Thad Matta (OSU's All Time Winningest Coach & 3x B1G COY, Butler HC)

OHIO STATE COACH THAD MATTA 'JACKED UP, READY TO ROLL' FOR ANOTHER SEASON

Thad Matta sat down at the podium and perked up in his chair a bit. Ohio State’s head coach had a little extra juice Wednesday afternoon, some added pep in his step.

“I’m ready to go,” Matta said. “I think from the standpoint of I’m excited to play. I’m excited for the event that we’re in so from my standpoint I’m like jacked up, ready to roll.”

Welcome to another season of Ohio State basketball.

Matta is about to begin his 13th season at the helm leading the Buckeyes. He is the winningest coach in program history and the second-longest tenured coach in the Big Ten behind only Michigan State’s Tom Izzo.

Last season was a rough one for Matta and Ohio State, however. The Buckeyes went 21-14 and missed the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2008, and they finished seventh in the Big Ten — the lowest finish of Matta’s career. One player transferred in the middle of the season and three more departed at year’s end leaving Ohio State with just one member of its once highly-touted 2015 recruiting class.

For the first time in a long time, there were legitimate questions about Matta’s program.

But Matta chugged right along. He signed four players who figure to play key roles on this season’s team in addition to the top-six leading scorers Ohio State returns from last year. The Buckeyes open the regular season Friday at Navy.

“I feel like going into Navy, we’re going in with the right mindset,” junior forward Jae’Sean Tate said. “We’ve been working hard this week in practice and I think we’re hungry to start the season.”

As noted by others in the season thread, the Buckeyes decline has coincided with Thad's health issues. Maybe it's just coincidental, maybe it's not, but it's real regardless.

It'll always be a bit of an uphill battle for any hoops coach at Ohio State, living in the shadow of the football program. But with all the resources at their disposal, Ohio State should not be losing home games to Florida Atlantic, Texas-Arlington and Louisiana Tech, and settling for NIT bids.

Not saying Thad's health isn't an issue but the decline has also directly coincided with Greg Paulus's promotion to OC. I've never seen any indication that he's qualified for the job.

Thad's health probably makes it harder to take recruiting trips to scout players. Maybe it forces him to cut short film study sessions and time in the office. But it doesn't have anything to do with rewarding the half assed effort of Amir Williams and Marc Loving with extensive playing time and teaching the younger players that you don't have to give your all in order to get minutes. It's built a culture of mediocrity. I figured it wouldn't be until next year after Loving is gone until they'd contend for a conference title. Now I fear it's infected the other players and we're likely to see more of the same.

After the Oden/Conley team, Matta's recruiting has seem to be flawed. He doesn't seem to recruit for all 5 positions. He chases the position he is currently lacking and creates another hole in the process, it has become a never ending cycle. Imagine if he didn't luck into Craft, Sully wouldn't have had a point guard.

this is a great point. story is that Sully had to actually talk them into recruiting craft.....ugh I love Matta as OSU's bball coach and I seriously dont want him to go but on the other hand....what we are witnessing is not good. lackluster wins, lackluster losses, half full arena, recruiting falling off......

Two points. Chris Jent is in charge of the offense starting this season and if you want to talk about Thad's health he was much worse a couple seasons ago. At times, he had to be helped off the locker room floor by his assistants because he was in so much pain.

Well, I don't see any real difference in 'spacing' which is what Jent gave as his solution to the offensive woes.....looks much the same as last year. I also call BS on the football thing, and I'm sure the list is not all inclusive, but Florida pops to mind as a dual winner, and ?, so not making excuses. Hate to see Mata go as well, he's done so very much good for the BB program, but man, health is way more important. Recruits seem to know which program is on the 'rise', and which is in 'decline'. One thing that is a bell cow for me, is free throw shooting. Not sure tOSU has cracked 66% in any of Thad's years here. What ever happened to the 10 for 10 before you could shower up? Anyway, Coop (good 'ol 2-10-1) opened the way for country-wide recruiting for football, and then couldn't get over the hump. Thad got a lot of mileage in peaking for the B10 tournament, winning or runner up, but now they are not even making the tournament. Dunno, but not sure that the AD has the cojones to put Thad out to pasture. Geiger would have.....Anyway, Go Bucks always.

Florida is the best you can come up with

I think it is very clear that the Ohio State basketball program is in trouble. It's Coach Matta's job to sort that out. He has been fantastic, but I fell the same way that NFBuck and Jake feel. This just doesn't feel like it has a happy ending right now.
