Ventured out for 18 on Sunday. I got paired up with an interesting guy. He is the golf industry's dream. He had a brand new set of Adams golf clubs with a nice tour bag. All of his clubs had huge oversized grips. He also had a handheld GPS, a watch GPS and a rangefinder. At the end of his putter grip, he had a little cup that allowed him to pick the ball up without bending over. He also had stands (for lack of a better word) that he put on his clubs so that the grips didn't touch the ground when he laid them down while he was putting.

The sad thing is that he was probably a 40 handicap. I don't understand why people pay so much money for gadgets and new clubs when lessons would benefit them so much more.

And let me guess, did he repeatedly say, "I never play this bad."

To his credit, he never said that, though, he apologized repeatedly for hitting bad shots and explained that he always gets nervous playing with new people. I kind of felt bad for the guy. I really wanted to tell him "stop wasting your money on all of this bullshit and get some lessons," but I try not to give unsolicited advice.

Personally, if I could do it all over, I would have taken lessons before ever playing the game.

A husband and wife are on the 9th green when suddenly she collapses from a heart attack!

"Help me dear," she groans to her husband.

The husband calls 911 on his cell phone, talks for a few minutes, picks up his putter, and lines up his putt.

His wife raises her head off the green and stares at him.

"I'm dying here and you're putting?"

"Don't worry dear," says the husband calmly, "they found a doctor on the second hole and he's coming to help you.

"Well, how long will it take for him to get here?" she asks feebly.

"No time at all," says her husband. "Everybody's already agreed to let him play through."

A young man and a priest are playing together. At a short par-3 the priest asks, "What are you going to use on this hole, my son?"

The young man says, "An 8-iron, father. How about you?"
The priest says, "I'm going to hit a soft seven and pray."

The young man hits his 8-iron and puts the ball on the green.
The priest tops his 7-iron and dribbles the ball out a few yards.

The young man says, "I don't know about you, father, but in my church, when we pray, we keep our head down."

Police are called to an apartment and find a woman holding a bloody 5-iron standing over a lifeless man.

The detective asks, "Ma'am, is that your husband?"

"Yes" says the woman.

"Did you hit him with that golf club?"
"Yes, yes, I did." The woman begins to sob, drops the club, and puts her hands on her face.
"How many times did you hit him?"
"I don't know -- put me down for a five."

A golfer teed up his ball on the first tee, took a mighty swing and hit his ball into a clump of trees. He found his ball and saw an opening between 2 trees he thought he could hit through.

Taking out his 3-wood, he took a mighty swing. The ball hit a tree, bounced back, hit him in the forehead and killed him.

As he approached the gates of Heaven, St. Peter asked, "Are you a good golfer?"

The man replied: "Got here in two, didn't I?

temperature in the mid-60s here yesterday. Got a group together and walked 18. My ball striking was surprisingly good - 12 GIRs. My putting on the otherhand was horrid - 0 birides. I would say that 8 of the GIRs were 10 ft or less.

I am ready for spring to get here. With the 2013 PGA season kicking off this weekend, the golf bug has really set in. Can't wait to hit the sticks again.

Did anyone upgrade their bag over the holidays? I picked a new set of wedges from Scratch Golf.

Have not touched a club since middle of October. Like you, watching golf on TV got me excited.

I am thinking about redoing my bag this year. I really like the Adams CMB irons. Also want to get a Scotty GOLO or Bettinardi putter. Probably bail on my old R11 and pick up a new driver.

I really like my Betti. Only the second putter I have ever owned. I had thought about moving to a combo set of Titleist irons, but I am going to stick with my irons for another season

which model bettinardi do you have?

I went out to the PGA Superstore today and rolled some putts with the BB35 and liked the feel. I also wanted to hit the CMB irons, however they only had a used set with ProjectX 5.5s in them. Hit a few balls and was not a fan, probably the shaft. The guy had me try out the Mizuno MP-59s with DG X100s in them and OMG, I was loving every ball I hit. Just a pured 6iron with a slight draw carrying 197, over and over. When the weather turns I want to do an outdoor session with both the CMBs with CTapers and the MP59s.

I definitely have the golf bug again.

I have the BB54. I added two degrees of loft to it. I utilize a Kuchar-esque putting style...though obviously not as effectively.

That is funny, I wouldn't have any other shaft in my irons (PX5.5). Different strokes for different folks. I love Mizuno irons. IMHO, the MP32s are some of the best irons ever made. I want to hit some Titleist MB and CB s with PX5.5s in them. I don't play as much as I once did, so maybe AP2s would be a better choice. Anything wrong with an AP2, MB & CB combo set? :tongue2:

Got bored and went to Golfsmith today. I currently play 2008 TM Burner Tour Irons - gigantic cavity backs, but hey, I have a 10.8 index, so I need the help...or so I thought. Nice guy at GS by the name of Chris brought me several different 6 irons: Cleveland 588mb, Titleist 712mb, Mizuno MP59 and Mizuno MP 69. I actually hit everyone of them better than my clubs. I thought the 712s would be my favorite, but they weren't. I have to agree with you, the MP59s are unbelievable. Long and very forgiving for a mb. I am about 10-15 yards shorter than you. With a little draw, my carry was consistently between 183-186. When I hit a baby push-fade, my carry was 179-183 on decently struck shots. The Clevelands were also great. My first ball carried 189, but I couldn't replicate it. The 712s, were nice, but were my least favorite. I really want a mp59-mp69 combo set now that I am addicted to that Mizuno feel again. I am such a club ho.

Planning a short golf trip (3 day weekend) with some friends to Cincinnati in May. Wanting to get 2-3 rounds in and catch a Reds game. I know the area just north of Cincinnati well, i.e. Lebanon, Wilmington, Springboro, Centerville, etc., but I know nothing about golf in Cincinnati (within 15 minutes). Are there any great public or semi-private courses? Must plays? Definitely avoids?

Thanks in advance.

Within 15 minutes of where? Do you have a hotel? Downtown, NKY or on the edge of the city?

Some of the newer clubs have gone semi-private to make ends meet. They are mostly in the norther suburbs it seems and though I haven't played them they seem like decent tracks and decent deals.

I tend to gravitate toward the Hamilton County courses such as Sharon Woods (north) or The Vineyard (southeast). They are nothing spectacular, but they are decent courses at decent prices.

Avoid the city/CRC courses. They are not maintained very well and some are in poor locations. Only good for cheap league golf.

Worst course I've played is Hartwell in Finneytown. Once upon a time is was an athletic club for CG&E employees. Now it's run-down and depleted. The fees are dirt cheap, and even for that price it's a rip-off. My father-in-law took me there - I had to play thru sprinklers on the first hole, had to skip the eighth because the green was covered in duck shit, and had my credit card charged twice for the privilege.
