Thad Matta (OSU's All Time Winningest Coach & 3x B1G COY, Butler HC)

The football fans didn't show up consistently when OSU was close to the summit of college basketball. They're not about to show up now for JaQuan Lyle.

side note about the Schott;

Went to my first game there against Marshall the night before The Game and sat in the singularly most uncomfortable seats I have ever had the ill luck to occupy in my sports going life.

I am 6'2", not abnormally tall or wide by any stretch of the imagination, and I couldn't sit comfortably facing straight forward. Had to sit at an angle and the fucking seat back in front of me was still digging into my shins. These were supposedly the "good" seats mind you, not the ones up in the rafters.

If we lived in C'bus and they were a Final Four caliber team I wouldn't pay money to go see them just from those fucking seats. Serious as a heart attack, they were that bad.

You're correct, but you'd also be surprised. The year that Mike Redd and Scoonie brought excitement back to Columbus basketball, I made the trip to the box office to try to pick up some tickets for one of the upcoming home games....the Schott was still pretty new, but there hadn't been any excitement surrounding basketball for six or seven years. I could not buy a ticket at the box office. They were gone for all the Big Ten games.

And, I wasn't suggesting moving games to St. John's at all....just saying the attendance for these early games is so low they might as well be there. I don't know if some of these early games broke 8,000 in actual attendance, judging from the looks of the camera shots.

OK, I'm going to go ahead and drive this in deeper. Thad Matta was the 7th highest paid coach in the country in 2016. 7th. Top 10 money. And this team won't even finish top-10 in the conference. A $3.5M salary should put you in the "basketball school" category.

Holy crap Jaime Dixon is still at Pitt??? and JT III at GTown ... i thought it was an old list.

I like Thad but this program is trending in the wrong direction.

34-3, 16-2 1st in the B1G
31–8, 13–5 T–1st
29-8, 13–5 2nd
25-10, 10-8 5th
24-11, 11-7 6th
21-14, 11-7 7th

Just checked to make sure my feelings from last night were in line with the facts. Those are our last 6 seasons. Yep, that's a trend.

The Bucks are currently 10-6, 0-3 13th in the B1G. :getout:

If Matta does not leave on his own terms and is fired after this season, there will be a big black smudge on the HC vacancy and it will be very hard to fill with a quality coach. In addition, I do not see him leaving and I do not see him being fired.

So Matta needs 10 more wins (conference and postseason) to keep his lifetime 20-win streak alive. Not looking good.

Sorry Thad. Everybody wants you to retire or just quit.. I guess it is what have you done for me lately. It will be interesting to see who they to replace you. I think you know what you are doing but obviously I am in the minority.. You run a clean program and have given it your all but everyone wants you to call because they think they can find someone better.

I get what you're saying, Matta has done wonders here, and done it the right way. But, how long do you let the program continue to slip? How much rope does his first eight-nine years buy? He's in a six year slide right now, and this year looks like it could be really bad. A tournament appearance this year will take a miracle, and if they do not make it, that gives him one tournament win in four years. Given the roster's current make-up and the recruits coming in, the future doesn't look much better. Does he know what he's doing? I don't think it's so much "knowing" as having the ability to do it. None of us know how much his back problems have hindered his ability to coach and recruit, but I suspect it plays a substantial role. It would be a helluva coincidence that the results have been steadily falling off as reports of his health issues started.

I HATE that it looks like it's gonna end this way. He deserves more, but it's a results-based business. The program is nose-diving, and keeping a guy on because he did great things a half a decade ago isn't good for anyone. My hope is he recognizes the need for change and bows out gracefully. I don't want it to come to firing him. I wouldn't want to be in Gene Smith's shoes right now.
