Texas Longhorns (big hat, no cattle; please don’t Horns Down us)

Texas' Steve Sarkisian sorry for missing 'The Eyes of Texas'

Texas coach Steve Sarkisian opened his Monday news conference following the Longhorns' 41-34 loss to Oklahoma State by apologizing for not singing "The Eyes of Texas," the school song, before leaving the field.

"As you know, I owe an apology to Longhorn Nation," Sarkisian said. "I made a mistake at the end of the game in not singing 'The Eyes of Texas' when the game was done. That was not anything intentional. That was not anything that had to do with our players. I think our players just followed me up the ramp into the locker room, obviously upset by the way the game ended."

The song has been the subject of a controversy over the past few years as the school has reckoned with its origins likely tied to a minstrel show sung by performers in blackface. Former head coach Tom Herman was criticized for letting players choose whether they wanted to sing it.

At Sarkisian's introductory news conference in January 2021, he made a strong statement that it will not be a question going forward.

"I know this much, 'The Eyes of Texas' is our school song," he said. "We're going to sing that song. We're going to sing that proudly."

Last week, Texas was favored over a team that was ranked higher than them.

DSA predicted a victory by a touchdown; that's what happened

This week, Texas again is favored over a team that is ranked higher than them.

DSA again predicts a victory by a touchdown.

But rather than just go with the DSA prediction, a closer look at the last few weeks give me pause

Not so long ago, Texas lost to Oklahoma State. The Horns were called for 14 penalties in that game. The Cowboys were called for zero.

The next week Oklahoma State, the same team that beat the Horns, lost to KSU 48-0

Then Texas played KSU last week. The team that beat the Cowboys 48-0. The Cowboys that had beaten the Horns.

DSA predicted a victory because DSA doesn't care about transitive victories. DSA was right.

Texas beat KSU who had trounced OkSU who had beaten Texas... and around we go...

So the question isn't how to sort out the circular transitive labyrinth or to just trust DSA. The question is, will the officials who called 14 penalties on the Horns and zero on the Cowboys allow the team that's leaving the conference to torpedo the conference's only hope at a CFP bid?

Sarkesian seems to think that his team was at fault for all of those penalties, so... OK... maybe 14-0 in penalties just happened.

Some will tune in to the game to see the team in purple compete for a CFP bid
Some will tune in to see if the team in burnt orange is back
I'll be tuning in to watch the team in black&white. I want to see if 14-0 was a coincidence.
