Matta savors the moment after winning the Big Ten tournament in March.
Thad Matta is proud to say that he is from Hoopeston, Ill., a town of almost 6,000 people near the Indiana border.
It's where he learned how to ride a bike, drive a car and, most important to his life's path, play basketball.
He no longer has family living there.
"So I'm really a man without a home," Matta said.
Once criticized for being a job-jumper by some for leaving Butler after one year as coach and Xavier after three, Matta says Columbus has become a reasonable facsimile for home.
In seven years at Ohio State, Matta has won 190 games, four regular-season Big Ten championships, three conference tournament championships and reached one national championship game.
"Ohio has become home," said Matta, whose family moved into a home north of Columbus last year. "It's amazing how things have turned out. When I got here I didn't know much about Columbus or this university. Now, no question, I'm enjoying it here. I can honestly say that I wake up every day excited to go to work. I've been fortunate. A lot of things have fallen into place for me."

Matta says players? car deals are ?legit?
Wednesday, June 8, 2011
COLUMBUS ? Ohio State basketball coach Thad Matta said Wednesday that NCAA investigators looking into violations in the OSU football program have had no contact with him or anyone associated with the men?s basketball team regarding the conduct of his players or program.
?I think we?ve always tried to be as thorough as we possibly can with everything that we do,? Matta told The Columbus Dispatch.
Matta confirmed a Dispatch report last month that senior William Buford and former player Jon Diebler each bought a car from a Columbus dealership that is under investigation for whether its sales to OSU football players and their families violated NCAA rules. He said ?everything is legit? with Buford?s and Diebler?s purchases.
Highlights from Matta-Paulus
Most of the story I wrote for the paper Thursday on today's news conference with coach Thad Matta and new video coordinator Greg Paulus deals with Matta's responses to questions about the NCAA investigation of the Ohio State football program and disgraced former football coach Jim Tressel.
There was plenty more talked about, though -- which is why those of you who read this blog are the smartest people at the bar.

OSU_Buckguy;1948433; said:next season will be only the second time in matta's eight seasons that the team will be the preseason pick to finish atop the conference standings. heck, next year will be just the second time that most of the conference media and coaches pick ohio state to finish in the top two. in spite of the generally lower expectations, matta will be going for his fifth title.
when someone claims that matta is just a great recruiter but an average-at-best x's and o's coach, remind that troll of the aforementioned facts.
Oh8ch;1948476; said:And what I like to remind folks is that next season will be (I believe) only his third season at OSU where he has not had to replace four starters.
And let me add that he will field unprecedented depth next year. NINE players who were ranked 4 or 5 stars out of HS and the potential to field a starting lineup of all players who were ranked in the top 8 or better at their position in HS.
Here's Matta:
Q: What kind of reports have you received this summer on your players? Who?s had a particularly good summer in the open gyms? I've heard Deshaun Thomas and Jordan Sibert have improved.
Matta: I never trust what they tell me because I know nobody?s playing defense. But I think all of our guys have had a very good summer.
The one that they keep saying is playing real well is . . . LaQuinton (Ross). But I think the progress they?ve all made this summer has been good. I?ve heard Deshaun is down in his weight. I heard Jordan?s played well. But like I said, I always take everything with a grain of salt until we get 'em on the 15th.
Q: Is the main thing you're waiting to see from Sibert, maybe, more consistency making perimeter shots? If he does that, can he play a bigger role for you?)
Matta: I definitely think he can (have a greater role). I know this, he had a great spring shooting the ball. I think his shot got a lot better.
But he?s got to be able to defend a couple different positions and really take great pride in what he?s doing defensively.
Q: What about Evan Ravenel? What has he added to the group in the 14 months since he transferred here from Boston College?
Matta: Number one, he has worked extremely hard in the time that he?s been here. What he?s going to have to do is really embrace his role and be a great defender, a great rebounder -- in a lot of ways similar to a Dallas Lauderdale. He?s not as long and can?t jump as high (as Lauderdale), but I definitely think he can play a role for this team.
Q: How about the freshmen? What have you heard about them?
Matta: All the veterans said they?re coming, they?re getting more comfortable, the gains they made in the weight room, that sort of thing. I think they?ve got a pretty good understanding of the work that we?re going to put in.
They?ve said good things about all of them, from Shannon (Scott) being more aggressive to Amir (Williams), who only had five weeks with us, just getting more comfortable out there, getting a better feel. Trey (McDonald), kind of the same thing. And Sam (Thompson), the guys have said he?s a freak as far as athleticism.
Q: How much do you envision playing Jared Sullinger at power forward and how much at center? Or does that depend on how the other guys at those positions play?
Matta: It really does. That?s going to be a huge deal for us.
Matta talks senior leadership, expectations, new coaching staff at Basketball Media Days

The Ohio State basketball team had its annual media day on Thursday. Players were in uniform posing for pictures and, with the exception of freshmen, talked to reporters about a range of topics.
Coach Thad Matta said he's ready for the upcoming season and has high expectations.
"I think, hopefully, (the team is) on the verge of continuing to win at a high level, to play the game at a high level, and hopefully to continue to do it with great kids, and a great team," Matta said.
The 2011-2012 version of OSU's team features four new freshmen who will try to replace a talented class of seniors which included David Lighty, Jon Diebler and Dallas Lauderdale. Matta emphasized the importance of having senior leadership in the program.
"We saw last year the value of upperclassmen," Matta said. "As good as the freshmen were for us last year, they had a great anchor down there of three rock-solid seniors and a guy in William Buford who has been in the program for three years. I still don't know if you can put a price on that."
