I was lucky enough to play Bethpage Black (from the tips) a few weeks before the open was played there. I played with three other guys that had single digit handicaps and I was the only one to break 100 ( I think I shot 93). The 10th (I believe) was ridiculous as the carry just to reach the fairway was in excess of 260 yards. I found out later that Dana Quigley (at that time the current U.S. Senior Open Champ) withdrew because he couldn't reach the fairway from that tee.

It was a brutal day as the rough was already 5" and the wind was at 20-25 mph. I asked the head pro there what would have been the average score on the course if the open would have been held that day. His answer, mid to high 70's..... The pros were really lucky during Open week as the weather was benign. You couldn't hold the ball on the green down wind and I actually had a putt blown 1' off line. I don't play much anymore and I would shudder to guess what I would score now......
I believe the Open will be back there in a year or two....

So far this year I have played-

Safari- They took out a few holes, added others, did some work on the course. Made it into a better course. The new golf holes are really good, but the 18th is not a good finishing hole IMO

Phoenix- They put 2 million plus into it, and the course is a little better. The layout is goofy. The first tee and the 18th greens are a trek from the clubhouse. They also need to invest in someone to monitor pace of play. a 744 am round should not last 5 hours.

Tartan East- This was the new Winding Hollow. It is not a public course and is well worth the cost. Greens are immaculate. Even better than Cumberland Trail.

A note- Nobody took me up on the Spielman Scramble. I ended up buying two rounds. My dad was supposed to play, but he has had some major bad eye mojo these past few months. (detached retina and complications)

He won't be able to play. I know it's expensive, but it is paid for, so if interested, let me know and I can come up with a fair price. Add to the fact that it's for a damn good charity and is a way to rub elbows with some Buckeyes.

If you don't mind me asking. What are they charging for out of state right now. I will be heading out there at the end of Aug. We were offered a guaranteed tee time, and a caddy on the Black course for $280 by a broker.
I also will be playing Eisenhower Red while out there. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Geez, I really don't remember. We had no caddie but I think the green fee was in the $100 range. Remember this is just before the Open and six years ago. The price has probably went up.

I looked it up on the internet.....

New York State Parks :: Bethpage State Park Golf Courses

Black Course
The Black Course is a difficult and challenging course that should be played only by low-handicap golfers. The course is for walkers only and its slope rating is one of the highest in the northeast. This was one of the last courses designed by master golf course architect A.W. Tillinghast, and is said by many to be his finest work. The Black Course served as the site of the 102nd U.S. Open Championship in 2002. Our National Championship will again return to the Black in 2009. The narrow fairways, high roughs, well placed bunkers and small greens help to make this an extremely difficult course.

The Black Course is closed Mondays for course maintenance except holidays.

In related golf news, I get to go to the US Open this weekend for business. The PGA uses our registers and software to sell merchandise, I get to babysit intern cashiers.....hawt intern cashiers

Don't you mean the USGA since they are the ones holding the event....
The PGA administers the majority of the tourneys throughout the year but the Open is administered by the USGA......

Eisenhower is next on my list. The senior tour is out there either this week or next. Black isn't that expensive, like 120 or something. The broker is probably charging for the tee time. That itself is probably worth 100 bucks. Otherwise you would have to show up around 3 or 4am to get a group out there.

Wingate, the US Open is back at bethpage next year, 2009. That 10th hole is legendary. Every person i ask who has played there talks about the carry to get over the long grass.

Played Cook's Creek for the first time this year and always have to pinch myself to realize the number of quality courses in Central Ohio that play for an EXTREMELY low rate.

A course like that back in Quahog would cost over $100.

just played a course called Sunken Meadow on the isle of long (long island). i tied my lowest score ever. i had an eagle putt on 18 to shoot 66 and i left it short right in the jaws. i couldn't believe it. i hit a 3 wood on the green from 250 and i accidentaly hit into the guys ahead of us because i didn't think i had a chance to get on. i went up to apologize and they were like "dude, that was awesome" they said i wsa inside all of their birdie putts. i love golf on days like this.

You're lucky not a lot of guys would be that grateful when hitting into them. I haven't gotten out to play yet this year because my dad is putting shaft extenders in my irons. :sad2:But I'm heading home for the 4th and I'll play a couple rounds then. :groove:

Friday I was golfing and shot my lowes score ever. Granted it was at a very easy course that I have played since I first learned to golf. It was a 62 (+3). I had a hole in one on a 100 yard hole. used a 7 iron and at first I was like crap there goes the birdie but it took a nice hop onto the green and dribbled down the slope right into the whole. They said they heard me back at the club house.

In case anyone is wondering its a small place called Little Creek Golf Course in Spring Grove, PA. They are closing it soon for residential development and I am getting my last few rounds in before it closes.
