Texas Longhorns (big hat, no cattle; please don’t Horns Down us)

Regardless of talent, Ewers has really bad body language out there on the field and on the sideline. Not a leader, and does not make those around him better.

There is no doubt that he gave every appearance of wilting under the pressure. While there is no way of knowing for certain, it sure seems like that's the reason the offense choked.

Teams with lower Differential Scoring Defense than TCU (better defenses in other words) that Texas has played:
  • Alabama
  • Iowa State
  • Kansas State
Texas scored more points against all of them.

The difference?

Truthfully... there's no way of being sure. Girl trouble? School trouble? Stayed up all night bingeing something on Netflix? All possible. But are they as likely as the visible difference?

From where we sit, the only visible difference is the pressure. TCU was highly ranked (like Bama), but against Bama Texas was not favored.

It may not be the case... but until we have more data points the most likely conclusion is that Ewers, and by extension Texas, cracked under pressure.

Are we just assuming Arch Manning sticks to a commitment to this dumpster fire?

His signing with Texas is a branding thing. Ole Miss doesn’t have the name brand of Tejas, and Tennessee already has Nico committed, so he’s not going to the alma mater of his family. I doubt he goes to OU, or Bama either(Bama has a 5star QB committed, and OU looks suspect under Veneables), and there aren’t many other high profile football programs in the south that the Mannings want their name associated with.

The Mannings like being in control of their branding, reminds me of when Eli didn’t want to go to San Diego(the FO was a mess, but the market also wasn’t what he walked in to) and instead forced his way to NYC.

Either way, Texas has not been relevant in going on 13 years. It's been one failure after another. Why a top-ranked recruit, with any other reasonable options would go there is beyond me.

Ewers, I can kinda understand as he's from Texas. I get "going home" on some level. But seeing him, the #1 overall recruit in his class, flopping HARD should ring alarm bells. That place is toxic on the field, culturally, and has one of the WORST fanbases in all of sports.

Since I mentioned DSA... My new spreadsheets update much faster than the old ones did, so they're already done, and they give a unique perspective on the size of the Texas implosion.

EDIT: Data below has been corrected. The import from the defensive spreadsheet to the offensive had not completed when I entered the information originally.

Including last night's game, Texas has a DSO of 1.237 on the season, meaning they score 23.7% more points than their opponents give up, on average, in their other FBS games (vs everyone not named Texas).

Texas' worst single-game DSO before last night was against Alabama (1.006).

Their DSO against TCU was 0.356. That is 0.882 points below their season-DSO of 1.237

There are only 11 teams in FBS that have had a bigger under-performance on offense this year.

The single biggest under-performance of the year relative to Season-DSO was Ohio State in the Northwestern Nor'easter. The 0.730 DSO for that game was 1.267 points below their season DSO which went DOWN this week to 1.997
