated they should jump tOSU for the #1 ranking. I don't think that close conference wins should drop Florida that much.

Who the hell cares who OSU plays. Michigan/ND/USC/Florida/Arkansas Bring it on. My problem with the BCS National Championship Game. We should be National Champions today. If you use the same logic and OSU loses in the title game to a one loss team why should we not share the title? Especially if it is Michigan?? It should only be set up for playoffs. The BCS title game should only happen in the years that a team goes undefeated with strength of schedule calculated in. Without that I believe Michigan has a right in this system to play OSU again.
