I just picked up golfing this past weekend... bought a starter set at Dick's Sporting Goods then promptly went to a driving range with a friend to try out the new clubs. He said I hit the ball well for my first time out but I'm heading to the range a few more times before I go to a course. Once I do go to a course though I'd like to get my feet wet on a par 3 course before trying a full course. Any suggestions for the Central Ohio area?

I have played there several times and never had any slow play issues. I think it is a decent course, not great. They have some good deals there if you play during the week or late in the day. the greens are generally in pretty good shape and not overly undulating. My issue is with the rough, they have been open for over two years now and the rough still has not filled in very well. That and the trains that go by every 15 minutes. There is not much trouble there (unless you hit it out of bounds a lot) I think it is a place you can shoot a pretty low score.

IIRC, it was the first week they were open as Glen Ross. There were just too many people on the course. I assume that it was the exception rather than the rule, and I am willing to go back, especially if I decide on the Divot Card thump posted about.

Just wanted a feel for how it has grown.

wilson rd. its cheap, short, the pace of play is slow (which is good and bad you wont feel awful if your pace is slow, though the slowness may take some of the fun out of it.)

Make sure you know how to speak Japanese if you go there also.

First time out...

Blacklick has an executive course par 60 or something like that. A couple of 4's, a 5 and mostly 3's.

Wilson Road has a small 9 hole course that is mostly 3s as well.

Thanks for the suggestions... I'll check those out.

Some golf notes...

-I am buying a Divot card. I knew about it, but wasn't sure about buying one.

Turns out my ex boss bought one and has time to play during the week. I did a review of my available personal time and said what the hey....

-Phoenix Golf Links has an interesting outing. 2 man scramble on 7/2/07. Includes typical scramble stuff plus a golf shirt from Phoenix GL and golf rain jacket from Heineken. Beer is also included. After the round they are having a party for Red White and Boom. You should have a decent view of the fireworks from Phoenix. IMO the course is average at best, and they are asking too much, but I thought it worth a mention.

-The Shamrock Club has changed their annual outing from Phoenix GL to two courses. They will have their outing on 7/28/07 at Foxfire and The Players Club. The Players Club is an awesome course. IIRC it is $79 per at TPC and $69 at Foxfire. Round includes beer (A keg at the clubhouse and one of the par 3s) box lunch, and steak dinner. I have played in their outings before but have to miss this one. It is a good time.

Lastly, I played Glen Ross again this weekend. Much better pace of play and a better managed course. They do need to improve their rough. Decent course, but for $52 I would much rather play Northstar.

Ah, the old Blacklick Executive course. That's where I cut my teeth as a golfer. As I recall it's par 59 and there are no par 5's and only 5 par 4's (the longest of which is only 383 yards). But it's been a really long time since I've been there (16-17 years). Most "par 3" courses are pretty crappy but this one is just like playing a real course. I highly recommend it for beginners, especially if you live on the East side because Wilson is on the West side.

Does anyone on here remember the old "Golden Wedge"? Now there was a true beginner's course. It was a hacker's paradise.
