Thad Matta (OSU's All Time Winningest Coach & 3x B1G COY, Butler HC)

Would Coach Matta be in line for a raise if Ohio State goes well over what Jim Tressel was making ($3.7 million per season to close to $5 million or so for the new coach)?

I think Matta's the No. 5 paid coach in college basketball right now and Calipari makes $4 million per season as the No. 1 highest paid, but would a bump be in order or requested? Tom Izzo is the No. 1 highest-paid in the Big Ten.

I'm just thinking of what Matta has done to the program since he's arrived in Columbus.

Maybe not a personal raise for Matta but more for assistants and/or facilities or Program spending?

This, all the way. He has put great talent in Scarlet and Grey. We just need a NC on the wall and he will be promoted to the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Read this in the morning and couldn't tell if the writer just wants attention (clicks) or is trying to make a valid point. I've never really cared for Arace as a columnist.

Some of Ohio State?s sharpest and sanest sports fans focus on men?s basketball and, among them, there is a murmuring about Chris Jent being a potential heir to coach Thad Matta.

The thinking goes like this: Matta?s history of back problems might compel him to step away from the bench before he wants to and, if he is thinking about a successor, Jent fits.
I don't really want to think about replacing Thad Matta at the moment. He's 44 and I hope he is Buckeye coach for a long time.

I would rather OSU be lead by Thad Matta's disembodied head than anyone else. Anyone. Wheel him out in a wheel chair or on a gurney if they have to. Just do whatever needs to be done to keep him here until he's 64.

Wish you would have put this in Chris Jent's thread because it really is about him and would have been much easier to find. The story is really about him and not Thad. I also do not think that the writer was looking for any attention because it is a known fact that Matta's back is not in very good shape and, in fact, has had a couple surgeries on it already and that is not good for a man who is only 44 years of age.

If you look way back in this thread you will see that there was some early discussion about the possibility that Matta might have to retire at an early age because of his back. What better person to replace him other than an alumnus who has coached and played at the highest level of basketball.

I just don't think that the writer was grasping for attention because I think it is very likely we will lose Matta before he is ready to go and who better to replace them Chris Jent.

I got lot of ideas, and all of them start with "Jamie Dixo" ...

Rarely is it a good idea to replace the head coach of a top-10 program with an assistant, and the Buckeye basketball job is no different. Jent will likely be at terrific head coach someday, but having the OSU job be his first would be an awful idea.

Over in the Romper Room I am getting ready to start a thread about all women growing peckers out of their vaginas.

Thought it would be less depressing than reading about what happens when Matta leaves.

Before anyone anoints Chris Jent as the second coming of Thad Matta, I'd like to see him work on the current Buckeyes' shooting percentage a bit.

Seriously, he's a great hire and is going to be a fantastic college coach, IMO. Matta's assistants tend to move on to pretty good jobs and do well there. As an example, Groce's had OU winning and recruiting as well as they ever have. Years from now, when Thad's ready to hang it up and take his place among the all-time great college coaches (after, say, 900 wins or so), there should be plenty of branches in his coaching tree from which to choose.

In the meantime, I like Jent's attitude. 51 years is way too long to wait between NCs. We're due. :oh:
