The Greatest American Rock Band (Poll)

The Greatest American Rock Band Ever Is...

I of course voted R.E.M. They've been my favorite American band since 1985. Their influence is massive. Both "Indie Rock" and "College rock" genres can be traced back to R.E.M. Even bands that sound nothing like them, (Nirvana and Pearl Jam) have claimed to be fans and say they were influenced greatly by R.E.M. Critically, you might see the Beach Boys and Velvet Underground in the same league, but R.E.M. stands up very well here as well.

I didn't even see 2-4 on my American favorite list: Nine Inch Nails, Interpol, Alice in Chains. Van Halen, Metallica, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Tool, STP, Queens of the Stone Age and Foo Fighters are all beloved American bands for me as well.

Wrong, his band was The Jimi Hendrix Experience and although he was from Seattle the band was formed in the UK. His drummer and bassist were wankers.

Fine. I just noticed Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band on the list. Same dynamic as Hendrix (except the E Street Band was American) There just has to be some distinction between bands and solo artists or I'd have to change my initial claim from R.E.M. to Bob Dylan.

Tom Petty & The HB without any hesitation. Boys are still rocking after 30+ years without a breakup or blowup. Pretty much been the same guys over the years except Stan leaving and Howie dying.

I also suggest watching the Rockumentary "Running Down a Dream" - 4 hours of just pure awesomeness. Probably the best musical documentary I've ever seen.

I did make an effort to to distinguish acts where it was really just about the front man (Bob Segar & The Silver Bullet Band) apart bands that were just as integral as their most famous member. The E Street band has been hugely influential in and of it's own right, as have The Crickets.

Anything with Sammy Hagar is the greatest, hence my vote for Van Halen!

5150!

(hardest part of this isn't picking which band so much as it is "defining" rock n roll. I'd argue that at least half of those bands I don't consider rock.... some pop, some crap, some alt, some metal...etc....)
