The Greatest American Rock Band Ever Is...

I tried to think what band was the most influential and it has to be the Ramones.

The Alman Brothers was my favorite band in my youth, they were close.
The Pixies influanced countless US rock bands.
The Other band I would nominate is Grand Funk Railroad. Hell of a band.

Zappas greatist hits are probably his worst stuff. Sheik yerbooty, dancing fool, don't eat the yellow snow are all bull shit. Throw on Shut up and play yer guitar on the stereo and he is a fucking genius. He surrounded himself with some of the best musicians in the world. Terry Bozzio, Adrein Bellew and Lowell George. His crew was phenominal.

Tough question. Was hoping after some of you idiots answered, it would help me make my selections. But as it turns out I'm an idiot too...

So I'll list "Most Important", "Most Talented", and "My Favorites" from the list...

Most Important

The Velvet Underground
The Ramones
Metallica

These 3 are the most important because they were integral in "inventing" a new way of playing and interpreting rock and roll. The "influence" of The Velvet Underground is legendary, for example. Bob Dylan would go here if it were an option.



Most Talented

The Eagles
Fleetwood Mac
The Beach Boys

The first 2 are self explanatory imo. The individual songwriting talent of The Eagles and Fleetwood Mac is off the charts. The 3rd was tougher. Brian Wilson was so incredibly talented I would be as bold as to say that if he would have been free to do what he wanted, he would've been the American Beatles by himself. Yes, he was that much of a musical genius. Tom Petty was just edged out here. Bob Dylan would go here if it were an option.

G n R - because Slash is the coolest rock star ever imo. :p


Depending on how I approached this question, I could make a case for probably 1/3 of this list. It troubles me I couldn't find a place for Aerosmith or Van Halen, so I give them honorable mention in all 3 of my categories.

I voted for my "Most Important" btw.

This is all in my imho, ymmv of course...


PS: I believe Spinal Tap should be on the list. Those accents were fake and they went to 11!!

(hardest part of this isn't picking which band so much as it is "defining" rock n roll. I'd argue that at least half of those bands I don't consider rock.... some pop, some crap, some alt, some metal...etc....)

Have you read Sammy's book "RED"? great insight into his world... not only was he great in VH but he's one of the best solo acts EVER...

Haven't read it with all the time constraints on me, but will someday. I've dug him from his VOA days, when I first got really into music. Some of the Montrose stuff is pretty good too.

There is probably a debate for the next 50 years on Hagar vs Roth in VH, but I'll take Hagar everyday. Roth was great for what he was at that time, just thought Hagar was better, and the music got that much better.

Still waiting to find time to hit Cabo for Sammy's Bday...my bro has been twice and it pisses me off...
