Holy shit. holy freakin shit.

(Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.)

 You can have all of my share of the Van Halen pie for you then.

Hey. Not denying Eddie's guitar chops. Just that I never liked the band. His solo in Micheal Jackson's Beat It was iconic.

My understanding is that he never was compensated for that at the level it deserved (royalties, etc.).

Similar situation with "Jamie's Cryin'" and this song-

Tough call. The definition of "rock and Roll" will kick some out. There are some kick ass bands with one hit wonderish releases - or at least minimal length careers, and some that are extremely influential...if that is part of the "greatest" moniker. Aerosmith, the Dead, Kiss and Metallica made it to old fart status still playing, and Jim Morrison and Jimmie Hendrix checked out too soon. Nirvana and G&R revived and "saved" rock and roll (it was never really close to dying) at times when bland corporate rock was purvasive - while Lou Reed and Iggy Pop practically invented genres that became rock and roll uniforms of subsequent artists. Brian Wilson. Pet Sounds. Enough said. But hot rod and surf rock with great harmonies for the rest of a career do not a "greatest R&R Band" label made.

You made a lot of points I was going to cover. Rock & roll is so wide a genre that many types will fit in (Beach Boys = surf rock, CCR = country/blues rock, Eagles and Journey = middle of the road rock, Styx = pop rock, Kiss and G&R = hard rock, and Nirvana = grunge rock). Aerosmith is hard to categorize, since they went from semi-hard rock band in the '70s to a mainstream--almost pop-rock--band in the late '80s and throughout the '90s. Yet, clearly all of these can be referred to as a "rock" band.

Hendrix and Bruce Springsteen were essentially solo acts even though they had named bands backing them.

In my mind, when you say "American rock and roll", you refer to music from late '50s through the late '60s...after that, it's "rock". The symantics may be trivial, but the music is different. Thus, the Beach Boys are the embodiment of "American rock and roll". They have likely influenced more American rock bands in some way than any other band listed in the poll. I like other American bands (CCR, Aerosmith, Eagles) more than I do the Beach Boys, but there's no denying that the Beach Boys are the bedrock of American rock and roll.

I'm glad The Byrds got a vote, many people don't realize what a great band they were. Most people just remember their early stuff like Tamborine Man and Turn! Turn! Turn! which were great songs but they really grew up even after alot of changes. My favorite album of theirs was Notorious Byrd brothers which had some great songs.

Gram Parson joined the group for their next album and they went country and had some very good songs, a few Dylan covers mixed in
