College Football Playoff committee announces release dates of weekly rankings

The College Football Playoff selection committee announced Thursday the first CFP rankings will be released on Tuesday, Oct. 30 at 6-7 p.m. central time (7-8 p.m. ET.)

"We've had four very successful seasons and I look forward to a fifth," Rob Mullens, chair of the selection committee and athletic director at the University of Oregon, said in a statement. "We're in good shape heading into this upcoming year."

During the meeting this week, the committee reviewed timing for the weekly announcements of its rankings, reviewed its protocol and finalized its list of members who will be recused from voting or discussions regarding selected teams.

The committee will announce its first of six rankings following the ninth week of the season. The committee will convene in person, on Mondays and Tuesdays.

OHIO STATE RANKED NO. 4 IN AP POLL FOLLOWING 77-31 WIN OVER OREGON STATE

96086_h.jpg

Ohio State is up to No. 4 from No. 5 in the latest AP Poll, jumping Wisconsin after the Buckeyes dismantled Oregon State 77-31.

In front of Ohio State are No. 1 Alabama, No. 2 Clemson and No. 3 Georgia, all three of which played in last season's College Football Playoff. The No. 4 ranking mirrors what the Buckeyes were ranked in the Coaches Poll, which was released earlier on Tuesday afternoon.

Joining Ohio State in the rankings are four other Big Ten Teams, led by Wisconsin at No.5. Behind the Badgers are three other teams who fell in the rankings following lackluster performances in the opening weekend.

Penn State dropped from No. 10 to No. 13 after an overtime close call against Appalachian State, Michigan State dropped from No. 11 to No. 15 after a nail biter against Utah State, and Michigan fell from No. 14 to No. 21 after a loss to Notre Dame.

OHIO STATE FALLS TO NO. 4 IN COACHES POLL AFTER 77-31 WIN OVER OREGON STATE

96080_h.jpg

The Buckeyes began the season as the No. 3 team in the coaches poll, but fell to No. 4 following their 77-31 win over Oregon State.

Ohio State is behind three of last season's college football playoff teams: No. 1 Alabama and No. 2 Clemson and No. 3 Georgia. Though the Buckeyes did receive one first place vote.

It's worth noting the initial voting for the preseason poll that had Ohio State ranked No. 3 was done before Urban Meyer's paid administrative and announced three-game suspension.

Four other Big Ten teams were ranked in the top-25 with Wisconsin as the highest at No. 6, up from No. 7 last week after a 34-3 win over Western Kentucky. Behind the Badgers, the three other ranked Big Ten schools took a tumble in the poll after lackluster performances in the opening week.

Michigan fell from No. 14 to No. 22 after a 24-14 loss to Notre Dame, Penn State dropped from No. 9 to No. 10 after a scare from Appalachian State, and Michigan State fell from No. 12 to No. 13 after a close call against Utah State.

#3 OSU beats a P5 team by 45 points at home (77-31)
#4 UGA beats an FCS team by 45 points at home (45-0)

What do you do? Well drop the B1G team, obviously.

New Poll has UGA #3, OSU #4

I understand the defense gave up some points but you know damn good and well if the roles were reversed it would be "ZOMG!! Offense! 77 points!!" and a furious slurping noise, while OSU's shut out when have been dismissed because of the competition.

Read somewhere that the poll with OSU at 3 came out before The Mess. They may have jumped UGA over OSU for off the field issues more than week 1 performance. OTOH, we’ve seen this shit before from the pollsters.

What's the point of getting bent out of shape about the polls after week 1? Take care of business and get in the playoff simple as that. Heck, a 1 loss tOSU with a B1G championship will make it in the top 4 every year.

I'll take it a step further... I'd rather not have the pressure of being 1-4. 5-7 with a chip on your shoulder seems better. But, like you said it doesn't matter. Especially if we don't take care of business against TCU.

No shape bending, just observing their nonsense

It seems to have started earlier and be more transparent than ever

After last year my own personal standard of success is win The Game and the B1G

Invites to and success in the ESPN Invitational tournament are gravy

From 11W:

AP POLLSTER HAS NO IDEA. For some reason, the Associated Press allows a 69-year-old Boston Red Sox reporter who's been covering baseball full-time for over 40 years to vote in its weekly college football poll.

The results were about as disastrous as you'd expect. Jonny Miller of WBZ radio dropped Ohio State 20 spots in his poll, from No. 5 to No. 25, after the Buckeyes hung 77 points on a Power Five opponent.

To a point, I respect the hell out of it. If I very clearly had no business voting in a weekly college football poll, I would never have the 'nads to stir the pot like that and draw obvious attention to myself. On the other hand, it's garbage like this that makes this poll impossible to take seriously.

I don't think he'll have a vote for long after this, but hey, at least he's going to go down in blazing glory.

Saw that this morning and was going to post it myself.

...And still the media actually wonders why no one takes them and their "expertise" seriously.

good point. i mean, it's not as though bp doesn't already have thousands upon thousands of posts that discuss someone's ap poll ranking. furthermore, something tells me that there have been absurd ap voter rankings ever since the poll was expanded to sports editors in 1936. this isn't some new media-discrediting phenomenon. the difference is that we now have websites that compile and list each voter's poll for easy tracking. go back 20+ years and a poll like jonny miller's would have never been discussed because pretty much no one would know about it. at best, you would have gotten a blurb on page 13 in tuesday's sports section right above max emfinger's ad for the latest recruiting scoop if you call his 1-900 number.

you know what is new? ESPN and their little playoff predictor score that I keep seeing scroll underneath.

They are getting out in front of the narrative of what the polls should look like the next week by completely making up a fucking number about playoff chance. As we have seen, people will generally just go with what they read in the headline so if the ESPN science machine says 3 SEC schools and ND have the best playoff % chance...well it must be true.

not too different than preseason polls, which have been around for how long now?

There probably haven't been many as absurd as a full-time baseball reporter (who likely shouldn't even have a poll vote in the first place) dropping someone 20 spots after beating a P5 opponent by 46 points.
