Wow is right. This open sure has been full of surprises. After watching Sharapova get dismantled, I don't think it would surprise me at all if Gonzalez takes out Federer tomorrow, too.

Congratulations to Serena. It's nice to see her at the top again.

I don't know..Federer looks unbeatable on the hardcourt so far...That match against Andy was a clinic.
I know. I'm just saying I don't think much will surprise me anymore about this one... I don't know if it's just because it's the first big tournament of the season, but it seems the Australian Open always has people coming out of the woodwork and is the least predictable. I love that.

And speaking of clinic, did you see Gonzo's match against Haas? Doesn't mean he can pull that off against the maestro, of course, but he's definitely at the top of his game. Whatever the result, I think tomorrow's match will be a great one.

Being a big fan of Sharapova's, I was disappointed in her crushing loss tonight. Serena was in the zone to put it mildly, Maria was clearly not. Her more recently tough first service went walkabout, and Serena jumped all over the ones that did get in.

Having said that, Maria at 19 and the #1 player in the rankings has been there before, and is tough as nails most of the time. I watched Davenport skunk her 6-0; 6-0 in some tournament a couple years ago, but she didn't go into a blue funk about it...she just practiced harder and upped her game. She will win many Slam tournaments in her career I think, especially with Davenport, Clisters, etc. retiring. Henne-Hardenne is still a player who tends to whip Maria, and others, the majority of the time.

Obviously, if Serena maintains tonight's form, she is going to be back in the top 5 or 10, and if she continues playing like she did tonight she will terrorize everyone.
Maria continues to be the most interesting of the women players, not only because of her supermodel good looks (richest female athlete in the world at 19 ain't too bad of a start) but because she is still single minded in her quest to be the best. She still has a ways to go, as tonight taught.

Go Bucks!

WARNING!!!!!!!!!!!
LOL
Do not be suprised if Fernando Gonzales plays Roger Federer closer than most expect. I say this for a couple reasons.
1) Fernando Gonzales is an extremely talented player, and a better shot maker. If he can put it together,(not go for winners on every ball), and he can easily be a top 5 player. He is working with a new coach and has looked great throughout the open. He has very impressive wins against Hewitt, Blake, Nadal, and Haas. Most importantly none of these matches 5 sets. He should be well rested for this match.
2.) Although Federer has won this event twice, it is nowhere near his favorite surface. The ball does not sit up like he would like it to. He has struggled here, regardless of his wins. He has stated publicly he has a tough time getting into his groove here.

My money is still on Federer, but don't think of this as already won just because he beat Roddick. (Who had a relatively easy draw BTW)

Swiss precision strikes again...

I'm still pretty impressed with Gonzo, though. I thought he played well tonight, especially in the first set. He should have won the first set, really, but I think nerves got to him a bit... I bet he wishes he had that set-point forehand back. This tournament clearly wasn't a fluke for him, though. Props to him for really picking up his game. I look forward to watching more from him this season - this should be a huge confidence booster for him.

I greatly enjoyed this whole Open, but it will be nice to get back to sleeping at night again...

Looking back through the thread, that was 6/8 correct picks this year. Maybe I have a future in the high stakes world of tennis betting.

Anyone for slightly late Aussie Open predictions? (Hint: Don't pick Ljubicic)

Men: Roddick
Women: Sharapova
Don't quit your day job... :p You'd better be perfect for the rest of the year...

We can officially quit playing Men's Tennis now. No one is gonna beat Federer. He's too damn good. Maybe we should just allow tournaments on clay, that's the only time anyone else has a shot. Hell, he just might beat Gonzales and Roddick at the same time.....

the tennis thread

I realize that tennis has lost a little of it's shine since the late 70's early 80's, but it is a great game to play.

I have found, as I get older, it does not subject the body to wear and tear as much as a good game of pickup basketball (although I still like to play b-ball). I started playing tennis when I was young and I still love to play.
