Thad Matta (OSU's All Time Winningest Coach & 3x B1G COY, Butler HC)

Bump for Thad. tOSU is a football school, of that there is no doubt. But I'm really glad that Matta is coaching my basketball team.

Go Bucks!
Definitely OSU's best head coach since the legendary Fred Taylor. Quick comparison:

Fred Taylor
18 seasons (1958-1976)
Overall record: 297-158, 65.3%
Conference record: 158-102, 60.8%
Big Ten titles: 7
NCAA appearances: 5
NCAA championships: 1
NCAA runner-up: 2

Thad Matta
7 seasons (2004-2011, before this season)
Overall record: 190-57, 76.9%
Conference record: 85-35, 70.8%
Big Ten titles: 4 regular season, 3 tournament
NCAA appearances: 5
NCAA championships: 0
NCAA runner-up: 1

Taylor has the record for number of wins and Matta currently sits 101 away from that. If OSU continues at their current pace he'll get that record in the next 3-4 seasons. If he can manage a national title at some point (this year would be nice ) Matta definitely belongs at the top of the list of all-time Buckeye basketball coaches.

Thad Matta has Coach K's seal of approval as Ohio State and Duke meet Tuesday night
Published: Monday, November 28, 2011
By Tom Reed, The Plain Dealer

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The first time Thad Matta faced Mike Krzyzewski and the Duke Blue Devils he was a 36-year-old coach on the come, a budding basketball architect still in the business of building great teams, not programs.

It was March 28, 2004 and Matta had his upstart Xavier Musketeers in the Elite Eight, his final game before becoming coach at Ohio State. Seven years later, he can cite specific details of the 66-63 loss, exact moments when players fouled out and how a blown defensive assignment led to a game-tying, 3-point shot from Duke's Loul Deng.

But Matta's most memorable encounter with Krzyzewski -- the all-time winningest Division I coach -- occurred four months after the game as the men were scouting a high-school showcase.

"Coach K stopped me and said, 'I believe you just got one of the best jobs in the country,'" Matta said. "He said, 'I've looked at Ohio State for the last 25 years and I think you can win there. ... He saw something here that I saw."

I think he is about as good as it gets when it comes to the college game. I just don't think he gets the national publicity that the other "big name" coaches get. I certainly would rather have him than any other college including the one who got out coached last night:) and could only talk about how the difficult early schedule.

Does anyone think Matta could stick around like Coach K or Boeheim? IF he does he'll undoubtedly be the greatest Buckeye basketball coach of all time. I haven't heard what his long term plans were but I'd have a hard time believing he would leave for another school. Facilities are top notch and the area he's recruiting in, is loaded with talent. Love to see him retire here.

Not going to leave, but health may become an issue down the line if he isn't able to continue going 100mph like he wants to.

Yup, his back is bad, and getting on planes is probably not very comfortable for him. In addition, he loves teaching and it is very difficult for him to get around in practice on an office chair on wheels. His back has to affect his quality of life outside of basketball and I am sure he does not want to get to the point where he is unable to play with his two little girls and do other things with the family.

IMO there is no one else I would want running the show here. I love Coach Matta. What he has done during his time here to turn this into an elite program is awesome. You can tell he genuinely cares for and loves his players. I love seeing him and Boals up and yelling to encourage the guys. I have to imagine every one of his players love playing for him. Hope he stays for a long, long time!

Tom crean for Indiana seems to be in line to re-build the basketball program ever since there big win over Kentucky. I wonder what is the feeling between Coach Matta and coach crean. Do they respect each other or is there any friction between them. I seem to remember an incident that was not to pleasant between the coaches at the Indiana game last year.

This Indiana ball team seems to have some pretty good players and should Ohio State be concerned or is it just another BiG Ten ballgame that we have to deal with. Is Indiana that good right now. To me they could be a threat.
