Thad Matta (OSU's All Time Winningest Coach & 3x B1G COY, Butler HC)

I thought Coach Matta showed a good bit of restraint when Rome asked him if he'd ever seen a shooting night like that before.

Jim, you know it's funny because seeing as how that game set multiple NCAA records, no, I don't I have seen a night like that before, you ignorant fucktard.

He referenced a game he coached at Xavier where they routed Miss. State in the second round of the NCAA tourney en route to the elite 8 - they actually made 10 straight 3-pointers in that game en route to the Elite 8 (from 5:45 of the first half to the 7:54 mark in the second). http://espn.go.com/ncb/playbyplay?gameId=244000028

What are the odds that one coach has two entirely different teams that hit 10+ consecutive 3-pointers against quality competition? Perhaps we will see another 3-point shooting binge in a few years once Matta has an experienced group of guards again.

Looks like there will be no smear pieces from Doyel against the football program this week because he's too busy praising the basketball program.

All apologies, Thad, but your team is easy favorite

This is me being mean to Thad Matta. This is me being as mean as I will ever be to Thad Matta, because I like the guy.

So in honor of our special friendship, a friendship he probably knows nothing about -- but trust me, one that exists -- I've written the following piece of cruelty that I must address at Matta and his Ohio State basketball team:
I'm saying he has the best team in the country.

I'm saying, it's not even close.

So OK, that's not the bravest stand you'll ever see a sportswriter take. No. 1 Ohio State is the best team in the country? Wow. Bold. For my next trick, I'll decide not only that Auburn was the best team in college football last season, but I'll go out on a limb and say Cam Newton was the best player.

Thing is, that's how obvious this story feels to me, today, after watching Ohio State demolish Wisconsin on Sunday. That game sort of ticks me off, because I've been feeling this way for weeks, telling it to radio shows far and wide but never getting around to writing it. And then along comes Sunday, when the Buckeyes attempted 15 3-pointers and made 14 of them -- read that again -- to beat the Badgers by 28.

Cont'd ...

That was a pretty fun read coming from him, since he wasn't actually bashing a Buckeye team in it.

This from the comments had me cracking up though:

Bet the farm that the Buckeyes won't make the Sweet Sixteen and that Michigan will.

Michigan Wolverines will shock the world as this years Cinderella!

I have correctly predicted all NCAA Champs before the tournament began, and his year I am predicting Michigan Wolverines.

Did anybody think when Thad was hired that he would take this program to these heights? I know I didn't. I just wanted to get back to repectability, win the occasional B10 title, and become a tournament regular. I'd say he's far exceeded that.

I could enjoy seeing something like that in a Sweet 16 thrashing of UK . . .

Matta Finalist for 2011 Naismith Men's College Coach of the Year

Four would-be first-time winners headline the four finalists for the 2011 Naismith Men's College Coach of the Year, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced today. Mike Brey (Notre Dame), Steve Fisher (San Diego State), Thad Matta (Ohio State) and Dave Rose (BYU) make up the final ballot for the most prestigious national award presented annually to the top men's college basketball coach. The winner will be announced in early April.

Got no problems with the selections of Matta, Brey or Fisher.

Dave Rose from BYU would be an issue. Don't know how deserving a coach is for an award when his gameplan is, "Hey everybody, pass the ball to Jimmer and get the heck out of the way."

(See that, I didn't curse there in my phony quote because he's the coach of BYU).

You didn't swear, but wouldn't insubordination towards BYU staff like that be a violation of the honor code?

As an aside, I guess the national COY voters can see the big picture and the Big Ten voters can't, which must be why Painter got COY this year. Apparently all Big Ten COY voters care about is where teams finish in the conference - it's more important that two teams are separated by one spot in the league standings than 12-13 spots in the national rankings.
