The Polls (AP, Coaches, & CFP, etc.)

Actually, it was a reaction to what I saw this weekend and wondering why. Coaches putting all their talent into offense? More running QBs making defenses look bad? Refs calling interference more often? Targeting? Almost always called on a DB. When Alabama has to score 62 to beat ol’ Miss, when Texas and Okie combine for over a hundred points and need four OTs to finish, when Florida blows a twenty point lead... it looks different than past seasons.

Defenders are just exercising good social-distancing practices this year

Question for the Mod Squad? What's traffic like on BP this October compared to years past?

I went back and looked, last year's Week 6 thread was 50 pages. By contrast this year's is now 56 pages. But this is the first week that it's even come close to what was there last year, everything else has been below 30 pages in the weekly thread at best.

FWIW I'm seeing quite a few of the same names as last year. I would expect it'll pick up a tad when the Big Ten truly starts though.

Updated Week 8 college football bowl projections

CFB PLAYOFF SEMIFINAL (SUGAR BOWL)
8932048.jpg

The pick: No. 1 Clemson vs. No. 4 Oregon

With only one Big 12 unbeaten remaining and the likelihood Oklahoma State finishes unbeaten extremely small, we're going with the Pac-12 champion in the No. 4 slot unless Georgia is able to run the table and win the SEC, thus putting the Bulldogs and Crimson Tide in the final four. Oregon has a favorable slate, but the Ducks are going to need to look good beating up on West Coast competition and can't afford to play fewer than seven games.

The pick: No. 2 Ohio State vs. No. 3 Alabama

Will Ohio State, as the unbeaten Big Ten champion, be able to defend the Crimson Tide's gifted group of wide receivers during a semifinal appearance? Hard to say. Alabama's defense came up with a couple crucial takeaways in the second half of this week's win vs. Georgia and that'll need to continue for a defense that hasn't played as well as it could this fall. Too many breakdowns thus far for Nick Saban's liking.

The pick: No. 1 Clemson vs. No. 2 Ohio State

Our title game selection changed last week following a few surprising games inside the Top 10 out of Florida, who lost, and Alabama, who failed to pass its test defensively against Ole Miss. But man, it's admittedly hard picking the Crimson Tide reaching the final after Saturday's impressive 41-24 win over Georgia. This matchup would be a rematch of last season's semifinal classic and one Fields would love to run back.

In reality anything more than a 4 team playoff is a waste of time.

Actually I'd really like to see a 6 team playoff with the five Power 5 Conference Champions (i.e. the playoffs really start with the conference championship games, etc.) and the best school between the independents and Gang of Five Conference Champions. The CFP would pick the 6th school and seed the teams with #1 and #2 getting a first round bye and (possibly) #3 and #4 getting a home game vs #6 and #5 respectively.

I think Georgia being 4 after losing to Alabama by more than ole miss did is worse

Yeah, that's been my issue for years. The loser of a game like Bama vs. UGA drops only 1 slot based off pre-rank alone, not the quality of play during the actual game, while the loser of the OSU vs. PSU game next week will drop 4-5 slots (maybe more) even if it's a well-played, one possession result in the end. Besides one half of football against Bama, UGA has shown me nothing that resembles a team worthy of a top-5 ranking. They have beaten the over-ranked Auburn Tigers and Tenn Vols.

The fact that ND and UNC were both up there last week and ND all the way up to #3 after beating a hapless L'ville team by 5 while only scoring 12 points (I don't care how bad the wind was supposably) this week is just silly.
