Texas Longhorns (big hat, no cattle; please don’t Horns Down us)

Texas AD wants to take football south of the border

Texas athletics director Steve Patterson has grand plans for the future of Texas Longhorn football. Aside from winning championships, Patterson wants to grow and expand the Texas football program beyond the borders of not only Texas, but also the country.

According to Austin American Statesman, Patterson has interest in Texas football playing a game in Mexico City.

Putting together a game in Mexico City would likely require moving a Texas road game to a neutral site in Mexico City, which means getting an opponent to agree to such a move.

Move the A&M game there... oh wait, that's right, the longhorns stopped scheduling their biggest rival in a fit of pique. Probably saved themselves two straight losses. The Notre Dame of the South, if we can't have it OUR way, we'll just take the ball and go home.

A&M to Texas is like Ped State to us. A&M saw it as a rivalry, but Texas didn't really care all that much beyond winning the game.

Oklahoma is by far a more accurate team for the term rival.

Yeah, except I think that A&M is more important to Texas than Penn State is to the Buckeyes. Series dates back to 1893 and was played on Thanksgiving Day to end the season since the 1910s. Finally there's this from Wikipedia - I know - could have been written by an Aggie.

"Aspects of the rivalry include: Each school mentions the other in its fight song ("and it's goodbye to A&M" in Texas Fight, and the entire second verse of the Aggie War Hymn is about Texas). The football series was the third longest running rivalry in college football. Since 1900, the last regular season football game was usually reserved for the matchup. Each school has elaborate pre-game preparations for the annual football clash, including the Aggie Bonfire and Hex Rally. Texas has a unique lighting scheme for the UT Tower after beating Texas A&M."

Oklahoma is always playing in Texas, at the state fair, and the game is played relatively early in each team's schedule. It's been more important in terms of national ranking, possibly recruiting, but it's not something that separates families and neighborhoods inside Texas. It would be interesting to hear from some Texas fans - other than X-Ray Randy - before I'd fully concede the point

Six Texas draft hopefuls were skipped over in the NFL draft, including Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year Jackson Jeffcoat.

The Texas Longhorns made NFL draft history this week.

And not in a good way.

For the first time since 1937, the Longhorns failed to have a player selected in the NFL draft. Texas was one of just four schools from college football's five power conferences (Big 12, SEC, ACC, Big Ten, Pac-12) to suffer the ignominious feat. Illinois, Northwestern, and fellow Big 12 member Kansas were the others.

The Texas shutout, however, was one of the big surprises of the draft.

The Longhorns entered the weekend with six draft hopefuls, including All-American and Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year Jackson Jeffcoat, who also won the Ted Hendricks Award as the nation's top defensive end. All 32 NFL teams attended Texas' pro day March 26 to scout Jeffcoat and other Texas prospects.

The historically poor draft showing underscored the Longhorns' slide in recent years under coach Mack Brown.

Yea. I've never been on the Shag when they're winning, but I have to admit it's probably pretty insufferable. They're arrogant enough while they're losing. I guess it's a combination of that whole state's sick, overcompensating bravado combined with the smugness of having two rivals (cheatingest program in ncaa football history and a complete fucking freakshow of a university) who can't help but make them look good in comparison.

I like and respect the University of Texas. I also enjoy them losing.
