Game Thread THE GAME: Ohio State 42, Michigan 7 (Nov. 22)

"The Game" is simply "The Game."

If the Planets aligned properly, and on a given saturday in November the following sporting events happened to occur on the same day:
Game 7 of the World Series
The Super Bowl
Game 7 NBA Finals
Game 7 Stanley Cup Finals
The Masters
Team USA playing for Olympic Gold
The Game

My bet is that "flashback" buttons on a true Buckeye Fan's remote control wouldn't be touched a single time. The Game is all those events rolled in to one for us. No, I take that back, it's MUCH BIGGER that all of those events added together.

Peace.

RichRod gets plenty of advice from UM fans

By Brian Kollars | Tuesday, November 18, 2008, 12:28 PM
Just got off the Big Ten teleconference, which led off with Jim Tressel and had Rich Rodriguez batting second. (That?s probably how things will play out at Saturday at Ohio Stadium, too.)
No good bulletin-board material, but Rodriguez ? Michigan?s rookie coach who has taken plenty of heat for his team?s dreary 3-8 record ? did show a pulse when he was asked if he?s been coached-up on the rivalry he?s about to dive into.
?Yeah, I?ve had about 480,000 alumni coaching me up,? Rodriguez said. ?If I?m on vacation or wherever, if I see a Michigan fan they?ll say, ?Good luck ? and beat Ohio State.? ?
A stat thrown out by one of the writers on the conference call: The past six Michigan coaches have won in their first try against Ohio State.
That streak is likely to end. The Wolverines are three-touchdown underdogs ? a shocking line. Rodriguez faces the tough job of trying to honor the rivalry while not making too big a deal out of the game, should his team get thumped.
?Our players should feel the intensity, but I think our focus when the game starts should be on the next play,? he said. ?That?s going to be my talk to them today.?
THE PRYOR QUESTION: It was mentioned to Rodriguez that OSU freshman QB Terrelle Pryor had his dad call the new Michigan coach to turn down a scholarship offer earlier this year.
Rodriguez did not offer up any specifics as to how that went down, only saying, ?You like to get that last call (before a player commits). We had a good relationship in the recruiting process and got to know him well, and obviously he?s doing some remarkable things for the Buckeyes this fall.?

Underdog UM has underdog QB; former walk-on starts against OSU
By JOE VARDON
BLADE SPORTS WRITER
ANN ARBOR - Nick Sheridan said this week that playing the role of underdog is overrated. He should know. While other major college quarterbacks his age were busy racking up all-state and All-American accolades in high school in 2005, Sheridan was an honorable-mention all-conference quarterback his senior year at Saline High. He walked on to Michigan's football team the next year and wasn't awarded a scholarship until this summer. Paired against a taller, more gifted, and highly recruited Steven Threet to be the Wolverines' quarterback in 2008, it was Sheridan who took the first snaps against Utah on opening day. And it is Sheridan who will start against 10th-ranked and heavily favored Ohio State Saturday. While Sheridan refuses to see himself as a David in a world full of Goliaths, he recognizes the odds he's overcome to find himself in this position heading into UM's biggest and last game this year. "I've thought of that, but I don't pay attention to that or get overwhelmed by the fact that I came in as a walk-on and now I'm starting against Ohio State," Sheridan said. "That doesn't change anything." Sheridan is starting against the Buckeyes because Threet suffered a separated shoulder in the fourth quarter last week against Northwestern. Sheridan started that game, too, because Threet had missed practice time after the concussion he incurred Nov. 1 against Purdue. That concussion forced Threet to miss UM's game against Minnesota Nov. 8, which opened the door for Sheridan to have his best collegiate performance. He completed 18 of 30 passes for 203 yards and a touchdown with no turnovers, leading the Wolverines to a decisive victory. But that outstanding performance was followed by a clunker in a 21-14 loss to Northwestern. Like the entire team, Sheridan couldn't carry over the momentum from one week to the next. "I don't know if you can pinpoint what exactly changed between Minnesota and Northwestern," said Sheridan, who was 8-of-29 for 61 yards against the Wildcats. "It's just a few plays here or there that can get you out of rhythm, stunt drives, or keep you from getting things going." Sheridan's father, Bill Sheridan, was an assistant coach at UM from 2002-04, and it's no secret Bill's son wants to follow in his footsteps. Sheridan said his desire to one day be a coach led to speculation that he enrolled at UM not to play football, but to be a student assistant coach and learn for later in life. He dismissed that story as rumor this week. "I think people are blowing that up," Sheridan said. "I didn't come to Michigan to be a student coach. I came as a player and I came to play football and compete."

OSU football: 2008 game has same feel as 1978
Freshman QBs led Buckeyes into rivalry
Wednesday, November 19, 2008 3:03 AM
By Ken Gordon

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
A much-hyped freshman quarterback shows up at Ohio State, takes over from an established veteran, and performs well enough to lead the Buckeyes into the Michigan game with a Big Ten title and Rose Bowl bid at stake. It happened in 1978 with Art Schlichter, and 30 years later, it's happening again with Terrelle Pryor.
"I guess I'm most surprised that it's been so long since a true freshman played at Ohio State," said Schlichter, an analyst for WTVN-AM (610). "Kids today come out of high school so much better prepared than guys in my era were."
The comparison isn't perfect. Schlichter started from day one and took his share of lumps -- he threw 21 interceptions that season against four touchdowns.
Pryor took over in the fourth game, and has been careful with the ball, with just three interceptions.
But both showed enough leadership and promise that their teams had successful seasons entering Michigan week.
The 1978 Buckeyes were 7-2-1 and ranked 16th, and a win would send them to Pasadena. This year's team is 9-2 and ranked 10th, and a win on Saturday will send it to Pasadena if Michigan State beats Penn State.
Ohio State fans hope the parallels end there, as Schlichter's team lost 14-3 to Michigan.
Schlichter thought he progressed the most after that loss to the Wolverines, during bowl practice leading up to the Gator Bowl. That's when he had time to "finally get a grasp on what we were doing," he said.
In Pryor's case, he had the luxury of an open week on Nov. 1, and not coincidentally, Schlichter said that's when he saw Pryor take a step forward.
Coming off a 13-6 loss to Penn State on Oct. 25 -- the Buckeyes' third game this season without an offensive touchdown -- OSU roared back with two solid road victories (45-10 at Northwestern and 30-20 at Illinois) in which Pryor accounted for 389 yards of total offense, five touchdowns and no turnovers.

Interesting tidbit from Pat Forde (emphasis mine):

The Not-Great Eight

ESPN research monster Brett Edgerton passes along the following reason for Ohio State fans to root for Vanderbilt this week and/or Kentucky next week when they play Tennessee (25): With one more loss, the Volunteers will join Michigan at the eight-loss plateau for the first time ever.

And that would leave Ohio State as the only current FBS school to have never lost eight games in a season. The Volunteers will have to win back-to-back games for the first time since last November -- when they beat Vandy and Kentucky -- to avoid that fate.

Goooooooo....somebody playing Tennessee!!!

Just goes to show even our bad seasons aren't nearly as bad as other teams' bad seasons.

Rich Rodriguez hopes to avoid becoming an anomaly: a Michigan football coach who loses his first game against Ohio State.

The 105th chapter of college football's greatest rivalry will be written Saturday afternoon when Ohio State entertains Michigan with a noon kickoff in Ohio Stadium. The Wolverines lead the all-time series 57-41-6, but the past 80 games (1928 through 2007) are even at 38-38-4.
Michigan's 16 more victories than Ohio State are primarily the result of the Wolverines' record of 13-0-2 during the first 15 games (played from 1897 to 1918). Halfback Chic Harley led OSU to its long-awaited initial win, on Oct. 25, 1919 -- 13-3 in Ann Arbor.
Ohio State has won the past four games. With a victory Saturday, OSU's five-game winning streak would be its longest over the Wolverines. Prior to the present winning streak, the Buckeyes twice won four straight -- 1934-1937 under coach Francis Schmidt and 1960-1963 under coach Woody Hayes. Michigan's longest winning streak over Ohio State is nine straight from 1901-1909. The Wolverines also won six in a row from 1922 to 1927.
