One more thing, Fleetwood Mac was originally formed in London and was a mix of Brits and Americans.

This is not entirely accurate.

When originally formed, in London, it was all... well... Anglos.

Then some stuff happened.

Then they were based out of LA and added Nicks and Buckingham... so.. it's iffy. But, I think its this period I'd be judging on, so, it works for me.

I think if we call the Jimi Hendrix Experience "English" (which I would), Fleetwood Mac, at worst, has "dual citizenship"

And to Muck's earlier point, the English Bands could populate the whole of the top 5, I'd agree, but, if you turned it to "Acts" (ie, "Solo Artists" as well) the US would immediately be very well represented. I think that's a product of how the industries in each country work though, where you have a lot of single person branding, or, someone who leaves a group to go "solo" - Meanwhile the Anglos like to form lots of supergroups.

If cheese bands like Cheap Trick and Journey can make the list so can Huey Lewis. They had some good stuff, especially their later stuff that didn't get much radio play.

They primarily got included due to making the various "top blah blah American bands" polls & lists I found while deciding on who to add. I probably would have put Journey on there regardless just due to how huge they were at the time. Either them or Def Leppard ...had to include at least one stadium rock band.

Def Leppard is English. Sheffield I believe.

Well the key founding members (Mick Fleetwood, John McVie and Peter Green) were brits, the group was founded in London so even though they may have moved to LA and took on US members they're essential still a British band.
If I had to make a top ten list of my favorite rock bands 8 or 9 would be British bands. Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Black Sabbath, ELO, The Police, Pink Floyd, Supertramp, Queen, Elton John, David Bowie, Deep Purple, ELP, The Animals, Jethro Tull, The Kinks, Thin Lizzy, Slade...the list could go on. There's some pretty impressive names there. But we do have REO, Eddie Money and Styx

The Other band I would nominate is Grand Funk Railroad. Hell of a band.
True "rock and roll" band...

He surrounded himself with some of the best musicians in the world. Terry Bozzio, Adrein Bellew and Lowell George. His crew was phenominal.
His studio crew was better than 99.9% of the bands in the world...

I've been busting my brain trying to think: What is the best American band nobody has mentioned yet?

My answer: Sonic Youth

Critical Appeal: Check
Groundbreaking: Check
Longevity: Check
Massively Influential: Check
Adoration of fellow musicians: Check
Sustained popularity: Probably not enough

I was trying to make a case for Ratt, but sadly, they failed on nearly all my criteria.

For those that have not heard of the Pixies you should recognize this song...

These were the guys that we the Seattle sound before Nirvana and Soundgarden. They still sound current today and this was 25 years ago. Very influential and important band.
